NY chicken lover!!!!

This is the splash hen I got from Marquisella. She decided to go broody right next to the front door of the coop! So now everything I do with that coop-cleaning, feeding, has to go thru the nest box door!

Well loaded my bator up. Who knows whats going to hatch. I got 12 eggs from lady at work don't know what she has. And I got 23(had 24 but wife wanted to eat it) from a farm down the road. Bought a flash light to candle them at home depot today a nice defiant one highest lumes I could find besides maybe flood light style. Has 590 lumens so hope that's enough. Tried on a light brown egg and it looked like I could see slightly shaded spot for a yolk but not 100% sure. I need to get another thermo and hygrometer though the two i'm using are two different readings. Then again one is on same lvl as eggs other is in top of the incubator from factory. using the genesis 1588 bator and I got a zilla digital thermo/hygrometer. And I need to learn how to calibrate them.

Lynzi cute bunnies, I might get some next year someone in my area says adding their waste to compost is super wonderful! That's funny she went broody right there silly girl. But understandable my silkies are laying elsewhere because of the tots.

Yes it is! When I was younger and working with rabbits a friend of the family used to come over and fill bags of their waste for his gardens. Said it made great fertilizer. I don't have a garden so I have to use it for that purpose.

Well all this talk about using grass shavings in the runs of coops got me to try it since my DH just mowed yesterday. Raked out all the mulch, will never use that again! Just gross! After more and more rain and the chickens stepping all over it, packing it down, it was almost impossible to clean up. And man ohan did it reek!!! So now there's grass in there and the next clean up should be a lot easier to take up. I need another shower now, feel like that smell is sticking to me now. Ugh

Only if it continues to be a problem .
My hens will eat a broken cracked egg ...so if there is a fight in the nesting box ...their will probably be a broken / missing egg .
Otherwise no one usually eats them ..

That's what I'm hoping. I'm sure Blackie put up a good fight, so it very well could be that they were accidentally broken.

I'm going to put Blondie in the brooder in the garage tonight with fake eggs and see if she stays broody. If so, I will give her eggs tomorrow.

The gate to the run fell over this morning (a hen flew up and knocked it over... it's just a plastic fence hooked on a nail) and all the chickens got out. They've been free ranging all day. So worried the fox will come around.

106 Posts, and I'll never catch up. Pharm, I'm sorry for your dd, but don't let the door kick him in the a** on the way out! Can't tell me he had no idea before wedding plans were started.

My poor Blackie (australorp broody). I made her an area all to herself and thought no one else could get in. Got home from work yesterday and she was out of her area and 2 other australorps were IN her area. I had only given her 4 eggs to start. One went missing a couple weeks ago so she's been on 3 most of the time. Yesterday, 2 more were gone and a small partial egg/chick was left behind. One hen that I had just taken out was now in another regular nest and I caught her eating a fresh egg. I grabbed her and then realized she's also broody (bare chest). I tagged her with an orange ziptie. I'm assuming I have to get rid of her, right?
I sealed off Blackie's area better, so I don't think anyone can get in. Poor girl only has one egg left and I'm hoping it's a good egg. I tried to candle it while she was off it but it was too light in the coop and I couldn't see anything.

AND Blondie (BO) is broody again. She has stuck like glue to her nest, so I may make a whole other secure area for her and future broodies. More of a permanent broody area.

What's that yellow thing up in the sky??? Enjoy it while it's here.
I HAD an egg eater. At first I thought the eggs was broken because of squabbling over a favorite nest box. Then I came home one day from work to find the culprit eating an egg in the nest box. Hmmmmmm. I segregated her in a dog crate & watched..................... and what did I observe ?? She squatted, layed the egg, then promptly turned around and ate it ! Ugghhhhh ! Needless to say she will NOT be teaching that bad habit to any of my other girls.

Lmao. The things ya'll have to do around broodies.

Lord have mercy the two ee's I have try to pull the eggs away from me as I'm gathering them. Even the one in the coop is nasty. It must be the breed.

two more del chicks hatched by Buckwheat and one ? by the Del thank the Lord. She's the one that started it all. Took all unhatched eggs from Buckwheat so she'll get out with the other two. No one seems to mind the new Del chicks and they're learning just fine. Mother Del seems to have them with her.

I like to keep the wooden eggs so that perhaps they learn eggs are hard and not good to eat. Still I lose the occasional egg. Not often though. I always worry when I don't find any eggs that they're might be an eater and I'll have to wring it's neck.

I don't mind saying a plastic fenced hooked on a nail will not stop a determined fox. Of course neither will my poultry wire run but it might slow it down. I lock everyone in at night.

I don't use grass cutting inside the run. I dump them in the yard and let the chickens glean them for whatever they can find. Most likely snail and slugs.

Though with this rain not much can stop the stinkies. Just dump more shavings or straw to try to keep things as dry as possible.

So today was the day I planned on moving Stella to the broody box. cleaned out all coops, let Duncan out, cleaned out the pen to get it ready for Stella, moved her tonight and she's going bonkers in there! Peeping out the little screen just looking for a way out.

She already flew the coop once today for about an hour and while she did I candled her eggs one last time seeing as how they are due to hatch on Tuesday. So now she's not sitting on them again for a second time today. I really hope she settles down soon and when she does, she lays on them. I'll be so upset because I still have these two in the bator that are showing no signs whatsoever to hatching. I figured if they don't, I still have Stella's eggs.

Also let the ducks out today but since I moved their coops the other day they didn't go into the woods and spend their day in there. I'm waiting to see what happens at dusk. (which is about now LOL) if they will sit their butts down out in the yard or move into the coop.
