NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm curious because if I cannot find a home for this splash Silkie roo, I'm seriously considering having him processed. IF I can find someone who would process a Silkie. My husband, being a chef, I'm sure would love to try Silkie chicken. If I cannot find a home for this guy that may be the end result. Maybe that would push me to add a couple more Orps and raise them to be processed for our own consumption. Hmmm decisions decisions....

Let me dig up the step by step processing article i had found, being a chef it may not be too hard for him to give it a try on his own. (unless he absolutely doesn't want to kill and gut the roo himself)

He just gave me the run down, however I don't trust him. LOL I trust him enough to make me a good meal but processing a chicken?? Ehhhhh IDK

I'm going to try some orp crosses if my orp girl ever matures LOL her and that jersey giant are taking their sweet sweet sweet time LOL. But My hybrids will be great for the eating my son keeps picking up the heavy one and tells me she is so juicy, when she stops laying we can but for now she is a great layer so no. So I started watching videos on processing and it isn't bad, I thought I would have a hard time watching it but no, so that is step. I told my son we both have to learn how. So going to watch some more videos. I guess it's the smell that can get you and then the gutting. But I'm going to take some eggs over to my neighbor who is always gutting something and see if we can strike a deal and he teach me things and we can make trades.

So since everyone free ranges together now, I've now found my hybrids eggs in the silkie coop at least two a day. Those silkies are up to something I swear. My roo still can't figure out what they are and as soon as he attempts mating they piece out.

According to Rancher those Silkies cant be trusted !

The hardest part is killing it for me ...Dont care for de - feathering much either .
Once it is dead I can process it . I cut up a lot of store bought chicken over the years .
You have to be a little careful when you gut it .
we have done 2 or 3 ...at a time ..it is tiring ..one other person is helping me

I'm going to continue to give a spritz here and there of the neem oil over the next few weeks and hopefully by December I'll be good to go thru winter.

A friend of mine is looking for a barred rock hen and a polish hen to add to her flock if anyone has any or knows of anyone.

AQHA ~ Adoravachick has some really nice silkies, thats who I got Duncan from. She's in Cobleskill, I don't believe thats too far from you. Not sure if she has anything for sale right now but if you shoot her a message on here or on FB she may be able to tell you what she might be parting with in the near future.

Lynzi, I found plucking silkies to be pretty easy. The dark skin makes it easy to see if you missed any feathers and the fluff peels off better than regular feathers. The most difficult thing is reaching in to remove the insides because they are small enough that your hand will not fit inside. Mine were older than they should have been and a bit rubbery, but made excellent soup. The Naughty Roo Soup was way better than the naughty biting spurring roos. I bought my first chicks in years from TSC and cleared out the silkie tub the last day they were selling chicks. Unfortunately, most were roos. Still have the friendliest rooster and five hens. Poor things only resemble silkies, but make sweet little pets and lay very well.
