NY chicken lover!!!!

ha ha ha love the colored peeps !

Brella - thanks ! I am writing some Roman Republic historical novel (not trashy gladitar stuff - but real heroism stuff) and this will help me to set the scene for one of my warriors. :)

All my guys are in the hoop coop for the winter now ! I feel it is racoon and fox proof now - but still think if a weasel came around it could pull and pick at the seams and get in.

Any ideas of smells or things that repel weaslly little things ?

I'd suggest you fix those seams. However as for smelly things? I could get you some of my son in laws dirty socks. I am not kidding. They stink so bad I swear they could peel paint.

Seriously, I'd do some research into weasels and see what types of things might work. In spite of the fox attack I'm still marking my territory. Can't hurt and might help.

I've decided to set up a couple of scare crows too. One I might set up with a mask, taping red cellophane over the eyes and use a solar light inside, putting the solar panel toward the sun so it lights up at night. I'll post pics when its done.

About the hoop i like to use hardware cloth over the cattle panels, expensive but worth it and it will last. I also like to dig down about about 8 -12 inches and use hardware clothe and heavy rocks for diggers. I love hardware cloth!

I got leaves everywhere for the chickens they love it.

Still have a headache from yesturday. Off to work

I too use hardware cloth over the cattle panels. I also bring it and/or chicken wire down and bend it out two feet. Now one thing you can do is use a pricker type plant to plant around the coop. Some ground cover roses would look nice. I have a red variety here. It only blooms once but still looks nice.

You could also plant berries along the coop too or lay dried canes along the coop too. My birds don't bother the edges of the coop. I've also planted mints around it.

I know , I know there are exceptions and some animal might break the barrier but it will also deter some as well.

Yeah, live and learn about building and overlapping the seams. :)

I "mark" my place too - my husband thinks I am mad and a savage. ha ha ha

Metella, maybe you could use some narrow pieces of hardware cloth to overlap the seams, then secure it to each side. It could make it more secure and give you some peace of mind. I have a strange assortment of old fence pieces that have been repurposed several times. I use wire to weave them together or secure them to supports. I wear gloves and carry pliers to bend it. But it is pretty durable. Probably more so than the fence pieces at this point. Right now both plastic and various metal fences are protecting the apple trees I planted a year and a half ago. The deer might go right over them, but maybe not.
