NY chicken lover!!!!

The roo is coloring up well, nice & silver. The pullet, still all black. They are too young yet for breeding. Maybe in the spring. Hope so anyhowl

My hen won't be ready til spring too. I expect I'll be hatching a lot of them next year, Lord willing. The son of my originals is not a nice guy. He's came at me more than once. I only have two hens laying I think. Though I have more than six hens.

I don't expect to incubator hatch marans anymore. All broody's will have at least some of their eggs.

Quote: Anytime, I'm ready. I can get up to 5 of them, they are small geese, or if there is't much room, just 3.

Yesterday, 2 Marans pullets started laying. Not bad color for their first eggs, found 2 again today...yeah!

Also my Coronations are starting up, but no one else....

Asking because I take vacation time 1st week of december and was looking for something to do with my son.

So does it take time for the maran egg to get darker?

I have a wellie that should be laying soon. Funny thing is I have a amber sexlink who lays darker eggs and I wonder what the wellie's egg will look like I don't think it will be as dark as my sexlink LOL
Congrats on the new layers!

I know my Faverolle recently started laying but will her eggs ever get bigger? they are silkie eggs size, I think I'm being impatient she's only been laying for a week.

Were these babies you were raising or full grown? I should have stated that this one is definitely a full grown rabbit. Thank goodness - I can't imagine trying to take care of a baby bunny this time of year since we've just gone into busy season where I work.
Mine was babies. I don't think a wild full grown will be the easiest ether though. They are use to being free caging can be real stress full on an animal not to mention sounds like head injury to your rabbit.

It may just be poop ...because of the prolapse a lack of control in that muscle .
will she be getting a bath ? after that take some real honey & wipe that in & around the vent ..helps healing
They suggest separating her & putting her some place quiet . giving her no layer for a few days . Just greens , Etc
I bathed her on Thursday I didn't today cause I worked late last night and slept a lot today. I did put some prep-h on her and tucked it back in went in easier than yesterday. I am going to bath her sat morning and re examine her. She is by her self atm in a 2x4ft water trough. I'll try to find real honey tomorrow.

Morning
Today is my middle daughter's birthday. My family is coming over to see her. I have to make a lot of cupcakes for her party tomorrow. Then I am up at 1:30am on Monday to go back to work. Having a paycheck again will be nice but I'm not so keen on getting up that early again.

Morning all. Opening day and seven shots heard this morning. Dh left at 4 am to grt to his spot at his secret hollow. Hope he gets one.

Lynzi...just keep at it. I have a hen the same way. I use eprinex and put some dust in her crest. Keep changing the bedding and spraying and dusting. You will win.

Rancher...x-ceptional! Did you decide on a heritage breed yet? I like my heritage rir. Going to get some more in the spring and hatch some of my own.

Tab...happy bithday to your middle daughter! I have 3 daughters myself. I knoow all about making cupcakes at late hours!

Going to be a nice day. Enjoy it for me as I will be at the pharm!

hope everyone had a good week.
eagle my rooster has bugs but none of the hens do. my 8 teenage chickens are a pain in the you know where. 5 are roos--2 of them are beautiful rir but are getting mean and attacking and biting. guess they are going byebye to my son in law. im tired of getting bit in the hand and my daughter had to give one the boot this morning cause it attacked her leg. too bad, their colors were gorgeous. the only thing good about those stupid teenage roos is that my hens don't put up with their crap and put them into their place. the 20 degree nights are pretty darn cold. I ordered 24 bales of hay to stack around the coop for added insulation.

well, first week of work was great, no stress, but I am exhausted. my body is not ready so I need to take it easy so I don't end up in the same situation I was in before.
tab, good luck going back to work! money is always a necessity.

for the mite situation, my local chicken whisperer said that VETrx (for poultry) works for some. apparently the bugs don't like the eucalyptus mediciney smell. he said to spray or rub it under their wings so it gets on their skin and works its way into their system. also drop some into some warm water and mix it up so they drink it. it also helps with their sneezing to keep their passage ways open so they don't develop infections.

well, sitting here with my tea, hope everyone who is hunting has good luck. the deer like to come to my property and party under the apple trees.

update on coop bedding. the sand method seems to be working for the chickens and ducks. layer of sand then bedding on the top, easy to clean. the ducks get 1/2 sand on one side of area and bedding on the other. the water they splash around gets on the sand and just goes down into the ground and the bedding side stays much drier. I sprinkled DE in-between the sand and bedding layers for the chickens.

anyone on propane at their house??? fyi, propane pricing is gonna go up --it has been going up slowly but its gonna start some small jumps. there are going to be short supplies and allocations for it this winter apparently.(hubby in the industry so I get the inside scoop) so, fill up now and make sure your 20lbers for your grills are full also in case you need for emergency cooking. I would almost ask your propane company to set an extra tank and have it filled. (that's how paranoid of a person I am) the company that I now work for does fuel oil. I have not heard any rumors yet on that, if I do I will post to keep everyone informed.

ok, now that I have rambled--everyone have a good weekend.

I am really starting to love this fermented feed. There is less poop on the boards! Even if that is the only benefit I get out of spending the time it takes to prepare it the less time I spend poop scooping seems to be a heaven send. The girls really seem to look forward to it. I'm giving it twice a day. I think I'm using less feed overall but I'll have to wait longer and take a look back at my ledger in a few weeks to see low long this bag lasted versus bags before it.

I have a question for other fermenters, how well do you drain/strain the feed? So you just scoop it out with a siv and let that be it or do you prefer to let it drain to a drier consistency? Why?

Breella, I use two two gallon buckets from TSC and a colander from the Dollar store. I put the colander over one bucket and pour until its full. I let it drain while I do something else, it's a 4quart one. Then I take bucket, colander and my trusty wooden spoon out and scoop it into whatever bowl I have scattered around the pen, and fill the dog bowl in the coop with a large part. My bunch do not share or take turns well, so multiple locations ensure that everyone, even the youngest get something in their bellies when everyone is in full feeding frenzy. I seem to use about two colanders full a day.

We did have a mishap when one of the girls was flying out and struck the full colander and bucket tipping them over. I was unhappy to spill some of the liquid, but it was ok.

The process is very forgiving. I like a thick mix, that holds its shape when you plop it in the bowls.

I find it amusing the equipment we each choose for our systems. Buckets with holes drilled, electric paint stirrers, from the masculine side, while I use kitcheny stuff, wooden spoon and colander...Interesting the way we solve problems with the materials we are most familiar with.
