NY chicken lover!!!!

Finally got my NPIP renewed yesterday. Been putting it off, but needed to get it done before its too cold.

awesome!!!!
I would call your town highway department. If they aren't the ones who take care of that they could at least put you in the right direction.

Picture time!

I broke up our pumpkin and gave it to the flock, they loved it!

This is my new EE, she absolutely loves Lady (the dog). If the dog is in the yard, the EE follows her as close as she can.
Lady got a venison bone yesterday (hubby finally got a deer) and the chickens were trying to steal it from her! I wish I had a video of it.
still love that coop, how cute!!!

Called the NYS DOT and they're over there right now picking up that deer, so thanks to those who answered my question!

Set up my poultry netting today to keep the Orps fenced in. They should like it, it's bigger than their last fenced in area because I was able to use the house as part of the barrier...

Very nice, glad that deer is gone. I hope the orps enjoy their pasture and the kids enjoy the outdoors without chicken poo!

I tried to raise a few baby bunnies when I was a teenager. It is a long story, but to shorten it a lot, I was mowing some tall grass and noticed some things coming out of the mower that wasn't grass. I managed to catch 3 that were unharmed and tried to raise them. One died that night. I think that it might have been run over by the wheel. The second lasted for a week, then the third was doing great then a month later it died. The vet that my mom asked said that wild rabbits in captivity lose the will to live so I was lucky tha they lasted that long. I'm not sure if she really called a vet or was trying to make me feel better...I think that I should ask her. I hope that you have more luck then I did..but then again I think I was 13 or 14 at the time.

My lights around the chicken coop & run.

Just enough light that I can see around without a flashlight!

More rabbit questions! 'My' rabbit is doing better. Drinking, eating the hay, and his head issues seem to be improving. I'd like to get him outside in something because being in the workshop seems to make him panicky. What do I need to make a proper outdoor enclosure for a rabbit that's predator proof and escape proof? Will it need an apron like a chicken run would to keep the rabbit in? Not that I think he'll be doing much digging in his current state.

I have wild rabbits living under my wooden coop. They're very good at digging. I don't think your's would have a problem getting out if it wanted to.

Sunnyside, Luvmychicks, Lynzi....

Thanks for sharing the fun (and festive!) pics. Loved them.

Playing catch-up on BYC. Has been a very busy couple of days...

Nothing new here, which is basically a good thing I think! I'm still getting between 2 and 4 eggs a day from the 4 birds that are currently laying, so I'm not complaining. I actually have had enough to share some eggs with my neighbor next door, which was kind of a neat feeling!

Stay warm, everyone. I hear it will be 50F again in a couple of days.

Love the way it looks I might do something like that.

No chicken friends around to get eggs from?

I feel your pain Lynzi. Still only one egg a day. Tho when I looked at the few eggs I had today it seemed they were all different and one pullet size. I wonder if Sophie started laying? It had dark speckles like Lucy's had when she laid. Hoping Sophie started laying and they get darker. She is BCM.

I need to tell my egg customers they won't be getting eggs for a month or so. OTs almost time for me to,start,Christmas cookies and I refuse to buy eggs !!!

I might try putting some lights around the coop as well since my solar powered spot light is only good for one or 2 times turning on at night with the sunlight being so scarce. Their water was frozen before 7 tonight. It's going to be a cold one. At least I got their pop door moved to other end. All I need to do tomorrow is put the "porch" over it to keep the snow off the door and make a wind block with it once I get plastic on the sides. Everything else coop wise for winter is complete. But I still refuse to put their heated water bowls in. The cord is ran but I am holding off as long as I can :)

I collected eggs today and found out that I have a new layer.

found eggs on the floor there are two nest boxes that they will not use ugh

at least the egg wasn't buried it's a step up I guess. so I thought I would make two more nest boxes that way they will at least have some more options. I'm gonna have to start selling eggs and barter with them. I have a neighbor in construction and one who is an awesome hunter.

So a friend gave me two siklies about 3 months old the one is sick and she asked if I could try and nurse it back to help and I said I would give it my all. These are two blue silkies believed to be 1 male and 1 female. The male is the sick one and the pullet isn't but seems to deterioate when seperated along with the male. They ruled out most diseases and figure either head trauma or genetic issues. Regardless they are cute and I got some venison backstraps for it.

So my question is how do I cook the venison backstraps? I'm terrible at cooking red meat I'm a chicken girl LOL

Miquid I took boxes out because of lack of use. Maybe if you put the nesting boxes on the floor or at least one, where they lay on the floor maybe they would use them?

Give those silkies lots of garlic and oregano to help their Immune systems build up. And I wouldn't put them with my flock either in case it contagious. I've heard of silkies getting ill from paint chips. It had lead in it and made them Ill but not contagious. They ended up testing the carcass. I can't remember how they got the lead out tho. :/

With portabello mushrooms, onions, garlic and butter in the frying pan! Don't over cook it or it will get tough quick. I eyeball it but I'm sure you could look up the appropriate temp for venison. When the juice runs clear it's done for me.
Stony might be able to give better directions...
