NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry to hear hear of everyones troubles this weekend. My friend who lost her entire flock to a fox 2 weeks ago (2 weeks from laying age) lost a chick this weekend and had another one act sick. So far the second one seems to be pulling through and the other 4 are doing good.

I am FINALLY making some headway on the new coop! It has doors! I did dutch doors so I can peek in with out having them try to escape on me. Nesting box is going in this weekend! I was thinking of making it "broody friendly" if anyone has any tips on a different feature so I can keep the broody with the flock (I'm banking on my buff orpington to go broody). Size, elevation from bedding etc.

Make your nest boxes removable from the wall so you can move the whole box to another location when it comes hatch time or to the floor after the chicks hatch. I just put two holes larger than a screw head in the back of each box and left the screws long enough to hang the boxes on. Had to put a small board behind the bottom of the box so it didn't swing in the wind and it works wonderfully for my birds. They go broody in a box, I move it to the floor as soon as the first chick hatches. Since she isn't going to leave the rest of the eggs, she sits where ever I put her.

As so many of you have been nice enough to respond to my question regarding a fan in the coop, it would be hard for me to answer each one by one -- but I'd like to. Really, thanks to all for your advice...what has worked for you, tips, etc. You guys and girls are invaluable -- THANK YOU. I am taking everything in!

Use your common sense your chickens will thrive .

You guys have been talking about the heat and humidity(with 60 posts, I skimmed most, not read thoroughly so I may have missed this). What is really making me crazy is the bugs!! I can not remember a time when the bugs have been this bad. Mosquitoes, horseflies, deer flies,no-see-ums, biting stable flies,and those horrible, horrible, black and orange monsters! My horse hears them coming and he gets nervous. I get to ride for 20 minutes before there are too many, unless i want to spend the whole ride cantering to out run them, which I do sometimes because I can not keep him fit on 20 minutes of walking and trotting a day. Sheesh! I wish the bugs would go away!!

The bugs will go away. I promise. However it will be WINTER when they do, with it's own set of problems.

I am vacationing, this year, on a lake. I am hoping that the EPA Didn't halt spraying for insects to "help us stay healthy", cuz these bugs will cause mental health to falter, and rapidly.

We are putting an expanded deck on the back of our house (somehow 6'x8' didn't seem big enough. LOL) I asked for Ray to screen in 1/3 of the deck. He said "why, we don't have many insects here." (We do treat the pond out back, so there are fewer than you would expect) THEN he sat out there one night as it cooled off. Suddenly it was all his idea to screen in part of the deck. Crack me up. I'm not even arguing with him, as long as I get my screened in portion of the deck, I don't care who gets credit for the "idea".

in the winter I have multiple layers of clothing to put on to go outside and can still be cold. So I heat my house to stay warm. But I don't heat coops. Same difference. I take the logical approach. They are birds. Wild birds do fine all winter and summer long. If birds were not capable of adapting to weather all pheasants, grouse, eagles, hawks, turkeys ducks and geese etc would have been extinct a LONG time ago.
