NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning everyone, I haven't been on in almost a week been busy helping my dad he has heart problems, diabetes, spinal stenosis, and Parkinson. He had been in and out the hospital which postponed his prostate surgery, and on top of that he's buying a house. I'm so tired just can't get enough sleep, class is hard, my son is running me ragged, work is hard.

My 3 dogs are great the puppy is learning fast, the 3 cats are good though one has a slight skin issues. The chickens are good laying is back to normal, I'm working on my hoop coop almost done.

My garden is awesome especially for my first time. My snow peas and beans are ready for picking.

I hope everyone is doing well I'm just unable to read six days of post!

Morning Everyone

Working this morning and then heading out to Lowes or Home Depot. I want to get these coops raised up off the ground so I need some supplies. Also have to look over the bigger girls before letting them out today. I think I'm going to drag a big bath up there with me and just dunk them to be on the safe side even if I don't see anything. I think I'm safe with them because they dust bath every day. Seems to be the second thing they like to do in the morning, they run over to the duck house and pool for water (even though they're CLEAN water is right next to the door of their coop!)

and then they head over to the porch and go underneath it to bath in all the dirt/sand under there.

Finally got an egg yesterday out of the big girls coop! Now if only those silkies would start laying! So much for hatching out any more chicks this year. By the time I get a silkie egg it'll be too late to do anything with it.

Miquwid - Hope things slow down for ya soon and you're able to relax and have some time for yourself. Sorry things have been so hectic, sounds like you have a lot on your plate.

I was at Lowes yesterday to buy 1 x 3's to make window frames for the coop (hardware cloth windows). I scored 4 pieces of 2 x 4's, various lengths, for 1 cent each! Just the right size for a couple new roosts I need.

You've certainly got a tough row to hoe these days. Hang in there and hoping for easier times for you soon...also for better health for your dad. It's tough to be in the "sandwich generation" where you're responsible for caring for both kids and an aging parent(s). God bless!

NOOK-NOOK,

was it you that just posted a recently completed pen with the metal roofing? It looks FANTASTIC. What a lot of nice, shady room for your flock. Nice job!

QUESTION FOR ALL WITH REGARD TO THIS UNGODLY HEAT AND HUMIDITY:

Does anyone use a fan in their coop(s) ??

I have a heavy, safe extension cord plugged into an outdoor outlet nearby for now and therefore have the capability of running a fan for the girls. The coop, despite 2 windows and a large screen door, still gets pretty hot. We use fans for the horses at the barn, but they SWEAT. So the moving air cools them by evaporation. Chickens don't sweat, so will the fan be a benefit?

Please weigh in. I am worried about this heat. I keep the birds outside as much as possible, but there are times when I have to have them inside due to the logistics of 2 (temporarily) separated flocks.

THANKS!

I dont really do much for mine in the heat seeing as how they free range so if they're hot, they find cool places to hang out - the woods, under the porch, under one of our cars, etc. However I'll be worrying about the silkies the next few days it's hot now that I've moved the coop. They've been in this spot before and have done just fine. They're run is under their coop so it's shaded at least. I know some people have mentioned misting their chickens. While I was misting mine with that solution yesterday they were loving it! I brought some bread out to lure them close to me so I could do it and they never moved away. I think they were relieved to be wet and cooled off. LOL

All I do for the heat is make sure they have extra waterer's that I fill with ice. I did give them some electrolytes in one waterer today. Also frozen fruit like watermelon, blueberries and apples. Extra water in them to keep them hydrated. I also gave them some peat moss to dust bathe in. Mine also free range sort of. 200 ft of electric netting gives them plenty of space and I have trees on the border that give them shade plus they have 2 shade huts as well.

I won't use a fan. I want my guys to be able to tolerate the heat on their own. I have a hoop coop but I put the sides up and have vents at the top and on the sides so why its warm in their its def cooler than outside.

They are panting in this heat but still forage in the cool spots in the morning and evening. During the heat of the day they are all under the huts in the shade napping.

x2 I feel the more you do for an animal to make it comfortable, the weaker you make it because they now rely on that comfort from you.
