NY chicken lover!!!!

I have 2 of these lights out back that I got from Home Depot this spring for $20 each. I love them and will definitely be getting more. They are very sensitive. My chickens set them off as do cats and my chihuaha. The only thing I don't like is they don't stay on as long as I would like.

I like having lights out back in the runs and having the yard lit up some. I did turn off the light in the back hoop coop cuz I think it's keeping them up.

Is there a way for you to section it off so the chickens/ducks can't get to it for a couple of weeks? Anytime I've moved a coop it leaves a bare spot in the lawn. I have a round pen that I bought for the rabbits last summer that I use when repatching those spots by planting grass seed. I buy that Scott's EZ Seed and just sprinkle it down and it's amazing how fast it grows in and covers the spot. I have a big square blow up pool in the backyard all summer and when I took it down I sectioned off that square, sprinkled the EZ Seed over it and it grew in within 2 weeks. Although having the area in a sunny spot helps too. But I would at least try to grow some grass before anything else if you can section it off some how so the chickens cant get in there.

What I like to do is make a circle of fencing and place it in areas that need to grow back. White clover and quick grass seed do help. I realize the quick grass seed is annual but it helps til the perennial grass can grow in.

I am so sick of this nasty wet weather! The yard is turning into a mud pit. I didn't let the birds out today until this afternoon. I'm sure its going to rain again later. Ugh, its just miserable to try to do anything in the yard in this mess. And it doesn't help that any extra water from mountain runs down and into our yard as well.

I finished cleaning up the silkie coop a little bit ago. I removed all the wet shavings out of the bottom run yesterday before it began to pour again. Decided to wait until today to put new dry shavings in there because I didn't want the same thing happening again. I kept them locked up in the coop part by placing a nest box divider in front of the open door to the coop that allows them down into the run because I didn't want them making a mess of the floor down there. I don't think they enjoyed that too much. Owell, at least they were dry this morning.

Someone has 3 beautiful BR roosters on CL - are those yours Rancher?? I wish I could get a BR roo to go with my BR hen but I dont think that would go over very well with Gru. They are very nice looking though.

No not mine I'll have to have a look see. Mine seems to be doing better. Yogurt and pellets again today. Will be cleaning the whole coop, dust everyone and everywhere, so stay out of the coop unless you want to get dusted.

Bad hair day.

I loved mine too. She was done laying, just hanging out for the rest of her life. I was so mad at the dog for cutting her retirement short.

It's always a nice surprise when we get an egg from them. They're around 3yrs now, so they're just eye candy now.
Sorry you lost yours. We've been lucky, our neighbors have 3 dogs and so do we but none of them bother with the chickens.

Still raining...wondering if my son will have his first soccer game tomorrow morning. Haven't even gotten a call yet as to when practice is.

So I don't even know if really even has a "first game" or not yet tomorrow. Guess we'll have to drive over there and find out for ourselves.

A phone call would have been nice.

Well since it was in the 90's earlier this week I decided to move the chicks outside to the brooder. Well that was dumb because not its freezing out there! So I moved the brooder box to the side porch today while it stopped raining for a minute, hooked up the heat lamp, placed it inside the brooder and they are good to go! At least they're nice and toasty in there now. I am really excited about this Orp mix chick. It's feathering out sooo nicely. Still unsure of the color, looks almost like a charcoal color. And the silkie chick is feathering out really dark. I'm wondering if it really is a black silkie and not a dark blue. I'll have to hold it next to the other blue chick I have and see if I can tell a difference.

Well I'm freezing and almost tempted to turn on the electric fireplace to get some heat in here.....

Evening all. Nice and cooltonight. The cheeps are happier with the cooler weather. Momma and babies are doing well. Candled Sarah eggs and they look good. Have a good evening all.
