My nest box carpet is a calming blue gray low pile with strong backing, but in my heart I want oriental. (blush).

As for the bees, it was recommended to make room for native plants in the landscape, as the asters and goldenrod etc are, so you two are leading the bee revival ! I have lots of wild stuff on my land, and am loving it. Made jam twice with my wild grapes...usually just see vines no fruit, have to brushog some of the goldenrod because there is so much those with allergies were avoiding my place.

I don't understand why the government pays farmers to not grow corn or wheat for the land bank, I had a much older cousin who was part of that, but he never had any intention of growing those crops. It was just an early hobby farm. Why don't they instead reward farmers for farming without toxins ? Those are the folks who can use the extra money, and it is hard exacting work that you have to be really vigilant to produce the fine quality marketable crops.

I can't find the link I saw a while back, however I know they are federally protected. It is unlawful to shoot or "harass" them and the fine is something like $500 ?
Right now the ECO's are out watching hunters...I personally like to go outside, dance and sing for the Hawk, but they don't seem to appreciate it

Well I maybe a dead man walking when I get home from work tonight. I desided i'm going to ferment some chick starter and ultra kibble with some brown sugar. Only a few problems.

1. wife don't know yet.
2. what started out with one bowl became 3 bowls.
3. have to make new feeders which wife aint going to like me doing I already have enough to do lol.

So if you don't hear from me in the next few days I may be dead.

I think I need a pole barn built here soon with hatching chicks fermenting feed and getting more chickens I don't think the house can hold much more.

Willing to trade eggs for a year for a pole barn lol.

The Land Bank program hasn't been around in years, at least in the last 10 years that I have been with the Agency. We should be getting a new farm bill (maybe) which will overhaul the current crop subsidy program that many of our old farmers still think of as Set Aside or Land Bank. One of the programs I do work with is water quality and wildlife based, which takes highly erodible active cropland or pastureland that adjoins a water body out of production and restores an acceptable cover of grasses, shrubs, forbs and trees. One of the more recent covers accepted is a mix of wildflowers that bloom in several intervals for Pollinator Habitat.
Our sister agency does have a signup with cost-share to help offset the cost of Organic conversion, but the higher input costs and lower quantity of feed is not for everyone. And there are several farmers that want nothing to do with the government.
And I'm not supposed to be talking about work. Maybe later this week? lol

You can ferment with just water & unpastuerized ACV with mother & whatever feed you want. Takes about 3 days to ferment but you can feed them just wet feed. Its starts fermenting quicker if you keep it in a warm area. During the winter Iput mine next to the wood stove after I add more feed & water. You only have ACV with mother when you start then just water & more food.

I use drywall troughs to feed mine. Or glass bowls. Whatever is close on hand. Just don't use metal it will corrode. I know some who use gutters (i believe galvanized is ok) to feed their large flocks.

You might want to tell your wife that fermenting the feed will cut down on feed costs

& their coops wont smell either. I use deep litter and there is no poop smell at all.

I did post it once. I just googled it and found the federal link to it. The fine is more like $25,000. Not a measly $500.

I make mine thicker like cookie dough so I don't need to drain it. Usually the BOSS floats at the top.
I only have 8 hens but 50# of feed lasted me over 4+ months. I know others that have larger flocks say it cut their costs/feed in half.

I was curious if it got shocked. I know their feet don't when on power tension lines but I wonder of net would be different? His wings touched it as well. Hopefully he did and wont come back. Wishful thinking esp since he has been around longer than I have had chickens and I know there is more than one
