NY chicken lover!!!!

Eprinex does come in a smaller bottle, 8.5 oz. I got it at Tractor Supply and thought it was expensive...I'd be willing to share, cause I'll never use this all up. Ke5hde, I think we're neighbors. I am on a hill above Butternut Creek. Do you have a Speckled Sussex roo?

Nope. We have a SS hen though. We aren't too far from the trailer park on Apulia Rd.
The only roo's around here are all young still. Barnevelder's and bantam Cochins.
A guy down the road from us has chickens too. It may be him.

Last hatch is taking place as I type. 34 of 48 made it to lockdown. All 8 duck eggs still going strong. Glad we seemed to have taken care of our thermometer issue. We decided that we're done hatching for the season and let all the birds free range together today. Still have plenty of broodies though.

Hope she gets better. We had a broody Brahma go through the same thing after raising guinea keets.

I went out this morning to pick blackberries and got eaten alive. I had mosquitoes on top of mosquitoes. I even made sure to soak myself down with repellent but they didn't care.
On the way back up the sidewalk I just about had a heart attack when I walked up on a 3ft snake. The big dog was with me and spotted it. It was game on then. He's not a fan of snakes either. After living in Texas for 8 years, the only good snake is a dead one and he did his job.

Chris

Looks like it might be a northern water snake, non-venomous and actually very beneficial to people. They help control vermin populations. We have a lot of snakes around our cottage in Canada, including the northern water snake, and you get used to them. You don't have to love them, for sure, but you don't have to be afraid of them. We get huge (4-5 feet long) rat snakes up at the lake. They're actually protected up there. Garter snakes eat a lot of bugs, and I'd rather the snakes than the bugs which are awful this year.

(From a chicken owner's vantage point, I cannot speak from experience however...maybe you've had problems with snakes in your coop?)

Update on my little Americauna girl: Didn't look much better this morning, but as I was checking her over I noticed little tiny white things crawling around her vent. EW! She got a quick bath in water & palmolive and trimmed a few of her feathers. Dumped some DE on her rear and sprinkled all over the shavings (and a little in her food) in the dog crate. So now the question: In her poor health state, should I try worming her? She is banty sized right now, so it was the .25 dose? I think my dad has a bottle of Eprinex around, so could get just the dose from him without buying the whole gallon.
And then I threw all my clothes in the washing machine. Now I got Lynzi's heebie jeebies and feel creepy crawly all over just thinking about it.

Lapeerian,

sure hope your little Americauna can get stronger. She's had a tough go of things. You're taking good care of her!

No snakes in the coop. I guess after living in east Texas for 8 years, we got used to killing anything that slithered. I personally don't go out of my way to kill them here but if the dog see's one, it's as good as dead.

Oh - I'm certainly not judging - and from Texas, most of the critters could carry a nasty bite and poison !

Just I dislike what the snakes eat more than the snakes.... Also - I've not had trouble with them and my chickies - that might change my tune.

Hope everyone is staying as cool as possible - Pyxis - you are lucky your cool is tucked into a forested glade !!! Bet your chickies are the most comfortable today. Haven't heard from you lately - so hope it is only being overworked and that is all.

Yep! Love my little forest. Lots of garter snakes here too, but I actually love the things. I used to chase them around and catch them growing up. The birds did stay nice and cool today - lots of nice dust baths and swimming for the ducks. I also had to move the marans out to the workshop because they realized they could fly out of the brooder and pooped all over my floor and unplugged the incubator AGAIN. So the silkies are in and the marans are out.

Also, I'll most definitely post pictures of my hoop coop as building goes along...still don't have those panels. But we're on vacation next week so my father will have no excuse. And of course you're welcome to come see it, too. How are your marans doing?

My little Marans are connected at the wing .... and have been free range with the flock for 3 days now ! I clucked over them like a hen the first day - I was exhausted making sure I hovered around.

They don't know how to use the ramp into the coop yet - so they cry at night but won't let me catch them until dark and they huddle down.

New rooster treats them just like any other and the millies push them around a little - but not for long - they are starting to get nice and big !!! They squeeze out of my net with the millies and spend the day under their own tree. ha ha But I can't my net to hold a charge - too much grass and no way to wack it down - so I don't go anywhere - out of fear these will get eaten by a fox or neighbor's dog..... I can't freaking figure it out and a new secure run or coop that I can lock them in for more than sleeping is months away - the barn has to be finished first. I am going crazy.
