These were all the big girls' eggs. I won't be hatching anymore Silkie eggs until my lavender pullet starts to lay. She was 20wks the week of Aug 14th. So I'm patiently waiting on her. ;-) I also have a frizzle from Ke5hde and will try to hatch eggs from her as soon as she starts to lay.

I found a wonderful home for the kitten someone dropped off last week and today, the remainder of my turkeys sold. Everyone that called and the gentleman that bought them complained over the price but paid it anyway. lol. They were well worth it and probably more. They were gorgeous. So now to start preparing for winter. It's been down in the 40's for the last few nights. Today I'm going out and check those crab apples before the deer get to them.

Breella - those chicks are so very cute. Congrats!

Glad to hea

Glad to hear everything is going well. It's been down in the 40s here at night also. I've been working on the coops to get them ready for winter as well. I enclosed the old run in plastic and its going to be storage for shavings, grass clippings etc so its closer to the hoop coop. Hopefully I can get their food in their also since my mom is chucking the firewood in the garage today for me so its dry all winter so space is tight in the garage. At least I got the electric netting wires thru plastic pipe outsode and in the garage so I don't have to worry about it getting snagged by firewood or critters anymore.

The sun is shining and I have a turkey cooking in the oven. The hens got the neck and other organ pieces and they are in heaven. Bet they will be happier tomorrow when they get the turkey carcass :D

As usual, I didn't get to do what I had planned to do today, but here is my dilema.

A friend gave me a large amount of pears & apples. I can't possible eat them all, so I would like to either can or freeze some.

I read somewhere how you could process apples with all the spices & sugar, and can them so they are ready to put inn a crust for pie.. Anyone have a recipe like that?

I would prefer to can to save freezer space though. And pears....jelly? can't think today....aarrgghhh.

I managed to acquire a ton of canning jars, so I'm eager to get canning...I also have a Food Saver for freezing and can suck the air out of canning jars as well....

So much to do, so little time....

,Armor...if they are like my hens the carcass will be gone quickly!

Beautiful day today so I got both silkie coops cleaned, disinfected, swept and prepped for winter. Eowin growled at me when I moved her and her eggs to clean but settled back down when I put her back in her nest box. Sarah (in the other coop) stood outside and bawked at me while I did that coop. She ran in as soon as I put the shavings down and showed her her eggs. Eowins eggs are due any day. Sarah in anotherfifteen days or so. More silkie babies! I am letting them do all the work. Have to get some pics of the three month ols as they are gorgeous. I plan to have some for sale come spring.

My heritage rir girls felt the need to follow me all over as I was working. They are funny that way. They don't want to be held or cuddled but do like to hang out wherever you are. Very social that way.

Dreading cleaning out the big coops. Dh will have to help with those as it is a big, heavy job. Loving these cooler temps. Had one of my mothers tomatos for lunch with fresh bread. Nothing like a big old tomato sandwich with mayo! Only hellmans...I don't do that salad dressing stuff and definately no off brand mayo either!

Time for a cup of tea. Ta for now.

applesauce and apple pie Yummm!

Plenty of apple peelings for chickens and horses making everyone happy.

Went to Beak and Skiff. Lots of changes but their prices are high $1.15 lb. and only one variety to pick.

So we took Darcy on the tractor ride and picked a couple of pounds of Jona macs there. Bought some cider. We like Beak and Skiff $5. 95 a gallon.

THEN we went to Oneils at the bottom of the hill. Apples 80 cents a lb. Three or four varieties to pick. No raspberries though. I was bummed. Picked more apples. MacIntosh, Zestars and Paula Reds.

The plan is to make sauce. I've got the jars in the washer now.

I think this will be a heavy snow winter.

Now please if there is anyone who wants more chickens let me know. I've got pullets too, not just roosters. I'll part with EE pullets if I have too.

Yes you can. I also have a pear/apple compote recipe that is very good and easy to make.

You can of course make a pear/apples sauce. You can also make up the apples juice for jelly and freeze it for finishing later. I have 5 cups of cranberry juice in the freezer waiting to be made into jelly now. I measure and freeze berries or what ever so I can just take it out and do up the jam.

I have Apple Chutney, Apple Earl Grey Almond jelly, Apple jelly, Apple sauce, Apple Butter, Apple cider & sage jelly, Apple Ginger Marmalade, Apple raisin and date chutney, Blackberry and apple conserve, canned Rhubarb and Apples, Pear jam, Rhubarb Pear & ginger jam, Spiced Pear Pickle, Apple Berry Jam, Apple lemon marmade, Apple orange apricot conserve, Blackberry Apples spread, Blue berry Apple butter, Ginger Pear lime jam, Honey Pear and Vanilla Bean jam, Peach Pear jam, Pear Jam and Brown Sugar and Cinnamon, Pear Maple Walnut conserve, Pear Port Jam, Plum Pear chutney, Rapsberry Pear Spread, Spiced Pear Butter, Strawberry Rhubarb and Pear conserve.

But no pie filling, but yes you can do up those apples and can pie filling. I just don't have a recipe.

My apples sauce recipe calls for spices that make it taste just like pie filling, but I also do just regular or cinnamon too.

If you have no Rhubarb you can find it frozen. Berries and Peaches at Aldi's.

And yes fall is a busy time. Winter is for resting.

Oh and peaches can be frozen for future use. When you thaw them the skins come right off.

Beak and Skiff and just minutes down the road from me! I've been wanting to go to their newest building now that they have stuff for kids to do.

I went to ONeils today too! Around 4:30 I felt the need to get some apples to make a pie. Didn't pick, was wishing I could get a few separate apples of the other types, cause I like the flavor of a mix of apples. The cashier asked if I wanted a bag of mixed apples with some of all three types! I was so happy. Usually they have raspberries for a while in September, until frost. I wonder what is different this year.

Does Beak and Skiff still have the ponies?
