NY chicken lover!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think about fencing it off. I think that I could get some of the plastic snow fence to just string around there. It doesn't need to be to sturdy since it is in the main run, just enough to keep the chicks/ducks off the area. The only problems is that there is a tree there and it tends to be shady so I'll have to get some grass seed that is for shady areas. But that is a great idea. I also thought of the wood chip stuff. The town used to dump it just down the street from us. I went and got a load for the dog yard. I wish that I could get to it now, but the town dumped all the debris there from after the flooding and the area is all filled up to the road. Maybe I'll ask the neighbor that does logging. They have a wood chipper and I could get some from them I 'm pretty sure If I offer them a case of beer that the would even deliver it. I think that I might try the grass seed first, then if that doesn't work I'll call the neighbors. The only thing now is I have to wait till this darn rain stops. I need to get the coop cleaned out and do some yard work, but it is so hard when it is so rainy.

Home late.

Dumb hen is out in the woods somewhere. Took off just after dusk and later I saw her on the log near the coop but couldn't catch her. She took off like a shot so she's out there til the am. Her and her sister are not friendly and take off for the woods at the sight of me.

I had nabbed them both one night to move them to another coop. Now they run like crazy.

Tab You can't bounce baby out so please be careful. You are right with school and being part time now at Madison County Office for the Aging I am busy plus Hubby is still home since his surgery doesn't go back to work until after 9-20 and he has been in a building mood plus it has been kinda nice to spend some time alone with him while the boys are in school.

My classes are night classes this semester everyone else hates picking them up I like it am more of a night owl. Madison County OFA is great and I love it and it is only 2 days a week so it is not bad. As soon as hubby goes back to work I will get into my routine and have plenty of time.

Ok did you ever hear the saying be careful what you wish for well Rancher my hens caught your hen's Broody Hen Disease LOL! I have 3 Orpingtons sitting on eggs, my lavender Silkie is sitting on eggs, and 1 more of my orpingtons I think is going to be going broody. Hubby bought me the most adorable pigs they are Hereford Pigs and their coloring is like the Hereford cows Good thing when they get bigger they are no longer cute little piglets they become stinky noisey walking Ham otherwise I might have a problem with butchering them.

Unfortunately with it being the early stage of back to school I have caught some type of crud Tummy Bug been running a fever last night and tonight it is 104.1 after Motrin which of course I am freezing and have pellet stove going along with furnace cranking of course everyone else is getting roasted out but Oh well they will have to deal with it. Ok am going to get off and try some Tylenol too .

Ok, so Duane did start crowing at 5:50 this AM. HOWEVER it was not very loud with him inside the coop, and I found the cause! My lighting system in the coop is on a timer, and the timer seems to have been turning on in the early morning (which may have been ok for summer but sunrise isn't until almost 7am now.) I have turned the light timer back until 7:30-7:45am and Duane shut up.

So, now on my personal to do list is to expand the coop to cover the whole shed. By doing this I can provide more indoor safe space for them. I can make an area for food and water inside which I REALLY did not want to do, but will do since I don't want them going without water in the AMs when I can't get out there at 8 to let them out.

It's going to be a fun fall!

I have a young pullet out in the woods somewhere who got out of the electric fence about a week ago.I assumed she was a goner, but just saw her yesterday shuffling around. I am going to try to flush her out of the woods today IF I can find her again. Fun with ticks!

Dear Neighbors,

I'm Bonnie, your neighbor with the chickens and most importantly the rooster. Recently it has come to my attention that there are some complaints about Duane crowing early in the morning. I was unaware of the extent of the distress he seems to be causing someone (or someones) in the area with his noise. I work both during the day and overnight a few days a week and sometimes I am not home at the time the offense seems to be taking place. The officer who came to the house the other day has actually not disclosed to me which of our neighbors have made the complaint so I have chosen to send a blanket letter to everyone around us.

I am allowed to keep chickens, even roosters. My rooster is even allowed to crow but we all live here and there is no cause for me to be unreasonable. This week after I was made aware of the complaint I took some steps to help stop the early morning wake up calls. I want to manage the problem rather than just kill Duane, which has been suggested by the officer for me to do. I have changed my coop door from always open to closed at night, this stops the chickens from coming out in the morning until I let them out. I purchased a baby monitor so I could better hear the noise in the coop overnight on the nights I have been home this week. There was some 6am crowing but I realized that was connected to the time that the coop lights on the automatic timer went on. I have since pushed the timer back to 8am. It may take Duane and the girls a few days to get on the new later schedule.

I am in the beginning stages of starting a small farm agriculture business and having at least one rooster is important to keeping my hens happy and safe. Roosters have a number of benefits to a backyard flock of chickens: Roosters alert the hens to predators (we have a fair number of hawks around here) and will even fight them off or sacrifice themselves to save members of their flock. Roosters “keep the peace” among the hens by sorting out fights that happen between them. Roosters also prevent the girls from wandering too far and even round them up and make sure they are in the coop at sundown.

Chapter 86 of the town laws: “The Town Board finds that problems concerning the disturbance of peace, quiet and tranquility by noise from various sources and activities are best resolved by thoughtful discussions and cooperative agreements between affected parties.” While Agriculture noise is part of the exemptions to Chapter 86, I am willing to work with you and make reasonable accommodations. I can not guarantee that he will never crow overnight or in the early AM, but I am going to do what I can to have it not happen before 7:30am-8:00am. If you have any further concerns about my chickens please feel free to contact me. I may be at work but will return your call soon as I can.

What do you all think? I am going to give this to the neighbors.

Well - that is a very nice letter ! It will work on maybe 25% of people - the few who really may have been bothered by the crow.

It won't work on he city fool who moved - but wants every convenience of the city ... it also won't work on those who are solely concerned with themselves.

My younger self would have sent it - so I think you should. Now I say F everybody, because I have been stomped on so many times and my compromises and things like you have just done have never been appreciated or reciprocated when I was on the other side. I say this not to be depressing ! :) but to make sure you don't get too hopeful that the complainer will act rationally.

I think anyone who won't get dirt or poop on their hands should be barred from moving to the country - reason ? Live in a fantasy world so are not fit to live in the real world.

Keep me posted - I'd love to hear that this heartfelt letter worked !!

I really like this. I really think whoever is making the complaints should come forward and say it to your face. I know with my neighbors we asked the closest ones to us if they could hear the crowing and if it bothered them. They said no but we offered them eggs for free whenever they need them and told them if it ever gets too annoying to let us know and we could figure something out. We have 2 other neighbors who can apparently hear our roosters but in my opinion it really can't be that loud. We also offered them eggs and told them to let us know if it ever gets too annoying. I think what you're doing it making it a little bit more personal. It's easy to make complaints but the fact that you're being so reasonable about it and willing to work with them to solve the problem will hopefully help...
