NY chicken lover!!!!

okay it's been a while since I've been on been busy with school work umm the homestead my son, and helping my parents move into their new home. I skimmed a few pages and I hope everything is okay um I did notice that there were sick birds at the fair and brella I'm sorry for your loss.

I hope everything is going well with everyone .

my injured girl is doing very well she definitely has I miss my flock symptoms. but just due to type the injury it is it's probably going to be a long time before she can go back to her girls.

I went to the public market got lots of goodies been doing a lot of baking and canning and now I'm low on eggs hahaha go figure. at least my production layers are laying well.

Here are a few weeding my backyard for me.

Picked 2 heaping 8qt flats of peaches today at Indian Creek Farm. Some white flesh, which I never had before. Some regular yellow flesh, which are delish! Also picked a peck of Bartlett pears. Poor peach trees, a couple of the branches broke under the weight of the peaches. They have other branches propped up to keep those from breaking. Nice little place, lots of stuff to pick. Apples and raspberries were open too.

I read this is a good year for Peaches so better can lots cuz next year may not be.

I have recipes for Pear and Apple compote that is good over ice cream. Everyone loved it. Compotes by the way like Applesauce make a great side to a good meal. The one I mentioned has walnuts in it too.

If anyone is interested in a recipe and I have it I will type it up for you.

Yeah I've been canning peaches from my tree like crazy, going to do the apples as well. I would love the recipe thanks. I'm trying to keep all of our desserts homemade so I know what's in the especially real fruit.

Good Morning NY Chicken Peeps~
I need suggestions on how to stop a few of The Girls from adding a shot or two of POOP to their eggs everyday. I want to stop it before it gets worse!

This is to the outside of the egg I presume?

This is what the PP magazine has to say. Faeces on the egg could indicate a dietary problem.

Its doesn't say more than that, so I don't know what dietary problems they mean. Perhaps stuff that may lead to loose stools. Also you might want to check to see if anyone is sleeping in the nest boxes. Lately I've had to go in and pull all the young ones out and put them on the roost. They like to crowd on the fronts of the nest boxes and that means poop in them.

However here are some other tid bits.

"If your birds enjoy plenty of access to natural vegetation, or you feed them treats like wheat or freshly picked surplus from the vegetable patch, then calcium deficiency could lead to weak egg shells. "

" sometimes you may find blood spots on the egg. The two commonest causes of blood on the egg are tan over-sized egg and peck damage to the vent."

If you find many bloody eggs you might want to check vents at night. Backing off on the feed might help reduce the size of her eggs.

I agree with the peaches, our tree has never had good peaches on it but this year it's doing great. We also have lots of apples so it's time for some apple pies and crab apple jelly. YUM

All righty, I'm up to date. Sorry to hear about Powder Puff. Happy about the beagle!

On crabapples, lots of times there will be some crabapple trees purposely planted in the apple orchard because apples need to be cross pollinated, and only certain apples work with each variety. Crabapples are called the universal pollinator, cause they work with them all.

On the chickens at the fair, I saw lots of sick ones when I went on Tuesday. Chickens that had their eyes closed and swaying...but two years ago I saw one chicken that was being pecked to bloodiness. It was terribly upsetting and I looked for someone in charge to save her. I guess that the stress and possibility for disease transmitting make the idea of shows distasteful to me.

My land has old apple trees that are equally spaced, but most of the apples are the green type...the spacing tells me they were intentionally planted, but there are lots of different types of growth habit, don't have a clue what they are. Tall trees. I picked up a bunch of windfalls and made a little pie with them...it was well received, although since the apples had spots and bruises no one admired their beauty, and people told me they were wormy. I enjoy saying I found no worm while prepping them, and those still on the counter have no creepy crawlies near them. "Give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees..."

At the newf show a lady who brought her two labs to be tested for a WaterDog title kindly brought 36 jars of jelly/jam. She had unusual flavors, mine is apricot and sweet rose wine. I think she is from NJ, north west part.

I have one mutt hen I hatched 3.5 years ago who 6 days a week, every time she lays an egg there is a shot of poop on it. She is in a pen with 6 other hens and a rooster. She roosts every night. All eat the same food. None of the other hens do this and everyone lays like crazy. No one is sick. IF it were dietary all would have similar symptoms and there is simply no way with a diet issue that she would lay 6 days a week.
I see it as a glitch in the hens system. Really not a big deal. I have seen it since this girl was 6 months old and she is a perfectly healthy egg laying fool. If this is the only issue with your hens I simply would not go looking for trouble where it does not exist.

Welcome to the thread ...
You shouldnt have that problem on the new york thread ..Im sure most of us New yorkers have encountered that problem ..When we say we are from NY ...
People think we are from the big city . So where are you really ? I am in Jordan Ny that is considered Central NY too

how many roosters can you safely keep? As many as your head Roo will let you . mine attacks the 4 months Roo if they get too close .
One hard peck & they are out of his range ..
hi, thanks,, I would be in cooperstown (yup baseball town)--- my roo is a gentle giant but very dominate and I am waiting to see how many roo's I will have from my 7 week old babies-- I just want to be careful--winter is coming and they will be shut up in the coop a lot due to the snow and cold weather we have here.
