WOW! It really looks like she needs stitches.

Miquid great job on the hoop coop. I actually thought the covering was metal roofing when I saw the inside picks but then my blonde moment passed and I realized its the silver tarp :D

If you put vents on top and secure them with zip ties roof tar around the vent to seal it up and the holes is the only thing I got to work. Nothing gets in now !!

And for anyone else looking for tarps for their coops. The one I got is white and it never feels hot or warm to the touch and it has sun on it all day. But it still provides shade inside and hopefully in the winter makes it brighter in the coop

Can you tell us what happened to her? Is/was she a naked neck? How is she behaving? Is she eating? Have you separated her from the rest of the flock?

Do you have some spray on Bacitracin? If so spray this on to prevent infection. Keep her clean. Though quite seriously I too think she should see a vet.

I had a hen with a nasty tear from a raccoon. Not as bad as that though. I separated her and used the bacitracin. She healed up nicely but had a nasty scar after things healed, but no feathers there. She was eventually reintroduced to the flock and was fine. Layed again too, but these things take time so be patient.

Where did you find the white one and how long have you had it? Holding up well? I have a silver one on mine but it still gets hot inside. I have large screens on each end and wire floor on each side (it is mounted on a trailer frame). Right now I have the sides rolled up for more air, even though some of the chickens jump out in the morning. And it is parked in the barn aisle, so stays shaded and still gets breeze.

The bugs will go away. I promise. However it will be WINTER when they do, with it's own set of problems.

I am vacationing, this year, on a lake. I am hoping that the EPA Didn't halt spraying for insects to "help us stay healthy", cuz these bugs will cause mental health to falter, and rapidly.

We are putting an expanded deck on the back of our house (somehow 6'x8' didn't seem big enough. LOL) I asked for Ray to screen in 1/3 of the deck. He said "why, we don't have many insects here." (We do treat the pond out back, so there are fewer than you would expect) THEN he sat out there one night as it cooled off. Suddenly it was all his idea to screen in part of the deck. Crack me up. I'm not even arguing with him, as long as I get my screened in portion of the deck, I don't care who gets credit for the "idea".

I AM GOING TO MONTANA NEXT TUESDAY!! And snow NEVER looked so good!!! The mosquitoes be dammed.!!!! Hope you get your deck screened in!

I got it from tarps plus.com. It's 10'x20'. It's suppose to be artic, uv and mildew proof. It's holding up great. It cut easily and is thicker than others I got. It also didn't seem to get those strings you get when a tarp tears or gets cut. But I did you duct tape in ends I had cut so it has a hem.

X,

I would keep her wound clean and would apply an anti bacterial cream(ointment). I had a hen attacked by a hawk with much feather loss and severe lacerations and she recovered with cleansing and ointment. Chickens can be very resilient. Be very cognizant of odd behavior with her. I would not remove her from her friends unless necessary. If she is eating and drinking, let her be. Maybe put electrolytes in her water if she seems stressed by the heat. I would be more concerned with infection from insects and dehydration(with this heat)than anything else. hopefully others will chime in with advice as well. good luck, ginny.

It would help us to know more information. What happened to her? How long ago did it happen? Cleansing is the most important. I had a hen that had been torn up on her back by the rooster. She healed up fine and it was quite bad. Don't give up hope. I cleaned the wound with peroxide when it first happened and then used Nustock on the wound (thick) for several days. Now i don't even know which hen it was.

I've seen hens come back from wounds as bad as this, as long as the skin around the wound is still alive. First, clean it out. I recommend using water with epsom salt in it as the epsom salt draws out infection. Don't let her drink the water though - epsom salt is a laxative and that's the last thing she needs. After it's clean, you need to put something on it. I recommend neosporin without pain relief, and this is really important. Then, you can try to cover it up with some soft gauze and wrap over that with vet wrap to keep her from pulling it off and other birds from getting at it. Don't wrap tight, and try as best as you can not to limit her movement. If you can't get it wrapped without limiting her, then just leave it open.

After a while, when it starts healing and looks better, you can put some stuff called Derma Clens on it, which you can get from a vet, or online here: http://www.amazon.com/Derma-Clens-D...F8&qid=1374025352&sr=8-1&keywords=derma+clens It softens the wound and stimulates the growth of new skin. My vet even prescribed it for my drake once when a predator took all the skin off the back of his head.

Please keep us updated on her!
