NY chicken lover!!!!

I am not sure I could kill and eat one of my own chickens. I know, dumb....but it would be difficult for me, to say the least. Stepping up several rungs on the "Could You Do It?" ladder, I just read an article in Cottage Life about a hiker from Quebec who sacrificed and ate his own dog to save his life (after being stranded in the wilds of Quebec for months due to a bear attack). They just rescued this guy. He was near death and will reportedly be on I.V. for weeks, but eating the dog probably saved his life. Crazy stuff happens...!

On a lighter topic....!!.....one of my younger birds has started laying! Not sure if it's the Lavender Orp or the Coronation Sussex. It's def not the Brabanter. Both the LO and the CS have red combs/wattles, so your guess is as good as mine. I don't have a nest box in the temporary-that's-not-so-temporary kennel cage for the younger girls. I found the egg in the bedding. I'm going to have to figure something out as long as these birds are still separated from the biggies. So 3 of my 7 are laying! Hooray!

Then why not do the processing with someone else and trade. Then you'd be eating someone else's.

If I were starving and had a chance to live/ be rescued - I couldn't kill my dog or husband, I would die with them .... BUT if they died before me .... I may be able to eat either of them.

In the reverse situation - as long as I wasn't hastened along - I give them permission to munch on me if I go first.

Well now I was told about these people who wanted to be spies. Two men and a woman.

So they took them and told them they were going to be given a gun, sent into a room and they were to kill the person in the room.

The first guy went in and there was his wife. After a long time he came out in tears and said he just couldn't do it.

The second guy goes in and there is his wife. After some time he too came out and said he couldn't do it.

Then the woman goes in and there is her husband. They hear six shots, a lot of screaming, yelling and the sound of metal banging. After that silence. The woman comes out all disheveled and sweaty and says. The gun was full of blanks so I had to beat him to death with a chair.

Gramma ~ Keep those ticks far far away!!! YUCK! I hate ticks! We were quite lucky this summer with not seeing many. The dog picks them up from time to time but not daily. The chickens must be doing a good job out there.

Just got done altering my chicken coop into a duck house. Took out the nest box, screwed the top flap down onto the side and placed hardware mesh on the 2-3 inch gap that it didn't cover. That actually worked out quite well because I don't think this coop has enough ventilation as it is, so now there is a screen there at the top I won't have to worry too much about humidity and moisture build up in the coop over the winter. I also moved the coop down next to the house to the side of my porch so when it DOES start to snow I don't have to shovel a path from the house up to the coop. I can just step outside and open the door to let them out.

Do you plan on ever moving them all in together? I forget if you said why they are still separated...

My blue Orp chick is making friends with the frizzles while they are out free ranging. That makes me happy that the two aren't off by themselves. The blue chick has also began going into the coop at night with the others rather than waiting for me to chase her in there.

Hi Lynzi,

It's because of the Brabanter who has partial blindness and gets hammered whenever I try to mix them. She can't see the aggressors coming and they are almost twice her size. She'd be toast, and I've consulted with Marquisella about this, who agrees. This bird is unbelievably sweet and I'm not comfortable with just letting flock dynamics take its course at her expense. So while I've got Gertie, I've got to keep her separated. And since the other two came with her and get along great together, I just keep the trio separated. I could add the Sussex and Orp into the flock, but that would leave Gertie alone.

I'm glad your chick is making some poultry pals who are showing it the ropes!

GRAMMA -

This has been the worst tick year I've ever seen. I have pulled more ticks off my dogs this year than I have in past years combined. Some were embedded already, and others were just crawling on their fur in hopes of finding the gravy train. I have also found 4 or 5 crawling on ME this past summer at our cottage in Canada, where they are also out of control bad this year. Last year I had a deer tick bite me and attach (I think I told you this already) but luckily this year, none got that far! They are so disgusting!!

The ones in your pic look like regular dog ticks (not deer ticks) but I am not 100% sure.

Ohhh OK, I remember all this now. I forgot about that Brabanter having the blindness issue. That stinks that they can't seem to get along. Especially after all that work you put into making that large coop, but it sounds like you've mastered a way to keep them separated but still "together".

Thanks for the refresher.

Just when I thought everyone was going to give me problems going into the coop in it's new location, they all made it in. Or at least I thought. I couldn't believe how long they waited to go into it. It was pretty dark out there and they were still wandering around at the top of the hill. So I went out there when I thought they were all in, brought my flashlight out there, shined it in the coop to count and I didn't see my son's BO Golden Star. Shined the flashlight around in the yard and finally found her....

Apparently she didn't like my idea of moving the coop.

fussy baby

UGH I hope she settles down soon. If its any consolation I have a fussy 10yr old and a fussy co-work who gave me stress headache today.

Sure I do , Mars.

Your a trip

Gramma ugh that sucks I've been finding a lot at work on dogs on a daily basis.

TOB congrats on the new layer!

KE5 good luck with the hatch!

I have one new layer and maybe another hard to say the but 80% sure. My leghorn is swatting, her comb and wattles are large but I suspect they will get much larger and redder before she actually lays. My was suppose to be leghorn now unkown is getting large and heavy still not sure what she is miss took her for my one of my hybrids because both have tiny pea combs and hardly any wattles. Weird because my other hybrids have large almost floppy combs and decent size wattles. My Faverolle I think is the one that started laying since it was a tiny light colored egg. I think the other is my brabanter because it was very odd shaped but larger than the silkies egg, and I'm pretty sure it was white and not tinted. My silkies stopped laying since the higher protein food ran out but I did get more, so we shall see if they start again. So in the big coop I have 7 layers and 8 eggs so now I have 8 layers and in the small coop I believe that now all three are laying. So I have 5 more that need to start laying. I try to keep track of everyone since I have a small flock I mark everything down, it helps my stress level and takes my mind off of things I don't need to worry about.

Rough day at work with this one girl causing so much stress for everyone after dealing her ( or just listening) I have a headache that just won't go away. So with all of her crap going on I was 30 minutes late leaving.

Have a good evening.
