NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: I have read a lot about its benefits for animals & humans. I've been adding it to my hens feed since last fall. I don't add it to every bucket but they do get it a couple weeks a month (I use fermented feed)

I have no lice, mites or any other medical issues except bumble foot & that was my fault (a piece of chicken wire was sticking up that I put around the perimeter of the coop) 2 of my hens had prolapsed vent and since I started adding garlic and other herbs it is no longer noticeable.

I use it as a preventive and so far its worked :) And there is no garlic taste to the eggs.

Well been off here for a bit like 180 posts so no way I can catch up with that.

Noticed today one of my chickens combs/wattles has sores. I have a lot of flys atm and hopeing that's it. It's one of my bantam cochins that I think is a roo so maybe he got in a scuffle with my main roo.

Speaking of my main roo I chased him off my property today cause I was trying to get that chicken with sores and the roo came after me. I'm glad he protected the flock but not glad he came after me. Him and I have to set up some sorta agreement soon I think.

I put another dozen eggs in bator from lady at work. Five of 12 are fertile and healthy atm. Would be 6 but one has a blood ring like 3/4 way around the egg. I do have a problem with one egg that is fertile. It has cracks in it. Is that something to worry or will keeping humidity up make it ok?

What kind of spots? I wouldn't think flies would bite chickens but it the mosquitoes are bad around your house & they are biting the chickens you may have something else going on with your chickens.

How much garlic do you add? And I'm assuming you add powdered garlic? Do you buy it in bulk?

Morning all. I see some of you got rain. Its still hot and sunny here and supposed to hit 90 again. After running the ac all night the house if finally cooled off to an acceptable temp. Cats are happy and so am I. The tater tot boys are now trying to crow. They sound like the divas are squieezing their you know whats and their throats. These boys are going to be big. So far they are not bothering with the divas because if they try, they get a wicked peck on the head and chased if they are being particularly annoying. The tater tot girls are beginning to pink up so maybe they will start laying here in the next few weeks. Production has dropped the last 3 days due to the heat and I have only been getting a dozen eggs a day. I am trying to break my broody silkies but thats like nailing jello to a tree. I saw a few grasshoppers the last couple of days so I know they are hatching and out. Free food for the cheeps. I watched a good show on netflix last night called My life as a turkey. It was about this naturalist who ends up raising 16 wild turkey chicks from incubation to adulthood. It was really good.

Off to work today. Have a good day everyone.

Aaahhhhhhhh..... temperature is such a relief! I almost feel like grabbing a sweatshirt.
I discovered bug repellant for myself (natural). One of the creams I make is lavender, and I use essential oil (natural) rather than fragrance oil (synthetic). Lavender is a natural bug repellant, but I've also been reading lately about the vanilla being able to help with flies. So I added a little vanilla extract to my cream. I sat outside last night while the flock free ranged for over an hour. Not only did I smell awesome, I didn't have one bite.
The flock was so happy to go blackberry picking last night.

Quote: I dont measure the garlic. Just pour it in till it smells good or I think there is enough.
I use fresh garlic or the kind that comes in a jar in water. (I get it at BJs which is one of those stores that sells everything in big quanities) I have used the powdered garlic also but fresh has the most benefits.

Hmmm I have been looking for natural bug repellents. I get bitten up during the day as well. I figured I would look silly wearing mint or dryer sheets. I will have to see if I can find cream with these ingredients.

Do you think if I added lavendar & vanilla to something like vaseline or bag balm it would work just as well?

I'm sure it would, but I wouldn't use vaseline or bag balm (too greasy). Just use regular lotion. I'll bet Wegmans has lavender essential oil in the natural area, and make sure the vanilla is REAL vanilla and not immitation. Same with the lavender... use REAL EO and not a synthetic. You don't need much. For a Tbls of lotion, I would use just a few drops of EO and vanilla mixed in and then applied to you.

Just an extra note, some EO's can be dangerous in those quantities, but lavender is one of those that can be used in any amount, on anyone, including children and pregnant women.

I am missing 6 birds. When I went out to put them to bed, all the adults were in place, but only 3 teens and 3 babies. Looked all over for them, but couldn't find them or any sign. Nothing this morning. They had seemed fine earlie in the day. Maybe they will still turn up, but I wonder. the girls seem subdued.

Lynzi, I have Eprinex you could use. It is a big bottle and there is plenty. Your silkies would take even less per bird than the dose I have written on the bottle.
Pm me if you want to swing by.
