NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi- give your orps a chance to settle in. Each week they had a new setup, flock member, fence, location or coop. As Rancher says, change upsets them and will put them off laying. Also, make sure you are using a bright enough bulb to mimic daylight. The only ones laying for me now are my first year birds and an occasional NH second year bird.
House - thanks for the heads up. We have fuel oil, but primarily been using the woodstove. But my parents use massive quantities of propane for the corn dryer. Combined with the lower corn prices, that is going to sting a bit.
Tab - good luck on your return and happy birthday to the middle little.
Been busy here prepping for winter still. Horse barn doors are closed up, going to get some more hay tomorrow before the rain comes. Harvey the dog is settling in and is very tolerant of a little girl that tends to do whatever she wants despite her parents' wishes. Canned up apple pie filling and applesauce a couple weeks ago. Starting the house clean and prep for the turkey day gathering of hubby's family here.
corn dryers usually get some really awesome pricing considering they can go thru MANY gallons an hour--hopefully they have a couple of 1000 gallon tanks there.--good luck!

Hi All! DH got a buck this morning. Yahoo!!! He hasn't hunted in several years. I see canning meat in my very near future. I still have 5 of the 7 BCM roo's so maybe I'll try canning roo's as well.

We normally heat with propane but couldn't really afford it. We haven't had our furnace on in over 3 years. We now heat with a wood stove. I'm sure the price of wood will go up also.

Afl - DH's DR appointment got changed until mid December so I won't be coming North just yet.

My girls are still looking poorly from their molt but egg production is on the rise. My 2 little Sizzles want to sit on eggs again. Every night I pick them up and take their eggs. I'm sure they don't know just how stubborn I am.

I too have been preparing for Winter .. Plastic on the back side of the coop

Paper Bags of Leaves & grass clippings waiting to be put away

The baby coop weather proofed & filled with all the bags for the winter deep litter

theres even room for my garden cart & some other supplies

On the bugs, I think they are lice. Tomorrow I will dawn them. And have reserved the wood ashes from the fireplace for them. Maybe get some DE, but I worry about it killing my earthworms in the compost eventually. Worried about Sevin also, so may go the harder route. The bedding is in the wheelbarrow, if I put it in the compost now, the chickens won't be visiting the pile until spring, will they be dead by then? Or will the blasted things live on forever in the compost or garden.

So Eprinex doesn't work on lice? I had applied that when I put them to bed. Well, at least they will get rid of any worms they might have had.

Yesterday I had spent way too much time taking the hardware cloth part way off so I could latch the windows for the winter, washing them at the same time, and the walls and roosts. One of the middle group of chicks from the summer came in to lay her egg, and I picked her up and checked her because she had just been scratching...then I checked her friend, yep, her too. Maybe this will explain the lack of eggs.

On the fermenting, I had read lots about using ACV to get it going, but then read about using the whey from yoghurt or kefir. So I used that, and it started bubbling quick.

Gramma-- I work at HP Hood in Vernon. I inspect the machines and work area after production and wash up before the next days production. We package greek yogurt and cottage cheese. After my inspections I do regular quality control on product.
