NY chicken lover!!!!

it would be more for chaseing him and tapping him away not full blown hits. I was thinking a real small one like 1/4in pvc about 3ft long so it will bend also. More for the kids than me I don't want them chaseing him with hands when he goes after them and they couldn't handle a rake too good they would probably trip over it lol. Also thought of one of those big fat red plastic baseball bats but since red might make him come after them. Just figured it was a thin flexable plastic. This is only if he don't straighten up here soon and relax some around the kids and us picking up the hens.

Today, my horse showed some very rude manners and flung open his stall door while I was coming in. He pushed right past me and thought he had made a great escape, but the paddock was closed outside the barn. The wooden handle of a plastic pitchfork worked great to herd him back into his stall and give him a "whump on the rump" as a reminder that this kind of rude (and dangerous) behavior is not going to be tolerated. I'm sure it didn't hurt him, but it did startle him.

Hi everyone... Thanks all for the advice on egg (eating) safety.

I ate the egg and it was wonderful !! YUM !!

For curiosity's sake, I do wonder when Helen laid it. I wonder if she will lay them with some regularity this early on, or is it patchy at this stage of her laying "career" ?

LYNZI -

Your rooster is a show stopper. Wow! He is just GORGEOUS. What type is he? Is that Stella next to him? He dwarfs her!

Best of luck with your new, handsome fella.

Thanks TOB, I am so in love with him! Hasn't shown any aggression yet thank god! He seems to be minding his manners with the ladies too. I've caught him "in the act" with Stella and my son's hen already. So at least I know he won't kill them with his size! Yes that is Stella next to him. I was saying last night how they look like young pullets next to him. He's an English Orpington, and I guess they are bigger than the American Orps but I didn't think he's be this huge! This girl said that all her Roos are the size of her turkeys. But everyone loves them and their temperament. I love all the noises he makes. I think we're going to name him Gru, after Steve Carell's character in Dispicable Me. My friends daughter thought of it today and I was like OMG, perfect! So Gru it is! And it's even more perfect cuz he makes noises just like the minions LOL

I just can't go through 344 posts. Hope everyone had a good week last week. We went camping this past weekend and the bugs were awful. Mosquitos were biting through bug spray and clothes. We have 4 new baby ducks. I would say the hatch was just over 50% even with the temp and humidity being high during most of the incubation period. I'm satisfied with that.

Here is a egg quote I found
Eggs will stay fresh longer if not washed or refrigerated when you take them from the hen. There is a protective coating from the mother when they are laid that allows them to stay fresh without refrigeration. When they are washed this is removed and they need to be refrigerated from this point on. However, not washing them and leaving them at room temp on the kitchen counter keeps them good the longest. I lived all summer on a farm where we practiced this technique with great results. In south Georgia, not "another country" lol. Also, as long as eggs are out of direct sunlight, they will be fine if not picked up for a couple days. Always float them before eating to make sure they are still good. Sinkers are winners. Floaters are bad. They will stay fresh on the counter, unwashed, for at least 3-4 weeks. I've seen many stay fresh longer. Only down side to leaving them outside a couple extra days is the possible attraction of snakes or other animals that will eat them and/or harm the chickens. Then they also know where to go next time to find more eggs.

Thanks! I'm sure I'll have plenty of eggs to share once my girls start laying again! Although, I think my buff orp is going thru her first real molt. Maybe that's why she's not laying??? I broke her of her broodiness a couple of weeks ago. So I'm thinking maybe this is the reason she's not laying.
