NY chicken lover!!!!

I had a pullet about a month or so ago that was worse. I cleaned it good and put on some triple antibiotic on it until it scabed over. I kept her away from the others until it was 90% healed now you can not tell she ever had a boo boo.

Good luck with yours.

Stony- My brother was a hunter and loved using his smoker to cook the game. It was so good. Love seeing your food.

Pharm- I understand completely. I get the same feelings.

We now have 3 empty pens, which was nice for DH at feeding time. Thankyou to some of our chicken friends for buying our excess birds. It is was a big help for us. I still have 3 free young roos if anyone wants them: splash orp, del, and cochin buff brahma bantam cross.
Speaking of pears, i have to get DH out to pick our tree. The pears are causing the tree to bend over. I put DH to work on tomatoes on sunday-25 quarts of sauce done. Tomorrow i go for another sono just as a precaution to check on the baby. In office yesterday the baby had a good heart rate and movement. I lost 5 pounds since thursday though. I made sure i ate extra at dinner, the baked potatoes made that easy though. Dr said i shouldn't go to DH family reunion in ithaca on saturday because he does not know what action will put me back into labor. I am really going to miss gram's cheesy potato casserole.

Morning!
Trying to decide if I should give the coops a good cleaning or let it go a couple more weeks and do it closer to winter. I've just been throwing new shavings in there from time to time. I'd like to at least move the duck pen to another spot before that whole area becomes mud.

Miquwid ~ Hope you're able to help that bird and get that wound healed. Could it be from a roo??

Glass ~ We don't BBQ that often either only because, well obviously that's all my husband does all day. LOL We do grill though. We throw everything on the grill. Actually I was at a friends a couple of summers ago and they were grilling pizza on the grill. It was sooooo good! I'd like to do that if I can get my hands on a good pizza stone. I'm hoping now that I'm not working, that I can find some good recipes and start cooking for us instead of it always being DH. I can only cook if I follow a recipe though, otherwise it's a disaster. LOL

Still not sure when we're doing the fair. It's probably going to be a last minute decision when we do decide to go. DH still isn't sure what day he's off this week/weekend.

Those with ducks, I've been noticing my KC female doing this weird thing now when she's walking with the others. She'll walk forward and keep looking back to the side towards the ground. I'll have to try to get a video of her doing it. Not sure if it's just a gesture or if I should be concerned. I've never seen her do it before two weeks ago. So as she's walking it's almost like she sees something in the grass as she's passing it and looks back at the ground beside her and then keeps on. Kinda like if were walking and thought you dropped something and looked down to the side/behind you? It's just really weird cuz she does it over and over and over again. Like a "tick" she has. LOL I'll try to get a video when I get back from the store.

miquid - hope your Brabanter heals up well. Mine is very prone to getting creamed by the older birds. Every time I try to put her in with them, she gets hammered. She is definitely slower and low-girl on the totem pole.

Xovan - cannot believe how well your severely injured pullet healed. WOW! That's great news.

Lynzi - your drake is very handsome indeed! How many chickens are you up to now, you addict, you!

Pharm - I still miss my Dad terribly, and he's been gone 20 years. Hard to believe. The 1st year is the toughest. Sorry for your sadness. I do understand. I've been photographing the deer and young bucks in their velvet lately. Some images made it to Syracuse.com (Dave Figura's outdoor blog / wildlife photo section, if you get a minute to check them out. )

All's well with my flock, except the continuing separation, but I am home from the crazy weekends away and things are a little easier now. Yesterday, I let Helen out with the young girls to do a little supervised free range (Helen is the boss lady, Marans hen -- only one laying so far). The Coronation Sussex challenged her, and although she kept making herself taller than the Marans, Helen took a swift shot at Cracker and that ended the challenge!

Cracker ran off like a scared school girl. She will have to be satisfied with being Queen of the Littles... for now, anyway. She is a BIG girl, though.

Thanks Everyone for your well wishes for now she seems to be good no swelling or nothing. So all is well, she is a bit stressed to be away from the flock she always stresses out when away Once she heals up more I will put her crate near the silkies so she can at least see them.

Xovan your naked neck looks amazing good job. I think she will be in permenantly with the silkies once she's healed. This way when my 2 leghorns and orp are of size and leave that coop to join the big girls there will be three chickens at least left in that coop. The silkies leave her alone not that she grew so they will do fine together.

Lynzi that baby is just so cute I love it. I'm not sure about the coops Mine are fairly easy so I just do fairly often. Maybe just scrape off some build up and a quick spray with ACV and when right before winter srub it good. I can't wait to see your newest coop.

That is strange about your BR I'm not quite sure what to think.

TOB it seems your Maran is the boss that is so cute. I love it when I see boss hens back down other hens I don't why I guess the whole pecking order is intriguing.

TAB I'm sorry you have to miss your reunion but I'm sure someone will bring you your fav dish. Plus while you wait for it to come your way you can just sit back and relax catch up on some tv and movies. I hope you can find homes for your roos.

PS I think I said Peaches when I meant pears LOL I have a peach tree and a friend who gives me peaches. Good pears are hard to find, I'm a little stressed out.

And yes she is completely quarentined, I was able to catch before anyone else knew she was hurt but it was almost passed up since she was acting so **** normal, thank goodness for double takes!

Chatty bunch today! lol. Hubby wanted me to make sure I called him DH on here for weedwacking the japanese knotweed in the ditch across the road. Never had allergies in my life, till we moved here. Narrowed it down to the knotweed, dont have that at my parents farm. And like the past 2 years, allergies progressed into sinus infection. Yay.
Luna is definitly broody. Going to try to buy some hatching eggs from Tab & Trav. If not, either put a call in to Deb where I got the last batch or to my fellow CNYers. Looking for some more blue/green egg layers to add in the flock. My experiment with tossing a couple hens in with the EE roo has failed. The EE hen hasn't laid an egg in over a month, but figured she was hiding somewhere. Still no eggs after a week in the Eglu. And the Ancona hen hasn't laid this week either. Probably just from the stress. Mostly getting pullet eggs here, so don't have any of my own to hatch.

Nobody wants these drakes....ugh. Posted another CL ad today and one on here. Not sure what else to do to rehome these. No one knows anyone interested in a couple of ducks??

One of my Khaki drakes flew over the fence today and was walking around and trying to get back in. I picked him up (ducks are SO MUCH easier to catch than chickens) took a couple of cell pics and told him it was his lucky day. I was too busy to butcher.

No one wants KC drakes. I'll end up sending mine to camp. Handsome little devils will be mighty tasty.

Her sister is laying a very dark egg, now, though I wish she'd lay it in a nest box and not on the floor.
hmm.png

Ah, finally! Helen started laying her 1st couple on the floor. Then made the switch to the nest box when I put a little ramp leading up to it. After a few days, I took the ramp down and she just hops up now that she knows the drill. Only 1 other day (just last week) did I find an egg on the floor, right under the nest box. For whatever reason, she laid one there...maybe couldn't make it up there in time? haha.

Hi miquid......It is definitely amusing to watch her keep the other girls in line. She is not a jerk about it and is rarely challenged. But the Coronation Sussex is the boss of the younger flock, so she got all high and mighty with the Marans. What was funniest of all is that the Sussex is definitely taller than the Marans, so when the Marans saw this, she just clearly had enough of all the posturing nonsense and clocked the Sussex a good one. Bigger isn't always boss in chickendom, eh?

LYNZI ...

YES! This is the chick I remembered seeing a pic of a while back and thought it had the most gorgeous coloration... like sterling silver and gun powder. Love it! Did you name him / her yet?

Evening all. Had a mostly good night with the cheeps last night until bill decided to go after flo for some reason. Luckily I got to her before he did a lot of damage but not fast enough to clock him a good one. She seems okay and I applied bluecote to her again. I waited till bill was in the coop and then put the red girls in before chicken momma went in and did some corrective action. I pulled him off the roost and he lost a handful of feathers escaping from me then frantically ran back and forth screaming as I chased him around a bit. He finally cowered in a corner and I grabbed him and pinned him to the floor. He submitted. The red sexlinks were just being viscious to the red girls as well so I stood inside with my small rake and every time one of them went for one of the red I clocked her one on her head. They finally got the message and everyone settled down to rest when I left. They were fairly quiet this morning when I went to let them out and Bill wouldnt leave the coop until I was back in the house this morning. He made no attempt to hurt flo tonight nor come any where near where I was. I think he learned his lesson. The sexlinks also gave me a little room. I hate to do those things but their aggresiveness was getting out of control. I know who will be going to camp next if it keeps up. Winter is coming and its less mouths to feed. I can always hatch new hens out. I understand chicken behaviour, etc, but I wont tolerate mean or aggressive chickens. Which reminds me...my Roger sandwich was delicious! Fresh homemade bread with mayo (hellmans) and pieces of roger spread out on the bread. Nothing like home grown chicken!

Four days until hatch day!

I picked some more pears this morning and was lucky enough to see a BEAUTIFUL green humming bird. Flew past my head while I was on the ladder and scared me good. Almost flew into the open door of the house.
