NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning

Rancher congrats on the new addition! Im looking for a few leghorns not sure what color i do like the brown and black ones.

Cass thanks for the info, im pretty sure my roo has mated with everyone even the silkies looks like all eggs are fertilized.

The chooks seemed to enjoy the weather yesturday or it just didnt phase them. Working next years garden. I hope i get enough extra cash from the holiday rush to get some 1/4 hardware cloth for the garden the little buggers ate my hot peppers.

Someone laid a 3 3/8 oz egg. I thought they would stop that now that they havebeen laying for a bit. Well i did get one two weeks ago as well. Omg ouch i know my sex links are big but still ouch baby. But they look fine. Its cool to see a big egg no doubt but i worry when they do that.

So one of the silkies decided to lay an egg after we locked up. I guess so we wouldnt take it? They dont have a light so i wonder was this another way to hide eggs from me lol.

Well off to work! Have a good day.

Here is GLASSHEN'S spur-sporting hen that she wanted to show everyone. I think she's a handsome bird!

I have a copy of the Historic and Endangered Livestock and Poultry. This is what it says about the Buckeye. Created by Nettie Metcaf , who crossed the Cornish Games, Brahmas and Black Breasted Gamefowl. to create a peacombed competitor to the RIR. The original Buckeye was a fluffy bird with a dark, lustrous color. The Buckeye fanciers created numerous varieties, but the RIR won the battle for popularity and the Buckeye faded away. I wonder if what we see today bears any resemblance to the original.

Keep in mind that many breeds are composite breeds. A combination of breeds. Such as the Lamona. Created by the USDA in 1912. The Rhode Island White is not related to the Red.

As each successive breed ousted another the previous breed began to decline and be lost. Some like the White Holland have been lost completely.

The importance of keeping some of these breeds is for the genetics. Once they are lost they're gone for good.

Now, I don't know what exactly this means but it says that the Mitochondrial DNA mutates more rapidly than cellular DNA., changes to the Mitochondrial DNA provide a yardstick for dating events over thousands of years.

Some one asked about creating their own Cornish X's. What I've gleaned is this is, " Free range chickens need strong legs and must be able to move about , something the Cornish Rock hybrids cannot do". They were developed using the Cornish Games crossed to other breeds. "The white being crossed to the White Plymouth Rock to create the Rock Cornish Game hen." ( I don't believe the "hen" part means female).

I suppose you could develop your own line of birds, but it may take some time. Keep in mind that " the RBST, Rare Breeds Survival Trust intends to preserve a naturally mating , utilitarian type."

I don't know how they get the eggs used in the commercial industry for Cornish X chicks.

Also keep in mind that while we may be buying certain "endangered" breeds they may very well be "endangered" in the sense that one good bout of disease or a predator attack could wipe out our entire flock.

This is why the ALBC only considers flocks of a certain size flock in it's recording and breeder records. I believe it's 50 or more. I have Delaware but don't consider myself a breeder in the ALBC sense.

I like the Brown in that they have a camouflage factor the whites and blacks do not. Same white eggs different color bird. Not that you asked.

Morning All,

Woke up this morning to something moving around in my bedroom wall again!

Thought we managed to get rid of the mice, apparently they are back! I'll have to get some more of that bait stuff to put down in the basement again.

Went the feed store this morning to stock up on rabbit feed and of course I should have picked up one of those metal tin cans to store their food in and I didn't. Now I have a full back of feed in the shed that I'm sure will have a hole in the bottom of it by tomorrow morning. I gotta find something to keep it in that the mice can't get to.

Glass ~ Wow that it weird. Maybe you can be the first to experiment with Ke's idea of using a potato to remove them!

Well this is what I would do. Set traps. There are those that are easy to set with no fingers near the killing end. OR they sell the commercial type that look like a rectangle tin can. OR you could make a water bucket type trap where they fall in and drown. OR you could get some Mint oil and wet some cotton balls and leave those around, (if no chickens can get at them). OR you can get a cat. OR leave a bucket deep enough with bait in the bottom so they fall in and then dump their live bodies out where you can only hope they don't come back from. I don't advise poisons of any kind.

I have my scratch in a metal garbage can and if the lid is not left on tight they will get in. IMHO dead mice don't come back.

Oh and you must seal any holes where they might be getting in.

I have no idea how they get into the shed...that has always boggled my mind. If I can't find any holes from the inside then how on earth are they getting in there? We've used the bait traps before and that helped TONS last year and all summer. We hadn't had any. But of course there hasn't been anything down there for them to come get and bring back to their nests so now new ones have arrived. I'll have the try the bucket approach. I haven't had a problem with those metal garbage cans, I like them because they have the handle that seals the lid down when you bring it up over the can.

Yeah, I have a mice problem and all my feed is put up - but I guess just enough drops or isn't eatten that is must be freaking mouse heaven.

I thought I purchased one buckeye pullet from a hatchery - but she must be red sex link - she is no where near the standard.

So I'm going for a breeder in the spring - what I would really like is year old hens .... but oh well. I don't know anyone within driving distance to check with.

I am set on Buckeyes and Marans ..... with a few fun single birds thrown in for eye candy. :)
