NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone,
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

Glass ~ I think it's great that you want to voice your thoughts on the conditions of the poultry at the fair. I can tell you I for one, who had never been and was looking forward to it very much so, was very disappointed. I had plans to go back a second time with my friend JUST to view the birds/rabbits and I didn't just because of how unimpressed I was the first (and only) time I had gone. On thing that really bothers me about the set up of these livestock buildings is how the animals are "housed" there. I understand that the wire caging is probably the easiest and cheapest route to go but I just don't like the idea that birds aren't really "separated" from the rest. It's like, they might as well be all housed together on large pen. I don't like the fact that one bird is surrounded by three others and can get pecked by all three. No birds should even have the ability to touch another bird! IDK what other type of way they could set up but I just don't like to see birds that closely together like that.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the idea of creating some sort of "pen/run" up in the corner of my yard to keep the chickens in instead of letting them free range every single day. I'm just getting so sick of their messes everywhere. It's so gross and really starting to get on my nerves. Especially when their droppings are right in front of my porch steps or even worse ON my porch! :sick  I know they won't be happy with it but I need to do something. And it's not like they won't ever be allowed out, but I'd like to cut the free ranging down to just one day a week or maybe just on weekends. The ducks will still be let out so they can get to their pond, and besides their messes are NOTHING compared to the chickens. Not sure if I'll get around to it before winter or not. Still contemplating how I can make it a large enough area without having it be permanent. It would need to be something that can easily be taken down if that day ever came again and we had to move.

Electric net fencing.  Premier has it for about $175 and ships for free. Its around 150 ft long. I use it for a couple of my pens so they can get outside. We move it to mow, and store it rolled up for the winter.  Even if you don't electrify it, it works to keep them in.

X2. I love love mine !!!!! And yes they stayed in without being electrified but the dogs got used to it and I needed to electrify if to keep the fox & coyotes out as well. Very ease to move yourself. Mine will stay up to the first snow. And it's easy enough to move them over the yard so they have new places to go. I have 2 rolls and love it. Might splurge on a 3rd next year. It can also be ran on solar power. I will def be getting the solar panel next spring.

Well if this cop doesn't have a personal interest in the case I am not sure who would.

He came over today, it's going to court. After making suggestions last week about trying to work on the noise (keeping them in later, keeping it darker in the coop until they go out) he has flat out told me that since I "wasn't willing" to give Duane to be Bruilette family that I am going to court. Now they are saying that the noise isn't just at night, they are saying the noise he makes during the DAY is in violation of some law. He says that no less than four of my neighbors have complained about the noise both at night and during the day (the during the day thing is new for me).

I'm frustrated, I'm upset, I don't understand what the heck is going on. Duane is not an overly loud rooster. I have spent time and money this week being awake at insane hours to be sure he wasn't crowing overnight. I bought the baby monitor so I can hear them at night. I don't know what to do. If I give in and give up Duane what is there to stop them from telling any of you who live in my town that you can't have your roosters? What about the next people that get into chickens?

Is it his word that it is going to court? Did he serve you with papers? I would go to your zoning person & talk to them. If you are truly RA it doesn't matter if he crows all day long...
Ask them if people mowing their lawn noise is ok, or leaf blowing, or snow blowing or tooting a horn? Tell him that you will protest when you hear those noises the neighbors make. It does sound like someone is trying to make you comply and possibly trying to get the zoning changed to residential.

And besides, no one can tell you who to give anything to .. Why the push for the Brouillettes? Its crazy.

Thanks Rancher I did build a door very simple I'll post more pics later. It was a lot easier than I thought and I used less wood so I should be able to go nuts with the silkies tractor coop.

I have built more than one door, simply for the reason a purchased screen door is to big. Taller folks of course need a bigger door than my six foot high runs. If you notice most older chicken coops were built high in front and low in back. Sometimes barely 5' high. Here where I live there are still a few antique chicken coops.

My new neighbor has a coop sitting in the back but I've not seen nor heard any chickens. On the way to see my DD, I saw two hens on Taft Rd. and a few chickens and geese on Rt. 31. These were near the road. I have no idea why.

Thanks!! I'm definitely going to look into getting some of this. Man, good thing I brought it up, I would have tried putting something together with chicken wire! And that would have been a huge PIA!

This stuff looks easy peasy and I don't need it to be electrified so I don't even have to worry about that part of it all.

I have chicken runs for when I'm not home and winter time too. When I'm home they are out but when I'm away they still have some fresh air and exercise room. So build that run and rest easier when you are away. Yes, I'm aware things can happen but at least reduce the risk by keeping them in a run when you're not home. IMO

These are things you need to stress when you go to court. This guy has an agenda, plain and simple. If you've spoken with your neighbors and they are okay with things then why not write a simple note and have them sign it.

"I the undersigned have spoken with Ms. .................... and have no problem with her keeping chickens.

You can of course call the court and find out how to file a harassment complaint against officer unfriendly too.

Also make sure that anyone he has documented complaining actually LIVES in your area. My guess he hasn't. There has to be ON RECORD a list of complaints and it has to be PUBLIC record.

If you have all your paperwork you should have no worries. Keep copies of everything. You have the law on your side.

They've been free ranging since last summer and knock on wood I haven't had anything too tragic happen yet. I really just want a neater yard. I'm tired of having to change shoes every time come home from the store and then walk out into the yard, tired of telling the kids to not wear they're good shoes in the yard, spraying off the crocs every day, etc. And like I mentioned earlier, I can't stand the messes near and on my deck. Absolutely hate that I cannot run out to my car to get my purse or something that the kids left in there and having to dodge the chicken droppings everywhere! And I only have 4 chickens free ranging!!! LOL

Breella this just sounds shady to me too. He's going through an awful lot of trouble t get you to give Duane to someone that he has specified.

Finally got rid of the last of my extra birds yesterday and picked up a new barnevelder roo. We "should" have the last of the silkies hatch this weekend too.

Ditto,

The Broulettes actually show at the fair. They are well known in chicken circles. SHE is or was a member of BYC. Karen is her first name.

Greetings Everyone!

I wanted to pass on some new information regarding USPS's shipping of live adult birds... and honestly, I'm do not know how to start a new thread, or if it is even necessary... could post this on the various state threads... word will get around

USPS has revised regulations on shipping of live Adult Birds. According to Domestic Mail Manual 601.9.3.4

The list of disease-free adult birds that could previously be shipped domestically only included adult Chickens, Turkey's, Guinea Fowl, Doves, Pigeons, Pheasants, Partridges, Quail, Ducks, Geese and Swans.

Under the revised rule, USPS will allow the shipment of ANY disease-free live adult birds weighing up to 25 pounds.

The mailer and the mailing must comply with all applicable government laws and regulations.

Hi Cheeka!
The old list had everything I can imagine wanting, but your news would probably be important to far flung people, so maybe a new thread would be good. I see below the last entry on this thread two buttons. One is post a reply, the other is start a new thread. Give it a whirl, people in Nevada and Minnesota will thank you. But I'm glad we heard it first here.
