NY chicken lover!!!!

its their drinking water, with both of us working(out at dawn and home after dark) its the only way I can make sure they have water. at this time of year I have no way of protecting them outside from predators so they stay inside 5 to 6 days a week. the fox finds his way inside the small run every time--he is a climber. we make due the best we can. my coop is on the ground so its not as bad as some. just some extra cleanup. they all hate the snow anyway. I feel like u just scolded me stony!!!!!
take it as you wish

. Sounds to me like you need to do a serious run make over. So your birds can be out during the day and safe. Being cooped up that long is a terrible life imho. Bad for the birds. Again, my opinion. But it comes from experience.

I have a little project I am going to try to see if I can keep the water cleaner in the coop. I will post it when I finish it. Just need to charge the battery for the drill lol

Stony I agree. If I could keep the food and water outside I would but I already ran the extension cord inside the coop so inside the water will be. I'm still going to feed them outside till there's to much snow.

This morning they all decided to pile in their old run. I use it for storage now but left the pop door open so they had a safe place,to run from the hawk. The hawks around today. I can hear him but not see him. They are venturing out for the fruit, yogurt, & veggie treat this morning
you are risking frostbite with heated water in the coop. Looks like all of your girls probably won't be affected from looking at their heads. But still.....

I did it last year with no problems. I have it up high to keep shavings out. If we can get a day with temps over 30 or more id like to move it outside. But it's so cold trying to get cords and zip ties to be flexible is tough.

Well I don't know if that duck egg I found this morning was frozen or not, sure felt like it, but I ended up cooking it around noon and giving it back to my ducks as a reward. Does anyone know if an egg is edible after it's been frozen? I didn't think it would be and that's why I fed it back to them. Tomorrow I'll be sure to get out there ASAP to collect the next one.

As long as the shell is not cracked I would say so. You can freeze eggs for future use though I suspect don't care to bother.

I have eaten many of my eggs that were frozen - I keep them separate from any I sell ... and they don't seem to fluff up as much - but they taste the same to me ....

I have water in my hoop/run/coop ... and had a bucket in my other coop the last 4 years. Never a problem, but glad to hear the others talk about frost bite and such .... if there were a knockdown and a bird got soaked - I would need to be right on it .... so I'll start to mull over wood frames and other things where I can sit the bucket down in the frame and have very little chance of a tip over.

Broke down & ordered my muck boots & carhart hoody I wanted. Early merry christmas to me but I got the boots for $60 less than the store & free 2 day shipping so I couldnt beat the price

Now hopefully I will be warm enough to move the extension cord so I can get their water outside :)

I got a pair of those cheapies at TSC. Didn't last the season. They got a cut in them somehow. What a waste of money. I need something that is super tough.

To many branches and sticks falling here. Unseen in the snow and it's right through the side.

I also need something long to keep my pj's dry in the morning. If snow gets in the boot ugh!

This was the busiest I've ever been in one day at work! (I'm not complaining at all.)

I also am looking for some higher boots to trudge up to the coop in. My hunting boots are the warmest I have, but only go just below my knee. Maybe some waders are in order...
With all that wind Saturday night the plastic I put on the run blew half off. Now it's not going anywhere…..lol

Hope everyone is staying warm!
