NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry about your loss. Maybe have her pay for an electric fence around coops/runs? Have you let her know you don't feel safe around the dog?

She doesn't care. She is a "her house, her rules" person. I hope that my fiancée and I can get back on our feet financially so we can leave.

Anone live near portagevile? Drove thru there today on my way to return George my BCM and saw a giant rooster roosting on a metal pole. I saw him before in the same spot. I thought I got a picture of him but I can't find it :(. It's on 436 in the town center where the road turns sharp at the river. He is one handsome guy but I have never seen other chickens around

He is some kind of Pit mix. I have nothing personal against pits and pit mixes, when raised right they can be wonderful dogs, I owned a pit mix myself for many years.. This dog however has an unknown past. My mother in law adopted him. She will not crate him, she will not chain him...

she doesn't think she has to work with him. She thinks that he will just be a good dog because her older dog is a good dog. Not all dogs are naturally good, most need training and work.
I don't think I've ever posted anything in this thread before, but now that the dog has had a taste I don't think your problem will be easily fixed. We have a pit mix here and he's the flock protector. As long as he's outside with the birds, nothing comes near them. I wish he spent last night outside as we lost a black runner baby and had another injured. Owl would be my guess.
Sorry to hear about your dog problems and it doesn't look like you can do too much about it.

Lynzi, Was that you that I was emailing back and forth about my Khakis?

I am sorry for everyones trouble. I am learning to not give unasked for advice , so I must be growing.

Went you this afternoon to collect eggs and the two that started out under a black EE and are now under another hen are gone. They are now chicks. Crazy birds just keep playing musical chairs with the nest boxes.

I've moved the young BM roo to the BM coop and a pullet, hoping these two new chicks will be okay.

I'm at a loss as to where to move these hens as they hatch the chicks. The young ones are not so friendly toward them. Unlike the Dels who seem to tolerate new arrivals.

I have a young pullet that I thought was a roo but I now think is not. She's a Del but the body type is not good. Otherwise she may be a Del/EE cross with a straight comb. I'll be posting her on CL as I don't have any use for her. If she is an EE cross she won't lay colored eggs and if she is all Del her body type is wrong so she has to go.

I have BM hens on Del eggs so there will be more chicks I hope. I do need to remember to candle the eggs. I keep forgetting.

TOB - I do see you've got your hands full. I do hope in the future you can consolidate your birds. I'm sure with the two boys you can put some of the responsibility on them even at their young age. I surely am not up to more than my chickens. I did consider two sheep, but figured to spend the money to send DW to TX to see the Prince of Conroe instead.

This is from http://www.portagevillechapel.org/guestbook.htm - I even thought that downtown Portageville was charming – what with the beautiful rooster wandering the street. The vocalization of the rooster was the only punctuation in a quiet place.
Add a fan to draw air in or blow air out ..I also have a mini sprayer / mister that sprays water.. lowers the temperature by 10 degrees or so . they dont like a hose spray though.
Give them ice water ..or I freeze my bread crumbs & give them partly frozen or in cold yogurt .
A tree near the coop is good for some shade ...
My hubby didn't want to spend all this summer finishing a run like he did last year doing the shack!! Soooo.... We spent the money now so we won't have to worry about doing it all over again down the road.
I worry so much being so close to the creek and state land beyond our property. Being protected land there are aaaaaall kinds of animals back there!!! We've seen two types of Fox on our property, and thank goodness for the ravens they alarm everyone if anything is amiss!!!!!
I am thankful for the little birdies that told me a fox was near ! I even told them so ...

Welcome To The Thread / Flock
I agree the dog has tasted chicken ..It is going to be hard to keep him out .

Sorry about Wookie
I hope you can move out soon too ..Sounds like the dog & her are a match

Morning all! Another scorcher and my lungs are already protesting. Not good weather for asthma. Had all the silkies out freeranging yesterday. Of course Legolas goes charging after Little Mans hens and Little Man kicks his can back to his coop. That boy just dont learn. Legolas girls were busy with the babies showing them what to eat and completely ignored him and the whole ruckus going on. One of the terrorists wandered into the run and Legolas was fit to be tied but didnt dare challenge her to get out. Guess he didnt want to risk getting his can kicked again! lol Love that boy despite his slow learning curve!

Cooked up a huge mess of eggs yesterday and added some cod liver oil to it. I think it took everyone all of 30 seconds or less to devour everything. Bought some cheap cans of cat food for the terrorist coop and will give them some today. If it helps with the picking, I will have to find different feed to get them. They are the only ones who are exhibiting this problem.

Breella---sorry for your loss. I hope you do get back on your feet soon and can move. I wonder how mil would react when her dog injures someone, escpecially a child? Although it sounds like she doesnt really care.

County boy---these hens are conspirators I tell you. I need my silkies laying as I have people who want eggs. Nope, they have decided to go broody again.

Really??? This is what I have been working towards ladies!!!!

Cut me some slack here!

Rancher---I think your hens started this whole broody mess. I also think they are messing with you by playing musical nest boxes and lets hide the eggs and chicks and drive the man batty! I am hereby returning any mail addressed to my hens from your hens. I've got enough problems!

Have a good day everyone! Gotta go make chicken gatorade before I go to work.

All our Khakis are gone now. We are trying to concentrate on Runner Ducks.
Nuttyfrom6kids took the last 2 girls and all the babies.
You could always try Runners next year :)
