NY chicken lover!!!!

Jaw good luck with the dog. I would get them fixed and leave the dew claws. Both my dogs have theirs and have never had a problem. They get their nails trimmed every couple months.
My female is food motivated. She will & has eaten anything left out when someone is not nearby. Including chicken food. Lol. She would eat all day if she could. I feed my 2 dogs together and ere has never been any growling. Lily finishes first of course while it takes bear 10 minutes to eat the same amount. But thankfully lily waits till he is finished before licking his bowl clean.

Perhaps you could trying crating the dog when its not supervised. Might take a week or so for the dog to get used to it but my lily goes in her crate without being asked now, I also use gates to keep the dogs out of rooms I don't want them in

You're right, Cass. My response to Jlaw may have been insensitive. I have had bad experiences bringing dogs into the home without enough gradual integration. Hope a heads up could prevent a problem in his home. I guess I stand by the message, but perhaps wish I would have been softer in delivery.

I do not think anyone is trying to tell you that you are not a good mom. People around here think with their fingers. And then the "problem" takes on a life of it's own and gets totally off the intent of the original poster's vent/rant/question. If you read the replies to ANYONE'S question or problem the discussion some how winds up how we wouldn't "do that" or "allow that" cuz yadda yadda yadda. Chicken problem, family problem, dog problem. We are just a chatty bunch who think with our fingers and no one is trying to say that you or your daughter did anything wrong. Please don't think that they are....and if it turns out they are? Tell me who. I'll go get them for you.

We are all here to support each other as we raise THINGS. (this thread doesn't seem to be limited to chickens....we are all raising things of all kinds)

(Please take a second to read and digest the replies to Jlaw's dog problem and you will see what I mean. Keep posting whatever you need feedback on and we'll make sure you get your fill. LOL)
x2 - You have to remember ChickPrincess, when you bring a new topic to the table for discussion, you're bound to get answers you don't want to hear. But would
you not risk it and then in return NOT get any answers at all? I wouldn't. Like Cass said, read and digest and ignore what you don't want to hear. I know some will make you mad, but this is a board of many many people and many many people can have many many different opinions. Wouldn't be interesting if we didn't.

I couldn't really give you any advice on the subject cuz I am no where close to having those problems with my kids yet! Lord help me! LOL
you are not alone. I've been wearing mine most of the day.

Phew! Thought I was the only one.

Ok, I am ready, no more than ready, for this rain to STOP ALREADY. My soil has a LOT of clay in it so my yard is a swimming pool right now. Last time I fell and got a HUGE bruise on my leg. It is just nicely healed up and last night I put on my boots, as to not repeat the mistake causing my first fall of sneakers in this rain, and went down to "do the chickens". I FELL AGAIN. This time I hit the front of my leg full on (instead of a glancing blow like last time). It swelled as big as a baseball. It hurt so much I went to the ER/ED to see if I had chipped the bone. (I knew it wasn't broken because I could walk on it, drive even, cuz that' s how I got to the hospital) It is so swollen that it is making my toes tingle when my leg is down. Was I smart enough to hold off going to ER until after I went to work today so I could get worker's comp? No. I played it straight and went when my toes started to be involved in a leg injury.

3 ducks hatched. The last one was a late quitter....cracked the egg and it was fully formed but yolk sac wasn't absorbed. Poor baby. The momma was eating out of my hand to show them how to do it. Man, she has an evil pinch when she grabs food out of my hand. I quickly remembered why I don't hand feed my chickens.

I do think that the ducks will fit in very nicely with my flock. The chickens haven't even slowed down their foraging due to rain. They go in the coop each night looking like drown rats. The 3 medium size chicks were playing chase through the largest puddle they could find. I am hoping the extra water causes them to grow faster. Their momma is showing signs of wanting her freedom sooner than her sister did. I fear for these 3, cuz they just aren't growing as fast as I think they should. Maybe I should throw some chick feed into the woods where she takes them every morning so they get more nutrition than bugs contain. They are only a week younger than the first hatch and they have almost no feathers. The first hatch is fully feathered and roosting up high with momma already.

Remind me again why I am raising chickens? Is it for the eggs? I haven't had over 18 hens lay more than 3 eggs any day this week. I am not amused. I am going to worm them this weekend. If they aren't laying anyway, why not worm them, right? No worry about "egg withdrawal" that way.

I slid quite a bit this morning rearranging the duck pen. They've made a muddy mess of their area in their pen and I wanted to move it to the grass. Well that was a mistake to do in the rain! So I am with you, sooooo over this rain! Congrats on your ducks hatching though! Enjoy them while they're small

See now I don't follow only a few threads, this being one. I don't follow the family story ones cuz sure as shootin I'll get myself in trouble. I should have just let that one pass but forgot my policy to not get into them. Lord knows there are a million opinions on how to raise the perfect child but history proves no one has the answer.

I am sorry and meant no offense, it just happens sometimes.

Moving on, I can not believe this rain. My feet are wet and will be til I go to bed. My boots got wet inside and won't dry out till we got some hot weather. I swear I can hear my chickens quacking.

This can't be good for the strawberry crop.
