NY chicken lover!!!!

Happy birthday to me... Came home to find Powder Puff in distress. She looked egg bound and was gasping for air and having contractions. I filled up a tub with water but she must have been too far gone an she died in my hands. No sign of an egg inside the prolapse. I have two new eggs today, so whatever color I don't get any more of will have probably been hers.

I am sorry about Powderpuff ..she is no longer in pain

Thank you, Princess! I will look. Sorry to be so late replying, but I spent two looong days at the Newfoundland Water Trials, and didn't check in on the computer. Saw lots of great dogs saving people and towing in boats, and making sure everyone had the right equipment at the right time.

Good Morning NY Chicken Peeps~
I need suggestions on how to stop a few of The Girls from adding a shot or two of POOP to their eggs everyday. I want to stop it before it gets worse!

Good morning! Had a lot of posts to catch up on. Tab, I'm glad you found your dog!! So sorry about powderpuff :( that's always one of my biggest fears. I had a hen die unexpectedly and it was terrible.

Just saw a coyote behind the coop...by the time we could grab the gun it was gone...ugh

Hope everyone enjoys their day!!

WOW. I saw sick hens last year while I was there. I can't believe they don't check the birds for illness before they let them in. That's one place you will never see my hens shown

Keep in mind folks that stress can bring on problems. With chickens not healthy to begin with problems are more likely to happen. As far as I can tell it's the same breeders every year who have a lot of chickens.

I am surprised by how many people I meet at TSC who don't know about BYC. That meaning there are a lot of chicken keepers out there who don't participate in forums. One lady was very indignant and said "I don't have a dot com or a computer". Not friendly at all. I said well we don't need unfriendly people like YOU anyhow! and walked away. (not really but I thought it).

My point being just make note of who brings their chickens to the fair and when you encounter them run for the hills. One person I used to know who showed lost a lot of birds one year. I do think this is a NYS thing too. I've a friend in AL and have been one of their shows and the birds were very nice.

Been raining and thundering here since late last night. We had quite the storm overnight, surprised the kids slept thru it. I'm hoping Lowes is open today, I'm sure they are since a lot of stores have Labor Day sales. I need some more hardware mesh. Thought I had a whole role of it in the shed but I must have used it on the cage I transformed from an IKEA dresser.

I'm actually surprised at the amount of people who don't know about BYC. Or maybe they do but they don't have the time to join and keep up with others? When you do any kind of google search on chickens the first 5 results are usually links to articles that bring you back here. LOL

Evening All,
I think I'm going to try to get to one of my apple trees in the back yard woods tomorrow. I may have to weedwack a path up there, just so I can get to the tree with the big green apples on it. I wanna check these things out and see how good/bad they taste. My son loves sour/tart things so if they're as tart as you all are saying they are, I may have a free apple supply for him!

Hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. No plans for us really. Did a bunch of yard work today, fixed a rabbit cage, altered another. I'm getting an English Angora rabbit tomorrow from a friend. Can't wait! Also just an FYI, I have another litter of holland lops if anyone is interested. They'll be ready the second week of October. PM if you'd be interested in one.

Tart apples are not problem if you mix them with some of the sweeter varieties. I personally don't use just one variety. I also season to taste. Last year there to were two bananas with spots that no one but me would have eaten. I just peeled them and tossed them in. No one noticed and they weren't wasted. Chickens don't eat bananas as far as I know. I'm sure I'm wrong but they get enough treats.

Anyhow I have a friend who prides herself on being a cook, but even she couldn't guess all the ingredients in my sauce. She got all but one. Honey.

As far as the Angora Rabbit is concerned. Grit has an article on fiber animals and it says you can "shear" an Angora rabbit every three months. Is that true? Is there a market for Angora Rabbit hair?
