I know two of my 19 week old hens are laying. I've found 2 eggs sitting outside in the run over the past few days. The interesting places hens start laying...I put a couple bantam eggs in the nest boxes hoping to encourage them to lay in there.

See black chickens at Green Fire for $5,000.00 a pair? Yes 5k, Five thousand smackers !!!

it is an all black chicken,” Cowin says. “So it’s very chic. Its feathers are black. Its organs are black. Its meat is black. So it’s very special, it’s a rare breed chicken.”
Collectors buy the bird because it’s exotic and beautiful. Cowin says you can collect the large, cream-colored eggs and eat them…

A $5,000 chicken? I'd rather put that money towards a car! LOL

Gramma ~ I remember that article earlier this year. I think someone else shared it at one point. That poor bird!

I have to say, I don't know what it is about these two chicks, but they are definitely the quietest and most layed back chicks I've ever had! I don't know if it's because I hatched them? But they aren't skittish at all like my other chicks were, they don't chirp all day long. Even when I take one out to hold, the other one remains calm and quiet. They are definitely really chilled out. I was in the the laundry room all morning cleaning it out (it's also where we keep our freezer and our pantry items) and they just layed there and watched. Didn't get all freaked out when I came near the brooder. Just hung out like no one was in there.

Gramma - your set-up is sweet. Lots of room and air. Lucky birds! You take very good care of them! The Sumatra is definitely significantly smaller than its peers. I hope your plan for a pair works out well.

Lynzi - I have heard others say that hummingbirds will get their point across that the nectar feeders need refilling! Also, one story about someone that was sitting in their yard and a hummingbird kept repeatedly buzzing between them and the feeder. After several moments of this, they got up, walked over to the feeder and discovered a praying mantis (these large insects actually catch and kill hummingbirds). Anyway, they removed the insect without harming it (they're protected) and the hummingbird could get back to the business of sipping nectar. I always remember that story!

Rancher,

the 1st thing I thought you were going to say after advising the place next to yours was up for sale was that you were going to buy it and expand your chicken operation! I'll bet someone could get it for under $15k....they'd just need to make a reasonable offer. Maybe with the $ they save, they can purchase those $5K chickens you mentioned! YIKES!
