NY chicken lover!!!!

Just got done at the vermont state fair. Lots of healthy birds here, mostly old English game bantams, all gorgeous. I know the guy that owns them and recently bought two pullets from him. They also had silkies and cochins and some spangled hamburgs. No dyed birds. All energetic and healthy. Still, I'll be bleaching my shoes when I get home, just in case.

What are your local ordinances?? Personally, I wouldn't put the hen-house right next to the house, but to each their own. Since it's on wheels, if the locals give you trouble, simply move the hens further away and what they can't see won't bother them - right?

There are no "Locals" here. LOL I live in the sticks, there are no laws here as far as I know. I was just more wondering if there is a reason why the towns that do state they have to be away from the house, state it? Like is it a health risk? I got the coop up on the tractor, I guess thats what I'll call it, and placed it up against the woods for now in the most level spot I could find. They are finally up off the ground and the coop should no longer make an ugly spot in the lawn.

I too still have chickens to go.

Marq is coming in a hour for the two BM youngsters. I still have the three frizzle youngsters to go. I also have an EE pullet too. Black but nice. Lord only knows what the three new chicks are. Hopefully pullets frizzled or not.

I may have to take them to the auction. I hate to make the drive as they don't bring even enough to cover the gas.

I tried to get some work done but didn't pay attention to the weather report so it's raining. I did manage to get supports up under the new clear plastic panels though.

and I've replaced the plastic on the back hoop coop. I spread it out a bit to the sides and planted mint under it. Hopefully some of it will take. Mints are very invasive so there are plenty of roots. I may live to regret it, but I'm old so how long can that be?

Where/When is the next auction? I'm thinking if I really want to move these silkies before winter that may be my last chance to do so, is bring them to an auction. Maybe my friend will want to come with me and try to sell some of her angora rabbits. She has some babies left that no one has contacted her for. All males and apparently no one wants males, just the females.

.....he had everything done except getting eggs LOL but I'm not too worry about that all the chickens were counted and locked up. The cats and dogs were all fed and taken care of. He got himself his dinner played hide and seek with friends and of course when I got home he had our pit mix sitting with him on the couch. Our neighbor even gave him some chicken magazines!! I tell ya when done right animals can really teach kids responsibility!

..... I love my boy even though he's scared of us he hides behind the girls at night when we check in on them but once you pick him up he calms down.

What a good, responsible fella to take care of himself and the chickens while you had to work late!

I have my ear listening for bad chicken sounds ..& I check every once in awhile & walk around our property
Or I just do stuff outside when they are out ..Weed wack..pull out weeds , Plant stuff , cultivate , Rake grass , collect dead wood , etc
You could also wash the car or vac out the car

Definitely - I do the same. When I'm out in the yard, I try to let the birds out for a change of pace and to hunt bugs, etc.....as long as my dogs are taking a break inside, that is. The Coronation Sussex (lead pullet of the younger trio) has figured out that I know where the tasty clover is. I was bending over to pick up something yesterday, and she came cooking over thinking I had pulled up some clover for her.

That is so cool glad to hear. It was the state fair was my first show and I was sadly disappointed.

I've seen plenty of people who do it, as long as you keep things clean I don't believe there should be a problem. Typically people with weakened immune systems should typically stay away from most animals, reptiles and birds and exotics being top on the list.

In my city yeah no birds near the house at least 20 feet back. I keep my large coop 70 feet back and my silkies coop 50 feet back, but my injured girl I keep right on my deck by the back door so I can hear her and keep an eye on her and when it's cold all sick birds come inside. The cops are pretty cool I passed inspection so all is good, and yes the cops do the inspection not animal control.

Speaking of the sick or injured is it going to be getting cold? Should I bring my girl in? She is doing well by the way just lonely.

Ok, thats more of what I was looking for. This coop is cleaned out more than the other because they are the silkies and well, I can't stand of course when they start to get dirty, which is one of the reasons I wanted them up and off the ground. They should stay much cleaner now that they have more of a "coop" bottom in their run covered with shavings than the dirt covered with shavings.

Where I live the regulations state the coop has to be 10 ft from my property line and 25' from neighbors house and can't be in the front yard. Now I lucked out because my lot is an acre and my house is sort of in the front corner of the acre though the front of my house is about 40 ft from the road. That gives me most of my back yard and a whole side yard to range my girls. Nothing in the rules says how far my electric netting has to be from the property line but my neighbors don't mind the hens so its all good. Of course it also says only 6 hens.......hope they don't stop by to count lol
No regulations on how far it has to be from my house, I don't think they care about that since their yours. More about the cranky neighbors some people have who don't like the smell? Tho I use deep litter method and there is no smell......heck my garbage tote is the worse smelling thing in my yard after I clean up after the dogs & clean litter boxes the hens don't even smell that bad after a year of DL
