NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma, I haven't bought anything yet, but I went to the store and looked and held some. A friend has recommended a Ruger 10-22. I think he doesn't want me to land on my can if I shoot the thing.

Hi everyone.

I'm curious (and it's been a while since this "Tough Old Bird" had a typical question!) ...

I'm estimating that my older pullets (with the exception of the Marans who is already laying) will start laying relatively soon. The Delaware's comb and wattle are REALLY super red and waxy, so I think she's next. We'll have to see about the Columbian Rocks. I'm guessing within a month or so for them. Anyway, if the birds are just starting up laying as the days are actually getting shorter, what usually happens naturally? Will they start up just to stop? Do they lay once in a while through winter? Then there is the whole 1st molt thing, and I'm not sure when that will occur.

I am considering a pistol in the near future. Have never owned one, but feel it is certainly my right to. I'll take a safety and operations class when I am ready.

So you have maybe a mild case of Morehens Disease, but not too serious....YET.

I guess, I try to keep it around 10ish now that I have the ducks. I'll be keeping some orps that I hatch once I get a bigger coop. I have someone working on one for me.

I'll definitely keep this little orp mix chick, I just love it's coloring!

I think that handguns are better for close, and long barrels are more accurate for a distance, and I really hope the predators are at a distance. Also all the paperwork and permit stuff would be a pain, IMO. It is certainly your right, though.

Lynzi, your. Addiction may be more severe than we thought. The words " I don't count the silkies..." are red flags to your condition.

Well it's not that I don't count them, I just look at it like they're not birds that are out in my yard free ranging, so I don't have to worry about them as much as I do the other ones?? IDK Does that make sense? LOL It's not like I put as much work into the silkies as the other birds/coops. I walk up there, see that they're fed and watered and thats about it. I can't let them out with the others out there. And I had a hawk out my yard yesterday going after Stella! So they definitely won't be out for a while. This hawk came outta nowhere. I thought she was running because she was kind of close to the road and a car was coming. So she darted into the woods but then I saw this hawk come down but she got to the woods in time to get away from it. It took off above the trees.

My want is less for predators than just for fear of the unknown trend in a giant and over-stepping government. But let's not ruin a good thread by going there, haha!!! Good luck on narrowing your search and purchasing the firearm that's the best fit for you, Glasshen. I know you have issues with hungry critters.

Good point!

Lynzi, is the chick you mention (keeping) the one with the 2-tone grayish coloration? If so, from my memory, that one is tremendously CUTE.

OK....What's up with this now:

Just went up to the coops because I was looking around and couldn't find my son's BO hen. Looked in the coop and there she was laying in the nestbox. I already got an egg from her this morning, then Agnes the BR, then Stella. I kept the two eggs from Agnes and Stella out of the fridge in case I decide to hatch one more time. But I know all three eggs are from today. Well I kicked her out to see if she was sitting on anything and wasn't. She goes back into the nestbox which made me concerned that she might be broody again? 5 minutes later she comes out with something in her mouth. Well stupid her whatever it is, she should have stayed inside with it because now everyone is following her around. It looked yellow straw from the nestbox but brighter. So I looked in the nestbox again and there was yellow yolk in there. Is this normal for her to be laying any kind of anything after her egg she layed this morning?!?! Sooo weird!
