NY chicken lover!!!!

I can see your problem .
Could you give her away to someone as a pet chicken ? I am sure you know someone ? A little girl or boy ?
I have a similar problem ...I have a Samatra hen that is alot smaller than my other chickens ...esp my Rooster ..
I am afraid he will kill her if he tries to mate ...We were planning to eat all the roos we got as babies ..so I m thinking I have to keep a Samatra roo for her only ..

I've thought about re-homing her, but we have gotten attached .... and more especially I would worry that someone else might not go through the same effort to keep her safe. She is kind of a special needs girl now in that she doesn't see very well and we need to be extra patient with her when putting her outside or getting her in. She really is very sweet and gentle, though. I am still guardedly optimistic that I will figure something out, but it's definitely a dilemma. I hope you can find a good solution to your situation, too, Gramma!!! (What do you do about the trouble for now?)

Quote: I went out & got this pic tonight
The babies / teens are in a small separate pen on the left right now they are almost 4 months old..The left side is 4 ft by 10 ft ? The middle door goes into the main run .which 4 ft by 10 ft next to the coop . The right door is the original coop (4 ft x 4 ft )..Now the hen house where they lay

The run widens past the coop to 6 x 8 ? We havent got the roosts finished yet .
Right now the 12 x 2x4 goes from one side of the coop to the other . The babies have 2 roosts in their side also

We put a roof over it all this summer ..dont have to worry about snow on the run anymore .
The babies free range out when the 1st flock does ...mostly the flocks stay separate from each other .
Our head Roo doesnt like the baby Roos & will peck or chase them if they get too close to his flock .

Here is Skiddy on the left ..he has more of a roo tail now & TT on the right
Heres the difference in size between the Samatra & the Americana & a bunny they found ( they are the same Age )

If I decide to keep a samatra pair They may have the small side of the Run / coop as their own ...
I have a blue Samatra roo too I could choose Sammy

1st year hens generally lay through the winter & dont molt ..
Mine are all on fermented feed ...they havent ever done a full moult even the older ones ..that were one year + laid through the winter ..
& didnt do a full moult . they may slow down ..they may lay less ..maybe every other day ..so if you have 8 hens you might get 4 eggs a day or more ..

Gramma Chick beautiful set up!!!

Mine are on fermented feed as well. Red is doing her first full molt now at 16 months of age with yellow just starting to moult. My older hens never did a juvie molt that I saw. A few feathers here and there but nothing like now. I agree they will probably slow down this winter but they might just keep going all winter since they slowed down the last couple weeks. I know 3 stopped laying for a couple weeks since all I got was one big girl egg & eggs from the 2 tots laying.

Good morning,

TOB ~ That is a beautiful shot of the hummingbird! We have a family of hummingbirds here, a mom, dad and baby. The baby used to come around and get nectar from one of the flowers I had planted on my porch, I think it was type of hibiscus although it reminded me of a rose of sharon. I forget what it was. But we do have the two feeders for them. And I swear when they are empty - the mother comes buzzing around looking for me, if I'm outside she'll find me, stop, look right at me and then buzz off. It's like she's saying "Hey you! My feeder is empty! Get on that!" LOL We didn't see them nearly as much this year as we did last year. Not sure why.

Gramma ~ I like your set up for you chickens! Very nice!

Glass ~ Congrats on the egg from one of your younger birds. My lavender silkies turned 20 weeks around the 14th of Aug, but I have a feeling I'll be waiting for them for a while.

Hi Breella,

Here is a little female Ruby-throated Hummingbird that I photographed this past week. She is a little terror and fiercely defends the nectar and flower garden at our cottage. She does not share well. But she IS lovely. Here in the northeast, we have Ruby-throated Hummingbirds -- the males have the red throat, females are more subtly colored but still very pretty.

TOB

I saw on a week ago. At first I thought it was a bee or large bug. It's was quite small. I would have needed binoculars to get a good look.

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!

Got told last evening that the house next door is going up for back taxes. $15,000. Not sure how true this is but it's on better than an acre of land. House needs lots of work, but might be worth the look.

I went to ongov.net and looked at surrounding properties and learned at least three, including the one next door are delinquent on their taxes.

One we've had our eye on just for the land to add to our lot. It's has a small shell of a one bedroom house on it but we'd just like the land.

At ongov.net you can see even an aerial view of properties. One near us showed even the mess in their yard. While older photos I understand from the neighbors it's still full of junk.

Now if your taxes are going up and you need info to grieve it, go to ongov.net and see what others are assessed at. This of course is only for NYS.

Even if you are looking to buy, you can go there and see what's what in your area.

I like our neighbors as they are quiet and not a pain. Not folks I'd get involved with but quiet and no trouble. If I had the money I'd buy it and tear the place down. Well I do have the money but don't want to mess with my retirement.
