Sorry about your loss. Maybe have her pay for an electric fence around coops/runs? Have you let her know you don't feel safe around the dog?
Good morning everyone, I haven't been on in almost a week been busy helping my dad he has heart problems, diabetes, spinal stenosis, and Parkinson. He had been in and out the hospital which postponed his prostate surgery, and on top of that he's buying a house. I'm so tired just can't get enough sleep, class is hard, my son is running me ragged, work is hard.
My 3 dogs are great the puppy is learning fast, the 3 cats are good though one has a slight skin issues. The chickens are good laying is back to normal, I'm working on my hoop coop almost done.
My garden is awesome especially for my first time. My snow peas and beans are ready for picking.
I hope everyone is doing well I'm just unable to read six days of post!
I dont really do much for mine in the heat seeing as how they free range so if they're hot, they find cool places to hang out - the woods, under the porch, under one of our cars, etc. However I'll be worrying about the silkies the next few days it's hot now that I've moved the coop. They've been in this spot before and have done just fine. They're run is under their coop so it's shaded at least. I know some people have mentioned misting their chickens. While I was misting mine with that solution yesterday they were loving it! I brought some bread out to lure them close to me so I could do it and they never moved away. I think they were relieved to be wet and cooled off. LOLNOOK-NOOK,
was it you that just posted a recently completed pen with the metal roofing? It looks FANTASTIC. What a lot of nice, shady room for your flock. Nice job!
QUESTION FOR ALL WITH REGARD TO THIS UNGODLY HEAT AND HUMIDITY:
Does anyone use a fan in their coop(s) ??
I have a heavy, safe extension cord plugged into an outdoor outlet nearby for now and therefore have the capability of running a fan for the girls. The coop, despite 2 windows and a large screen door, still gets pretty hot. We use fans for the horses at the barn, but they SWEAT. So the moving air cools them by evaporation. Chickens don't sweat, so will the fan be a benefit?
Please weigh in. I am worried about this heat. I keep the birds outside as much as possible, but there are times when I have to have them inside due to the logistics of 2 (temporarily) separated flocks.
THANKS!
TOB
x2 I feel the more you do for an animal to make it comfortable, the weaker you make it because they now rely on that comfort from you.All I do for the heat is make sure they have extra waterer's that I fill with ice. I did give them some electrolytes in one waterer today. Also frozen fruit like watermelon, blueberries and apples. Extra water in them to keep them hydrated. I also gave them some peat moss to dust bathe in. Mine also free range sort of. 200 ft of electric netting gives them plenty of space and I have trees on the border that give them shade plus they have 2 shade huts as well.
I won't use a fan. I want my guys to be able to tolerate the heat on their own. I have a hoop coop but I put the sides up and have vents at the top and on the sides so why its warm in their its def cooler than outside.
They are panting in this heat but still forage in the cool spots in the morning and evening. During the heat of the day they are all under the huts in the shade napping.
