NY chicken lover!!!!

Evening all. Yard is still soggy and I am hoping for sun and dry weather to dry everything out.

Mountaindog--my dh just came home from his sportsmens club meeting with the same report of bears breaking into local chicken coops around here. One actually ran across the top of the berm behind the shooting range and kept stopping to look at him and the others who were there. There are at least 3 running around here. Hopefully, they will pass us by but we shall see. Might have to put out a radio. We are fortunate to have a former dec officer and bear expert who lives near to us and is a member of the club so he keeps tabs on the bears in the area and what they are up to.

Cass---get better soon!

Stony---great pics of momma and the baby and the nice little buck. Hopefully you will catch one of the moose as well. They do show up here every once in a while.

Thanks for all the support about my daughter. She is going through the hard part now. I am hopeful that the changes she is making will help. She is a strong person who will overcome this. Like the song says, Life is about changing, nothing ever stays the same.

Candling the eggs under Eowyn tomorrow to see how they are doing. She is being a good broody mommy and sitting tight. I now have two broody silkies in the other coop. Really? Rancher....stop the broody madness!!!! lol

So close to having my run finished! I ran out of zip ties!

I got home from work and let the chickens out, I really can't wait to have this run 100% complete so I can leave the door open and they can come and go as they please into the run.

Stonykill, what a neat thing to see a moose on your property, I had no idea they could be found that often over where you are (Columbia County, right?). I guess they are moving down from Vermont. I'd love to see some here in the Catskills. We had one here once about 10 years ago but that was an anomaly.

A friend at work today told me his chicken coop had been torn apart by a blackbear last night, he lives in Stone Ridge (Ulster County) about 20 miles south of where I live. (We have a LOT of bears here in Phoenicia too). Fortunately his 5 hens were fine, the bear was after the feeder. He now has to figure out the best way to rebuild his run and part of the house, and he said he is no longer going to leave the feeder in the coop at night, it has to go in his house or garage every evening from now on until the bears hibernate in December. He is also considering electric poultry netting, I'll have to read up on that.

Anyone have this issue? It is something I'm worried about as I'm doing final plans for finishing my coop and run this year. I have bears come through my yard and front porch all the time, but they stay away from my fenced-in backyard where my dog's smell must deter them. My coop is within the fenced yard. I guess I'll need to use a feeder that will be easy to bring in the garage each night.

Pharm, hope your daughter feels better soon, sorry for her heartbreak.
Cass, hope your leg feels better.

Thank heavens the rain has finally stopped, at least for a day or two...

I found this on Pinterest a while back. Supposedly it is bear proof. At the very least it looks pretty cool

. We had a black bear wandering around last summer just east of Rochester. It was spotted about 2 miles from my house but thankfully wasn't a problem.

Morning all. Slogged through the puddled grass to let the beasties out this morning. So much water everywhere. Dh was up half the night manning the pump. I sure do hope we get that sun promised for this afternoon. Found eggs in the silkie runs this morning. Silly girls laid them there instead of inside. My two tater tot girls were roosting with the big girls when I opened the door to let them out. The little boys were on the lower roost. So glad they are getting along now.

My oldest dd moved back in temporarily. Out of the blue her fiance called off the wedding and needs some alone time. She is in pieces. Deposits had been made, etc and so now all that is gone. He is going to have lots of alone time as she has decided to move south to live with her sister in ga and find a job that she can advance in as the one she has now is going nowhere. Its hard to see your children suffer so. Better now though then after a wedding.

Cass--glad your leg is getting better. Be careful out there.

Off to a long shift today. Hoping for a quiet day.
So sorry for your daughter but he is the one losing out.
Morning everyone,
Rain has finally stopped here. Not sure when it'll pick it up again but I think I should take advantage and clean out the coops or at least add more shavings to them since I'm off today.

Last day of school today for my son! We're taking him out to lunch this afternoon since we'll all be home. Although my daughter has had stomach issues for a few days now and I'm not sure what's wrong. Think I'll be taking a trip to an urgent care place because I haven't been happy with the kids' pedi here. Really don't want her being her there and get annoyed with whatever they tell me. Maybe the urgent care place can recommend a better pedi for me.

Separated Duncan last night from the girls. He's in the brooder/grow out pen for now.

Pharm - so sorry to hear about your daughter. That is just awful. But may be for the better?? Hope everything works out regardless of what they decide.
I hope your daughter is feeling better. My boys have been out of school since the 10th and oldest boy that is still home graduates the 22nd.
Went out today and got ONE egg. I collect in the morning so that one egg was from a full 24 hour period. Poor things either hate the wet or are stressing about the recent dog attacks. So I'm going to take advantage of it and worm them with Eprinex, since some have been looking a little thin and I'm getting suspicious it's worms. I know there's not supposed to be an egg withdrawal, but might as well do it while they're not laying anyway, right?

Miss broody hen, Penny, kicked an egg out of the nest box when she came out for food and broke it. Poor little thing, you could see the embryo. I felt bad for it. So she's down to 13 eggs now and I've rearranged the nest a little to try to avoid a repeat.

I also changed the duck's pool so they're all happy. They still have a hard time getting in though so I'm going to have to fashion stairs of some kind to give them a boost. Lacie goose has no problem, she just throws herself right over the side and in.

Glasshen, it's funny you mention saddles, I just finished forcing a very unamused EE hen into a butterfly saddle since she got grabbed during the dog attack and the roo was preventing feather regrowth. She's now happily bopping around in it. Making it was quite an adventure, I can tell you that!

Pharm, sorry to hear about your daughter. It's an awful situation

I did all my bigger chickens tonight with the Eprinex too. and tomorrow will clean the coop and dust them for mites.

mama and her lil ones
So adorable
My two little red hens are the center of attention of the two GLW roos. The other hens are taken care of, but these red hens are hussies. Noticed last night that the one is starting to bleed. Plan is to put a roo in each Eglu, move the kids from the Eglu into the coop. Hopefully tonight. Then I only need to worry about the EE roo getting after them. While I'm at it, may as well take the bully GLW roo for a little walk to the neighbor's house for dinner. I have a Golden Blue Maran, Delaware, and two Blue/Cuckoo Maran roo-lets from Tab with 8 pullets; too many boys in the hen house. Hope Luna hatches lots of little girls! We did toss the one definite clear egg last night. Not sure what is going on in the EE egg, looks like a large, dark mass inside. That one was set a day later than the others. Anyone recommend a good site/link for comparing egg development? Everything I searched for is drawing and illustration or poor quality "How to Candle" youtube videos. I know how to do it, just don't know what Im looking for.
Here is a link to a page from here the pictures are pretty good https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation
every once in a while one is spotted here. I have seen the tracks before but never the actual moose before
I have seen one here actually in my yard it is quite common up here we have a small phone company and the cover a few years ago was a picture of a moose that was taken by my next door neighbor in her fields.
Im from rochester Ny. This is my First time posting. I have two hens jeresy gaint and austrolop and a roo that I think is a brahma
Welcome you have come to a great place.
I'm beginning to think my ducks are terrified of me and only me. Every time I walk over to their pen, they go nuts and hop into their coop. My husband is out there mowing on the John Deer, right up next to their pen and they don't even flinch! What's up with that!?!?

And did I mention its driving me crazy I can't look at these eggs now they're in "lockdown"?? I'm going nuts over here. I hope something happens with them tomorrow. I'm getting anxious. Tomorrow will be day 21 and I know they can go a little longer but still. Wish I knew if there was at least movement still going on inside of them.
I am going to go insane during lockdown the whole not knowing issue and not touching issue.
Because the nipples are red they peck at them and learn that there is water there. They will go for the other type waterers if available but will use the nipple ones if there is no choice. I show them how to use them as chicks by holding them and pushing on the nipple a few time. Chickens are only dumb about some things. Not this.

Thanks I think I am going to get some and try them out.

So my roo started a dance with my teens today ( they are 3 months ) ..I stopped him as they are immature .
My son thinks he is just showing them he is dominant ...and it is okay .
I am afraid he is trying to mate with them . Any thoughts ?

Lucky the Rock Critic ...Decided the music was okay today ....no roooos but then they didnt play jungle Love Either

Good Morning! Welcome to the new folks!

Pharm-- Sorry about your daughter. I recommend giving her a cast iron frying pan. They're nice to cook with and have good heft when hitting things or just thinking about hitting things. I gave one to my friend this past Christmas who had related troubles. It made her smile.

Morning all. Looks to be a beautiful day and the cheeps were already pounding on the doors when I went out to let them out this morning. Gave them some bananas and strawberry parts. I thought the terrorists were going to kill themselves trying to get out the big window while watching me put out the goods! I opened the pop door and it was a free for all. The tater tots are all roosting with the big girls now. They tolerate them as long as the youngsters remember that the girls get to eat first and get dibs on prime roosting spots inside and out of the coop. These heritage rir are almost as big as the girls at almost three months of age. I am wondering how much bigger they are going to get. No attempted crows from the boys yet. Probably a good thing.

Tab--I already have a few cast iron pans. I also gave some serious consideration as to their usage but decided to leave it be. It wont make dd pain any less. It will just take time. Its a good thing that she is moving away. New place, new job and her sister will help.

Off to the pharm today.

Someone else has watched Tangled a few too many times! LOL
Got home late from my parents, so did not get the chicken switch completed. Wonder if I can grab the boys this morning and get the kids switched, all by myself...

Eggs finally! Of course it's from my silkies coop, and since I put my smaller set of babies in with them they hid their eggs lol.. Why won't my barred rock start laying again. My frustration with this past weather has made me crazy. My older set of babies should be laying soon!
