NY chicken lover!!!!

TOB - no I haven't named it yet, it would have to be something unisex since I won't know what it is for a while. I love it though. Even though I was devastated with the hatch, this little chickie kept me happy when it hatched out this beautiful color! ;-)

One of my Khaki drakes flew over the fence today and was walking around and trying to get back in. I picked him up (ducks are SO MUCH easier to catch than chickens) took a couple of cell pics and told him it was his lucky day. I was too busy to butcher.

No one wants KC drakes. I'll end up sending mine to camp. Handsome little devils will be mighty tasty.

At this point I don't even care what someone does with these two, they just need to go. Especially since I don't let them free range with the others because they keep wandering into the road!

plucking drakes is downright awful. Not looking forward to it and I may just pay to have them processed. Gotta get that number again from Ginny.

Which reminds me. You were describing duck behavior. The head back etc. When the bob and weave, while quacking I call it the funky duck. Seems to turn on the drakes.

I'm going to have to do something soon about the extra drakes. Seeing a lot of barnyard sex lately.

LOL!!! Yea I figure it's some kind of mating thing. Especially since she doesn't do it all the time.

Quote: I can see your problem .
Could you give her away to someone as a pet chicken ? I am sure you know someone ? A little girl or boy ?
I have a similar problem ...I have a Samatra hen that is alot smaller than my other chickens ...esp my Rooster ..
I am afraid he will kill her if he tries to mate ...We were planning to eat all the roos we got as babies ..so I m thinking I have to keep a Samatra roo for her only ..

The post was meant for the person with pears not for that poor chicken with wounds. Please put her in her own pen. Chickens are cannibals...they see blood they peck. Use antiseptic. I use Bacitracin! Then when she goes in the coop/run put blukote on it!

Four days until hatch day!

I picked some more pears this morning and was lucky enough to see a BEAUTIFUL green humming bird. Flew past my head while I was on the ladder and scared me good. Almost flew into the open door of the house.

Hi Breella,

Here is a little female Ruby-throated Hummingbird that I photographed this past week. She is a little terror and fiercely defends the nectar and flower garden at our cottage. She does not share well. But she IS lovely. Here in the northeast, we have Ruby-throated Hummingbirds -- the males have the red throat, females are more subtly colored but still very pretty.

Last year when I got my big girls I never thought they would lay. They started in December and kept laying throughout the winter. No extra light and no heat. They laid all winter with no problems. I rarely had all 4 lay every day but I got at least 2 eggs a day through the winter. My 2 youngest tots still are not laying but I am hoping they will start in october or november and just keep at it like the big girls did last year. Different breeds but I dont forsee a problem. If some take some time off during the winter I am ok with it. All women need a break once in awhile

I hope I have similar luck! I am of the same philosophy that I think the hens need a natural break from laying. A few eggs through the season would be nice, though!
