NY chicken lover!!!!

Thankfully I was able to shovel the wet bedding out last night. I didn't want to leave it in there and let the humidity get any higher. I've been trying to think up ways I can lower the humidity in the coop as it gets as high as 66% some nights! This is why I'm moving towards taking out the water.

Off to feed and water the chickens!

I've been contemplating doing the same. I have the waterer hanging in their coop and they still manage to knock it from time to time causing most of it to spill causing wet shavings.

duckers are so superior to chickens. Pretty much in every way

except they make a bigger mess in the coop with water and poop. other wise I agree!

foxy brown tracks all over this morning around the coop--- no one had any desire to go out when I left the door open so I closed the door and back inside I came.

sorry about everyone's losses this week.

My ducks are not allowed to have water OR food in their coop. LOL No need to add to their mess! They have no problem waiting until morning for it. Chickens on the other hand, well, they don't like to leave the castle they are now in so they get their water inside.

all of my birds have to wait until I let them out to eat or drink. None of them seem to have a problem with that. It has been that way here for 8 years. Food in the coop attracts mice. Water in the coop makes a mess and adds moisture to the coop.

I have a little project I am going to try to see if I can keep the water cleaner in the coop. I will post it when I finish it. Just need to charge the battery for the drill lol

Stony I agree. If I could keep the food and water outside I would but I already ran the extension cord inside the coop so inside the water will be. I'm still going to feed them outside till there's to much snow.

This morning they all decided to pile in their old run. I use it for storage now but left the pop door open so they had a safe place,to run from the hawk. The hawks around today. I can hear him but not see him. They are venturing out for the fruit, yogurt, & veggie treat this morning

RE: Construction They usually will have you come down and file a Freedom of Information Act paper and they will call you or mail you the info. Not like the old days when you could just call up the town board (I grew up in a small neighborhood in Queens, we still have that there, and can still usually get answers like that!) Everything up here in our neighborhood is so official.

RE: Black Cat my mother in law has several ferals and semi ferals who live outdoors that she feeds, but I don't think that any of ours would travel that far (I hope not at least) if it becomes a problem cat I could try and trap it for you and we can see if it's spayed/neutered and if not I can take it to SNAP. They don't bother my chickens at all, My orange Tabby Oliver actually walks me to the coop, jumps onto the roof and waits for me, and walks back to the house most of the time when I'm working out there. She's gotten close enough to look into the mesh and see the chickens. She's a hunter. She used to bring me birds, snakes and squirrels all the time but since her cancer she's wound down. I also think she finds the chickens to be hard prey in general, and she's only got one good eye (cancer was in her eye).

Also: Lesson Learned

No more large water in the coop. About 4gal of water. This is how I spent my evening. I'm going to make a cookie tin heater for the large water and it's going outside behind the wind break I'm putting up tomorrow. I will only keep a small 1gal water in the coop until I get my automatic coop door opener and the small water is only going in overnight when the coop door is locked.

I learned my lesson long ago. Even with the gallon waters hanging they made a mess. Nipple waterers inside might be okay, but I don't have enough room to hang one.

Since I open up everyday and they have access to outside on a shavings/straw floor of the run, I just don't bother.

its their drinking water, with both of us working(out at dawn and home after dark) its the only way I can make sure they have water. at this time of year I have no way of protecting them outside from predators so they stay inside 5 to 6 days a week. the fox finds his way inside the small run every time--he is a climber. we make due the best we can. my coop is on the ground so its not as bad as some. just some extra cleanup. they all hate the snow anyway. I feel like u just scolded me stony!!!!!

Whoa, something else we agree on. Scary.

They don't have long to wait in the morning. I keep no food or water in the coop. I raise up the feeders to the top of the run in the evening.

Having chickens gives me a reason to get out out of bed. Sometimes I intend to go back to bed but once outside I rarely do.
