NY chicken lover!!!!

I found this on Pinterest a while back. Supposedly it is bear proof. At the very least it looks pretty cool  . We had a black bear wandering around last summer just east of Rochester. It was spotted about 2 miles from my house but thankfully wasn't a problem.

edited to add the link. lol. I must have been tired!

now that is the only hoop coop I would EVER use. That is FANTASTIC!

I love the frame but I don't like the chicken wire inside as the only wire deterrent, I would rather use hardware cloth.
I know I don't on my current hoop coop but its surrounded by electric netting and I don't have bears or weasels here either.

I HAD an egg eater. At first I thought the eggs was broken because of squabbling over a favorite nest box. Then I came home one day from work to find the culprit eating an egg in the nest box. Hmmmmmm. I segregated her in a dog crate & watched..................... and what did I observe ?? She squatted, layed the egg, then promptly turned around and ate it ! Ugghhhhh ! Needless to say she will NOT be teaching that bad habit to any of my other girls.

I never thought of doing that. Great idea!

Well I think Stella finally settled down. Lets hope she stays that way the next couple of days and hatches some chicks! She's the only one with an egg Fromm black hen. So that chick will be black or blue. The others I'm unsure as to what color they will be because they are lavender split blue x splash parents. Hoping something happens with these eggs in the bator tomorrow. It'll be day 22!

I don't mind saying a plastic fenced hooked on a nail will not stop a determined fox. Of course neither will my poultry wire run but it might slow it down. I lock everyone in at night.
No, I don't expect it to stop a fox, but I hate them roaming in the woods when I know fox are out there. Mine are all securely locked up at night in the coop. The plastic fence is on the run.

So today was the day I planned on moving Stella to the broody box. cleaned out all coops, let Duncan out, cleaned out the pen to get it ready for Stella, moved her tonight and she's going bonkers in there! Peeping out the little screen just looking for a way out.

She already flew the coop once today for about an hour and while she did I candled her eggs one last time seeing as how they are due to hatch on Tuesday. So now she's not sitting on them again for a second time today. I really hope she settles down soon and when she does, she lays on them. I'll be so upset because I still have these two in the bator that are showing no signs whatsoever to hatching. I figured if they don't, I still have Stella's eggs.
I don't plan on moving Luna till her eggs hatch. When she started going broody last fall, I moved her to the Eglu. Broke the broodiness, she paced the entire time trying to get out. This time I only moved her out of the laying box and into a muck bucket. She is behind the box where it is dark and no one bothers her. Pulled the GLW boys out of the coop this morning and into the Eglus, the kids out of the Eglu and into the stall with the coop. Amish kids took the naughty roo for dinner, the good roo is pacing in the Eglu pen all day. Managed to catch all the kids and put them in the coop for bed. They were wandering around peeping and making me feel guilty to leave the coop open, so in they went. Only have 4 hens and the broody in the coop with them. Next up is to wash out one of the Eglus for next weekend's chick hatching, hopefully! And let the surviving GLW roo out before he worries himself to death.

Just an FYI, if anyone is interested in a baby bunny, (they will be ready end of July/beginning of August) 3 of them will be available. They are holland lops. :)

Is it possible for eggs to not have air cells? I try candleing some just to see if I can see them but I don't see any shadeing difference except where I think the yoke maybe. My humidity was way high like 65's or so cause I thought the one was off but it's the one that was correct. Now I have 4 hygrometers in there and 4 thermometers. I had wife take all water out while I was at work to lower it and it droped to about 38-42 when I got home. I added some water like 4tsp repluged the vent hole and it's back up to 60%. Just took the top vent off to see where it settles at.

The air cells bug me cause i'm not sure if my light is too bright or not bright enough these are lighter brown eggs i'm using a flashlight with 590 lumes and a full toilet paper roll on top of it. paper is duct taped so no extra light comes out between the sheets. It has a high and lower setting I've tried both but don't see any difference in egg. The most I see is some pin hole bright spots. Just incase you don't know lumes (I don't) a 40 wat light bulb ranges from like 390 to 450's. I just tried a lower rated bulb I don't know the lumes but it should be like a 25 watt bulb.

I already know i'm going to screw this up big time if I haven't already. At least its only 7 dollars spent on eggs. I just don't want any to start to develop and then stop cause I screwed up. Think i'll have to make a blog "how not to incubate chicken eggs". Start with don't buy eggs your not sure if they are fertile or not lol.
