NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I think I read in the bible that unless you have a big feast and a bunch of drunken relatives it doesn't count.  Oh and I almost forgot there must be a brawl and the cops have to come too.    :lau

We got married by a JP and had a small party after with just family.  Then took off for Virginia.    37 years ago this month.

Congratulations and I wish you many many more years together.

Rancher

I've been to a couple of those kind of weddings. Always fun:D

well, I would not do deep litter again on my dirt floor. cleaning it out in the spring was just was too much for my husband and I to do. (18 foot x 6 foot) (part was duck and part was chicken)--its back breaking work -especially this spring with the extra rain and my coop flooded.( I gave my 20 year old son-in-law to 50 bucks to shovel it out) we have since dug out the inside of the coop from 6 to 16 inches down and put in drainage pipe and put gravel back in over it. we also did it in front of the coop dug it out 2 foot down and continued the drainage pipe. I am in the process of putting sand over the gravel in the coop for easy cleaning.(couple bags a week). It will also make it easier this year to put a heater under the water to keep it from freezing and not worry about something catching fire. we extended the back of our shed to make our coop.

sand will be easier to rake clean and put DE in..

One thought I've had for my runs that have of course dirt floors is to dump a bale of peat moss in. I use straw or hay on the floor of the runs as well as large chip shavings. Nobles has good sized wood chips and they aren't too badly priced. You could also of course use some top soil.

I believe I have an issue of Back yard poultry that has a good article on Deep Litter.

I am considering it for a new hoop coop and a hoop house for storage. I am moving all my mint plants to around the runs. Spearmint is great when you hit it with the mower or weed whacker and I read mint keeps the mice away. Pineapple mint is variegated and looks pretty. I'll post pics in the spring.

Featherz,

Congratulations on your anniversary. Enjoy the special day and many more happy years ahead.

Juanita-- If there only a few small rust spots in the pot I would scrub them and use it. If the whole inside is rusty I would replace it. Ace hardware carries them. The rack I would scrub and use.

I have free roosters:
8 week old and off lights: cuckoo frizzle OE, BLRW (blue or black), white OE, black orp, splash orp,

3 or 4 month old: Delaware, cochin buff brahma bantam cross, and splash orp

For Sale:
I have a 8 wk old a straight comb OE pullet, 3 or 4 month old splash BLRW pullet (not 100% sure on sex),3 or 4 month old del pullet, and a couple 1 1/2yr old BLRW hens
I forgot to mention that we are looking for a leghorn rooster if anyone has one.

I may have a mess of chicks soon to rehome if anyone's looking - have three broodies who have been hiding little nests of eggs from me and I do NOT need any more chickens. I'll let everyone know what comes out when they hatch. :p

Oh, and one little EE rooster, but he's too young to go out yet. :)

Today is my 20th wedding anniversary - married 20 years ago at the drive up wedding window in Vegas - don't let anyone tell you that you must have a big expensive wedding to make it work!! =)
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! Here's to many more.

It is official. My little boy has become a man.

My rooster started to crow today. He might have started a few days ago, but with working at the fair, I may have not heard him. I thought that I might have last week, but it was one of my hens squawking in the coop. I'm surprised how proud of him that I am. I really didn't want a rooster, but I've become attached. (I tried to video tape it but as soon as I got the camera out he stopped.) As long as he stays nice and minds his manners I'll keep him, but like I told him today if he turns into a prick..its to the grill with yah boy...

The pot only has a few rust spots in the bottom. So I'll give a good scrub using lots of elbow grease. Thanks

Sorry about Powder Puff, Breella

She was very pretty.

A question for you all with dirt floor coops - how does it work? What do you use for bedding with the dirt floor? I'm trying to determine what direction I want to go with this new coop.
I have a dirt floor in my Australorp coop ( 15 x 10 ). The chickens have the entire floor hard packed except for an area by the door. It's about 3x2, they keep it scratched up & fluffy for dust bathing. It's easy to clean, and the majority of the mess is under the roosts. Which is easy to clean because it mounds. Just take the shovel and scoop it up .

Happy anniversary! I may take a couple of chicks off your hands, as I have four stubborn broodies who will. not. break. I had them setting duck eggs, but I've had a round of quitters, and one too-small duckling that died within hours of hatching. Breeds don't matter (although I'm craving naked necks now!).

One of my idiot neighbors hates my birds, and whines about them occasionally, because he's a control freak and thinks everyone needs his permission to do anything with their land (until he pays my mortgage and taxes, NOPE). This is the jackass who called the town on me claiming that the run was filthy and unacceptably smelly, blah blah blah. I invited the inspector to take a look around - he ended up apologizing to me for bothering me (I said no worries - he's just doing his job) and, as far as I know, he told Neighbor Boy to back off. At any rate, the people across the road from me have acquired a rooster and, even, better, a flock of at least twenty guinea hens. The guineas are free-ranging, and come down through the woods to poke around on the road, including along the edge of his yard. I told Alan, "watch - I'll get blamed." Sure enough, Idiot asked him the other day if those were our birds. Alan said, "nope - they're guineas, and they belong to the people up on the hill, the ones with the rooster and the shooting range. These are young - wait until they're fully mature and screaming at things. They make roosters seem quiet. We thought about getting them, but they're just too loud for us." He then walked off, leaving the dope huffing and puffing.

Irritating roosters are delicious. I have a silver-laced Wyandotte cockerel who is a nasty little jerk. He's fajitas as soon as he starts crowing.
