NY chicken lover!!!!

No, I looked all over and examined them, I know it can happen when breeding silkies, just weird that it happened with such a small hatch. I have to some research but I'm almost positive if I use it for breeding I will get offspring with 4 toes, not 5.

I don't know why it took me so long to notice this (maybe all the excitement of family being up) but I was holding my blue Silkie chick this morning, took a closer look at its feet and saw it only has 4 toes. :-( so upset. So I shouldn't use it for breeding, right? It could pass that trait down to other chicks.
The third post down in this thread breaks it down for ya about silkies toes and breeding. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/497737/four-toes-on-a-silkie

Well 4 of 7 hatched not too bad first time I know I made a lot of mistakes. Mainly I had humidity too high at end. It could have been 6 of 7 I think if I kept it lower. I went to help one last night and the inside lining was hard to break I think if it was dryer it would have broke easier also the baby I helped had a lot of wetness inside and didn't absorb all the yolk. When it climbed out it had a puddle in the egg. I moved the last two chicks out of the bator so it could be by it's self but it was so wet coming out it dryed to the screen. Needless to say it didn't make it. The other two eggs one stared to zip broke a line along the shell but I think same problem couldn't break the membrane under the shell.

now for happy news and pics. Here are my mutt chickens 2 black/white with black/yellow legs from one farm, and 2 yellow chicks I think the lady only had reds from tsc so production reds off springs on those two. I desided i'm keeping my first hatch. Wife aint happy but she will get over it. sorry so many pics I cut it in half of what I had already taken : )

JLaw - I was JUST reading that post while you were posting! Lol funny....so yea in there it says a 5 toed Silkie x 4 toed Silkie would produce 100% 5 toed offspring. So I could use it for breeding, however the gene for those offspring would be split and cause them to throw a 4 toed Silkie from time to time. So I'm happy with that note and I will keep it and possibly use it. It's just the cutest one and I absolutely love it! So happy with this hatch as far as colors go!! Your chicks are super cute!!! Congrats on the ones that made it!

Lynzii - are silkies that hard to get around you? Seems like I see a lot of them at auctions. Not that I advocate anyone having them.

congrats on everyones hatches. None hatching here but should have some in the next couple of weeks.

I hope for you hay people things work out. Got 7 bales in a trade last week and hope to get 7 more soon. I need you folks to have a good harvest of hay even though I don't keep horses.

I've got what appears to be a Del rooster to give away if anyone wants him. Not good for breeding for Dels, but perhaps a cross with a RIR hen. The cross should produce good laying hens.

I have some Robins that I've seen near my garden and this AM they were going crazy. Well I didn't notice it going out but right there in the path was a baby, (glad I didn't step on it) so I picked it up and moved it into the garden. Didn't want the chickens to get it. I did see a Blue Jay up in the trees too so perhaps it had raided the nest. It was gone later this PM so I don't know what happened to it. I expect the Jay got it, but there was no sign of it being damaged. Blue Jays are nasty birds.

Take care everyone,

Rancher - I don't know too many people out this way that breed silkies. I had gotten a lavender split Roo a while back from Adora, and since then have decided to start my own lavender lines. It's a nice project for me to focus on with these silkies. That's why I obtained the lavender chicks from Geri in PA. These blues that got out of this hatch will be perfect for breeding into this project. That's why I'm bummed with the Silkie who has 4 toes. But it may work out.

Just checking in, I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th I worked and worked and worked today was my day off and I did massive amounts of yard work cleaning and homework, this class is killing me I won't have much of a summer with this one. Anywho I hope everyone is well. Sorry there were too many post to read but I hope all is well, gotta grocery shop and do more homework now that the sun is starting to set. Have a great one!

Well do try to get some rest. This rain has made it hard to do yard work around here. I'll need to replant some things to raise them up higher. The septic is giving us fits as it doesn't drain well with all this rain.

I don't recall what you're going to school for, but I'm sure you'll do well.

I was just curious. I live just down the road from a woman who used to show silkies. Last I knew she got out of chickens due to allergies I remember she had a friend Jeff who showed silkie also. I think he lived up near Pulaski or Mexico. You can certainly find him at the State Fair, though I don't advise buying anything there.

Last week I was complaining bout rain, now it's so cuss-ed hot.

Can anyone tell me why there are blood spots in my eggs? Only 2 and they seem to be constant. Not large spots but sometimes there are a lot of them. thanks. sue

While these thing are unpleasant to look at they won't hurt you. I have a couple of hens who do this. It's hard to identify the offender, though I would like too. I have one that has quite a streak of blood in hers and they won't hatch as far as I can tell. It's not something one wants to pass on anyhow.

Hi guys! I asked you this last year and you had great suggestions, so am asking again this year. What to do for my birthday, which is tomorrow! :) So far I have a) mystic aquarium (really far) or b) Vermont teddy bear factory and shelburne museum. In that vein, any other suggestions? Already been to howe caverns and ausable, don't want to do great escape. Did lake george cruise last year. No movies I want to see that are out right now. Think of something your 14 year old daughter would find fun, no wine tastings or fancy dinners. Must allow jeans. :p

As for chicken stuff. need to rehome more birdies, trying to decide who should go. If anyone near me needs laying hens, reasonably young 1ish years old to 1.5 and not hatchery birds, let me know what you are looking for!! =) My fridge is jam packed full of eggs and I'm trying to do school and work, so need to have less time spent on birdie maintenance. Sides, I have county boy birds here and they are so cute I don't need anything else !:)
