NY chicken lover!!!!

I once got slammed in the head by a bird flying out of the hoop coop door. I get out of the way now. I wait til they're all out before sticking my head in to check on things or do anything around the door. I was worried they'd gotten hurt. I know I did.

With the hoops they come flying off the roost and into the yard. The EE's can go pretty far too.

This is one of the reasons I'm glad I put in a pop door. I had them flying cause my roosts face the door and they would fly out. Also keeps them from trying to run under my feet to get in and out sometimes. I open pop door then main door but anymore with snow they don't want to go any where lol. I have to snow blow them an area again tomorrow since we got like another 5-8 inches I think.

Welcome!!!! Woohoo, a local! I'm in Marathon. What breeds are you looking for and when? I have a mixed flock, but we can sometimes get eggs from others in a "chicken train". Or I got some from Deb in Pompey last June, she has Speckled Sussex, Partridge Rock, Welsummer, buff Orp and EE. I know someone in Cortland with modern game birds. Usually someone knows someone with what you are looking for. And we will be gathering together for a picnic in May, so have access to many breeds we all keep.
Welcome again,
Jen

Hi payner! Welcome to the thread. I am not too far from you in LaFayette, but my flock is a mixed flock, so you would just get mutts, and I'm not getting many eggs at all. But there are others in the area...

welcome Payner! i'm from Moravia, mixed flock also, someone will probably help you out, this forum is great and lots of helpful, friendly people! stay warm...

Payner: Welcome ! can you help zero down what part of NY you are in (big cities close to you) I won't have any until spring but I have Black Copper Marans and EE muts which I will be hatching from. The BCM have Show Quality Daddy - and hatchery quality mommie. I won't have specked sussex until next year - but I have almost a perfect roo - best manners ever, and still ready to get into it to keep peace in the flock, but then stops as soon as the issue is over & never has attacked a human - he actually purrs at me - can't wait to get some mature hens for him.

Cass: I love your list ! I too love practical gifts - socks send me crazy, and this year a family that I hire their young teens to help on the farm gave me a frozen meal in a crock pot bag !!!!! I was delighted that I had a ready made meal ! It was the best gift ever. I guess I am just a solutions oriented dude. I like a little bling or fun stuff - but the really useful is so delightful.

Hi Payner59, Welcome to a great forum!

I live between Corning and Watkins Glen. I'm not sure what breed of chickens you are looking for but I have BCM. I'm just into my 3rd year of trying to breed for that illusive dark egg. The way I looked at it was that you have to start somewhere. (My daughter went to college in Cortland.)

My TS never offers to carry my bags, I'm only 5 ft and every day my spine is falling apart, I really need to ask for help. They will help if asked, if I 'm patient enough to wait for them. I love having doors opened for me but it seems that it's only the elderly that do so. My DH is 66 and he never holds the door for me and nearly knocks me over getting through first. I haven't trained him very well, now have I? lol

Morning all! I see some of you have gotten some nifty giftys, I think some of the best things are the most practical things. Took my daughter out shopping yesterday to get her some professional clothes for her pharm program. That was her gift. We got lucky and made out well with the sales. Work was insane. I wish I could have a percentage of what people spent on their drinks.

My hen downstairs is doing much better. She is still limping but walked around quite a bit this morning when I let her out. She is still quite thin even though she has been eating. I dont know how long it takes to put weight on a chicken. I may put her back in the coop tomorrow night since she seems much better. My silkies are out playing in the snow this morning. Cabin fever I think. Rabbit tracks all over around the coops. From the size of them, its a good sized rabbit.

Time to go to work. Have a good day!

With my hoops there are no pop hole doors. As you can see from the pic they can just launch themselves out the door and into your head if you don't get out of the way. It's an old pic. The half hoops have little floor room to jump to when you're in a hurry to get out. I leave the door open all day even in the winter. Funny thing is the half hoops are the best layers.
