NY chicken lover!!!!

Breella-- http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com/p/fermented-feed.html has some helpful info on FF
"If I ever smell either yeasts/molds or alcohol in my feed I have used ACV to help quickly bring the pH level down (increase acid) which (in moderation) can help retard the growth of the yeasts and allow the Acetobacter bacteria that's contained in the ACV mother to digest any alcohol that may have been produced by naturally occurring yeasts. When used in small amounts, it can retard the growth of the yeasts just enough to allow the LABs enough time to re-establish a dominant colony that is able to keep the molds/yeasts in check. "

I just started a batch of FF so I'm hoping it goes okay!

Lynzi--That's funny about Gru, I have a hen who does the same, if she flies out of the fenced in area and can't get back in she stands by the front door until somebody comes outside and then she runs over to the coop and waits by the fence until somebody can let her back in.

TOB--The heater really is economical, especially since we have it on a timer so it goes off later in the afternoon and comes back on around 2am so it's not running all night. I'm so happy that I finally found something that works!

[Was looking around on the site, found something on Iveron, Ivermectin, and Eprinex Questions post 13 saying that Eprinex works on worms, lice and mites. So I did start well. And I will continue to clean the coop, sweeping out all the rest of the litter, washing the lower walls, and taking out. The carpet pieces in nest boxes and washing the nest boxes.

But, maybe I should hold off on bathing the birds, so I don't weaken the Eprinex? Or does it absorb so quickly that I would not be washing it off? Or, if I just spray the dawn and water, as Lynzi suggests, would that be the way to go?

I always have so many questions on what should be easy.

Glass hen if would just toss the litter from the coop to be safe. But that's just me.

The wood ash method truly isn't hard. I found that grabbing them off the roost at night and bathing them was the easiest way. Just have to make sure your light is on your head or you can hang it so you can see. I want to say I dust bathed them every other day 3 times then 10 days in case the eggs hatched. Haven't seen a creepy crawlie again. Of course now they are all molting :D

When I used the eprinex earlier this summer I bathed the silkies first and then put it on them. The larger birds I did not bathe - that would just be too hard for me and I didn't want to risk getting scratched. So I sprayed their backs and tried getting under their wings with the dawn and the next day I used the eprinex on them.

I love that I cleaned out the new coop the other day, replaced the shavings, put some hay in there, then cleaned out of the nestboxes, filled them with fresh shavings and hay, only to open it up this morning and see the nest boxes FILLED with poop! UGH Well I guess it doesn't matter since they're not laying anyway.

Got some hatching eggs from Ke5hde yesterday and set them in the bator. All silkies (Rancher, I know you're jealous). Can't wait to see what hatches out! I should have a better hatch rate this time because I have more eggs than my last hatches. So we'll see.

County Boy sold me some lovely birds today. One rooster, one hen, and one frizzle are mille fleur cochin project birds, and he also let me keep one buff barred cochin cockerel, one buff barred pullet, and one black barred split to buff pullet in exchange for picking them plus three other chicks up from featherz and running them over to him. I'm in love already

Can't wait to get started breeding them this spring.

For those with bugs, if you don't mind going the pesticide route, you can dust your birds with Sevin and it kills them fast. I did that to get rid of the crazy lice I had a few weeks ago. You dust again ten days later for lice and seven for mites, but boy did it ever get rid of those lice. They were dead in minutes.

Congrats on the new babies and good next spring I can't wait to see what you come up with. How are the faverolles? You are breeding them right? (I hope I have the right person

) Sevin works and so does Pirmethryn (sp) both work fast. Sevin you can get anywhere, the other would be TSC.
...... Harvey the dog is settling in and is very tolerant of a little girl that tends to do whatever she wants despite her parents' wishes. Canned up apple pie filling and applesauce a couple weeks ago. Starting the house clean and prep for the turkey day gathering of hubby's family here.

Glad the Harvey and your little one are doing well. Yummy canned apple pie filling. I think I'm going to make some today now that my mouth is watering.

I am noticing that the pattern on this barred rock is different than the pattern on the other three that I have. Victory is a very shy bird and hard to get photos of so this was the best I could do this evening.
Hen I'd say.

Your Welcome TOB

I checked out my chickens today for buggies ...no sign at all .
They do dust bathe everyday ...they enjoyed it today with sun !

However I got another scratch on my face .
While the rest were waiting in the coop ..
Lucky the big Roo decided to chase the Little Roo Skiddy
the door was partially open to where I was setting .
Skiddy decided that was a exit & flew up on top of my head ..
Unfortunately he couldnt steady himself & he scratched my cheek trying to .
Turn the other cheek ...last time it was the right side .
I grabbed him but too late ...my husband saw it ..
I wish he had a camera ...it must have looked pretty funny a roo trying to balance on my head ..LOL

Ouch you do seem to get scratched a lot. Poor little man tough times.

Hi All! DH got a buck this morning. Yahoo!!! He hasn't hunted in several years. I see canning meat in my very near future. I still have 5 of the 7 BCM roo's so maybe I'll try canning roo's as well.

We normally heat with propane but couldn't really afford it. We haven't had our furnace on in over 3 years. We now heat with a wood stove. I'm sure the price of wood will go up also.

Afl - DH's DR appointment got changed until mid December so I won't be coming North just yet.

My girls are still looking poorly from their molt but egg production is on the rise. My 2 little Sizzles want to sit on eggs again. Every night I pick them up and take their eggs. I'm sure they don't know just how stubborn I am.

Congrats on the buck what size did he get? Good luck with the broodies.
Gramma-- I work at HP Hood in Vernon. I inspect the machines and work area after production and wash up before the next days production. We package greek yogurt and cottage cheese. After my inspections I do regular quality control on product.

MMMMMMmmmm yummy to bad I'm lactose intollerrant but that doesn't always stop me LOL.

The cheeps are good running around in the mud and leaves. Funny our alien silkies are supper small and our roo is 4x their size and he tried to mate and it was a site he just couldn't get on her right so he danced for her and went about his day. OMG the roo dance is makes me laugh everytime.

So I candled eggs today day 4 and all looks good, I did have hard time with the darker eggs. I can't believe how dark and light my sex links eggs are goofy girls but they aren't exactly from the same parents either so who knows what their mix truly is. I will re-candle day 7, 12, and 17 this way I can throw away duds before they explode and before lock down. I was really excited to see development in the eggs, I wasn't and I'm still not sure what to expect with this being my first time doing this with a homemade incubator. But so far so good.

Any Suggestions on candling dark eggs?

Gonna try and get some cleaning done then make a feast and watch Dracula and The Walking Dead at my dad's house, My brother and his girlfriend and baby will be there as well. I love our little family thing we do. Nothing like the living dead to bring us all together.

Do they have Mites or Lice? If it's Lice, I would make a solution of Dawn and Water and put it in a spray bottle and spray under their wings and down their backs. They will drop off. I found that was the best thing for getting rid of lice. What is with these nasty bugs this year?!?

I cleaned my silkie coop again today, sprayed it with Neem again, but didn't get the chance to look at my lavender hen again. I will do that first thing in the morning and if she's still got them, I'll spray or dust her crest feathers again.

Folks be aware that while chickens don't swim they do produce oil. Washing them this late in the year may not be a good idea.

Is it true that adding some ACV to fermented feed "reverses" it from fermenting into alcohol? (I know it doesn't really reverse it, but I think I read something about ACV with THE MOTHER digesting alcohol proteins) I think I had a batch go the wrong way due to lack of water while I was at work and want to know if it can be saved with some water and ACV before I trash it.

I'm guessing hen too. Keep in mind that the Barred pattern and the Cuckoo pattern can be confused. She may look different because she has some Cuckoo in her back ground.

Both the Cuckoo and the Barred patterned chicks can be feather sexed. The difference is in the evenness of the pattern.
