I wish i could atm i dont even know what i'm going to do with all these eggs if even half of them hatch prob build another wooden brooder. I'm just trying to line up a person to get hatching eggs next year early spring to hatch out figure i can build another coop while they grow out in brooder some.

I try not to get much over 60% but we have different incubators. I've noticed in the past that I've drown chick's at lock down because of high humidity. I'm dry hatching this batch so I've been around 25-30% and will probably bring it to 55-60% at lock down in hopes of not losing as many this time.

I think that is my problem ..I drown them in humidity .
We are done trying for this year ...20 chickens is enough ...we will thin out some of the roos as they mature .
I am hoping to get 2-6 hens out of the 11 ones I got from Cass .

Jlaw I have buffs and they were gotten from East Coast Silkies, and Catdance Silkies they are not laying yet but I am sure by spring they will be

Rancher I know Carols Crafts in Rome Has Llama wool Yarn it is pretty expensive though but all of her yarn is and that is why I don’t usually buy it there.

Thanks nutty i'll have to keep you in mind. It does seem buffs are less common. I don't know why. I like them then again I like the straight black but I cant sell the kids on those so buff is what we want lol. My daughter is "has to have lots of hair" meaning big poof on head. My son don't care so much I told him in a few years we will get him what ever type he wants. He's wanting LF chickens which I know he cant handle yet. My main thing with him showing I want an easy bird for him to show but show quality. I'm not a fan of the meat birds in 4-H showing. Made our fair a sad sight of birds. Something about big white birds that barely look like they can stand and dirty just don't do it for me.

Ya'll talking of wool makes me wish I got info from the people spinning wool and yarn at our fair. They had some real real soft wool. I think it was alpaca. The showed us the difference of breeds sheep wool. Was great learning I think the kids liked it. I know my daughter was trying to con a hat off them that the husband makes. It had some pink felt horse on the front of it. So I don't know how much she really cared about it but I know son seemed to like it.

Hi All - hope all of you have fun at the fair ! It is fun to meet each other like that.

As for fertile .... the one side that has not been talked about too much is the hen side ... it is not like one mating will fertilize all the possible egg cells at once for the rest of her life .... so the well of sperm she is holding onto is going to be used for only soon to be upcoming eggs ... the eggs that are nearly ready to form are the ones you are concerned about when trying to plan the parents .... as they form and grow, that is when they can become fertilized from any live sperm inside the hen.

If you want certain parents you really have to isolate the breeders for at least 3 weeks and a month is really optimum. ISOLATE ! because even if you have a shy roo, a roo you Swear the other never lets get to his favorite hens .... I have to tell you - they sneak mate ! You just can't be sure which is the father if you have a mix of roos loose with hens .... so remember the isolate and don't gather eggs until after the 3 - 4 week mark rule. You don't have to have anything fancy - it is just for a short while and a dog run or any little place will do for a little over a month - then you can let them back with the flock when you have gathered all the eggs you want from that pair. I always keep mine in a pen they can see the others through, so there is no issue about reintroductions to the flock. You may have that issue if your breeder pen is not visible to the main flock.

For anyone living around Rt. 31 and the Rogues Roost golf club, you have a late season fox with kits very active in the area. I saw mom and at least two, possibly three Kits tonight while working.

For anyone living around Rt. 31 and North Road, fearless fox. Not sure if Rabbid or just curious but actually walked towards my car when I stopped to try to photograph it. Large adult, possibly male.

(I deliver the Post Standard out that way and get a good look at the local wildlife at night)

This is what I was getting at. But if Rancher is saying an egg can't be re-fertilized, then I'm assuming if a hen is fertilized by roo A then her eggs wouldn't be fertilized by Roo B, even if he were to mate with her the next few days, until the end of those 4 wks....correct? That rooster A would have to be removed from the picture for at least 4 wks before you can be sure that Roo B would be the rightful parent to that offspring.

That would be my guess. If roo A is removed, there's still a chance he could fertilize her eggs, though the chance would be lessened as time passes... but still the possibility through the 4 weeks.

That's the last time dh gets to flock sit for me. I had somewhere to be all day yesterday so left dh in charge of feeding/watering and putting the flock to bed. I reminded him to check their feed around 5 or 6 because they usually need a refill by then.
This morning both feeders were (I swear) licked clean and the flock just about bowled me over getting to food. At least they still had water.
He forgot.

And confessed he didn't even count them last night.
