NY chicken lover!!!!

I love my silkies but hubby says they look like alien llamas.

My little girl sometimes crawls into my lap and likes to see the chicken pictures as I'm catching up on BYC. When we come across a Silkie pic, she laughs and calls it a silly fuzzy chicken.
And then she asks to see more little chick pics, then wants to watch the hatching videos.

Gramma the only frogs we see are the ones my chickens catch and eat. Gets a bit grizzly in our yard. Our silkie eggs are sround 1 5/8 oz to 1 3/4 oz. Hmmm wish i knew why yhey buried them.

Country Boy they are beautiful

Miquwid, sure we can meet up. We'll probably be there early since it's a Sunday.
Stony, tasty stuff.
Cracrzy4chicks, is the BLRW single combed? I might take one if they are.

Saw a great TED talk on why bees are dying. It was very powerful, pesticides, monocultures, flowerless landscapes...organic mixed vegetation lots of flowers will help.

TOB ~ Congrats on your newest egg layer! You're neighbor must have felt quite special to see that egg before you.

County Boy - Those leaves sure are good camouflage for those cheeps!

Apparently Hunting Season has started...been seeing many cars parked alongside the road here. I have no problem with hunting, but please just stay clear of my property! I get so nervous hearing gun shots so close and I am totally new to living in this type of area. Just makes me nervous. I saw some guy leaving his vehicle the other day on my way to bringing my son to school. He parked right next to this person's house so I'm assuming he knows them. It's when I see random cars parked close to my property that I get nervous.

At least I haven't had to slam on my brakes for any deer in the last few days!

Thanks, Lynzi. It just figures she laid her 1st one when we went away for the weekend. Still waiting to see if today's (or the next) egg is cracked or poked.

With regard to your property line and hunters -- make sure you clearly and liberally hang POSTED signs indicating that there is no hunting / no trespassing on your land. I make my own and laminate them, and on the signs I mention that we have "kids and pets at play." We only have around 5 acres, but it's sitting along edges of forest and field. Last year, we had some jerk clearly ignore the signs and we captured his image crossing in front of our game camera twice. In the pic you could see his camo clothes and the bow and arrows. But no face, as the camera was aimed lower for wildlife. Grrrrr! It is a little disconcerting when I can look out my kitchen window and see someone in a tree stand facing my house in my neighbor's field.

I don't know if this is of any significance, but I definitely noticed an INCREASE in the amount of honeybees this year. We have a lot of wild rose, goldenrod, daisies, clover and thistle on my back acreage, and I am always keen on keeping these wildflowers (weeds!) free to grow whenever possible.

What there was definitely a DECREASE in this year were certain butterflies: Monarchs and Viceroys chiefly, as per my observations.

I just missed a deer ... coming home tonight !
Does anyone see more frogs , etc this year ?
this toad I totally stepped on ...before he hid in my flower pot ( he made a dead squeaky toy noise)

Little tree frogs have been invading our house ..this week...I havent seen them in years

Last night when I was working in the basement I found this newt ..I had the Bilco (outside cellar door) open for a few hours in the eve ..as I was taking stuff out
Must have came down the cellar stairs ...and snuck in the door when I had it open ..

Hi Gramma,

I found a salamander next to the chicken pen door a couple of weeks ago and promptly moved it to a place where it would have less a chance of being pecked and gobbled up. We have a few resident frogs in our little bird "pond" (a buried plastic tub with plants around it). Every fall, they die because they think they can bury themselves into the bottom, but it's not mud -- just plastic. I want to try to relocate them before the deep frosts hit this year. Last spring it was gross cleaning out bloated dead froggy corpses from the pond water.
