NY chicken lover!!!!

I am so in love with this new Roo! Funny, when I got him the pen today Duncan started crowing. Well then this newbie started crowing and man does he have a loud crow! All of a sudden I hear ANOTHER crow and it was my little lavender cockerel. I forgot for a min I now had THREE roosters! LOL Oh boy, thank god I live out in the sticks! I'm thinking of the names Caesar or Diablo for this new one. Unless my husband can come up with something better. He always makes fun of the names I come up with. I just love all the noises he makes. I video taped him a couple of times but he wasn't as vocal in them. I'm waiting to get a good video before I post it.

Pharm ~ I'm so sorry to hear about Mean Marge. Even worse not knowing what caused her to pass.

CountryBoy ~ Cute lil' chick ya got there!

ke5hde ~ Those are cute lil barnies (or almost barnies). One of them seems to have some nice coloring, no? Stinks when you purchase chicks and they're not what you expected them to be. I learned that lesson last year when I was impatient with finding good quality silkies and ended up with what looked more like hatchery stock.
The little roo has the best coloring of all 3. The 2 girls are all wrong, color on 1 and lacing on the other. My youngsters will look so much better, they already have better lacing even at 4wks old. Chris

Well forget the strong man names, I think I'll be naming this one Houdini! He managed to get out of his pen after I tied down a tarp on top of it so he couldn't fly out. Apparently I didn't do a good job, came outside to check on him and here he was....

Do you think they're afraid of him? Lol

Well I have a few chickens laying now I just don't know how many. My light Sussex lays almost every day now. We had one darker brown in big coop last night and then two lighter brown in there today. Yesterdays darker brown was a double yolker but small yolks normal sized egg. Today's light brown eggs, one was small and part of shell not developed almost just membrane, the other egg was broken but shell was soft. So I guess it's time to change to layer/oyster shells. The dark egg yesterday and one of the light eggs today was in a nest box the soft broken one was in corner empty nothing inside so I hope it leaked out and no one desided to eat it.

As for planting we tried planting some stuff the kids started in school and I think we only have 1 of the 4 plants alive. It don't sound like people are having much luck this year.

Sorry to hear about mean marge.

Evening all. A little rain here right now. I have a question for those who live in sullivan county. I have a friend who is new to chickens and is looking for organic feed for them. They are starting to lay. She wants good feed for them as she is trying to do the right thing for them.

Everyone is out freeranging. Doesnt look like anyone else is feeling poorly so I am happy about that.

Have a good evening.

So silkies how old to tell what they are sex wise or am I just having to see if they lay? My lovely TSC silkies are crazy. The one with no poof on head or leg/feet feathers has a walnut comb the one that has a poof and leg/feet feathers has a straight comb coming in it looks like. I'm guessing both roos one has a good spur spot comeing in I think. Here are a few pics. And to top it off I have no idea what they was mixed with or what egg color they will lay if they maybe are hens. And as you see from the back ground of first pic I have bantam cochin's so probably same egg size I would think cept my silkies are almost the size of my reds.
