Hope everyone is staying warm in this deep freeze. Girls are venturing outside so they must of finally got their winter feathers in during their molt. Still no more eggs but I keep track of eggs laid & they laid more eggs last month then November so things are getting better.

As for the Flu shot.....I have gotten one every year for at least 20 years. Last year I forgot and got the flu.....was out of work for 2 weeks during Christmas. Then I got bronchitis on top of it. Needless to say I got the shot this year. I just believe everyone's make up is different. I also get pneumonia shot. I have asthma & thankfully it only flares up normally when I am sick. So for me the shots are worth it. And I have never gotten sick from getting them.

Lynzi maybe you could trim her foot feathers to help keep them cleaner? My BCM has foot feathers & they get nasty in the mud. Thankfully they clean up in a few days.

Interesting flu shot stories ... perhaps as armorfirelady indicates - it works for some people and has the opposite effect on others !

So many things officials and professionals want to squeeze into a label ... and they (and people and animals) just don't fit - things are always more complex ... and there is no RIGHT answer - which bugs leaders ! ha ha ha Flow of life and flexibility and diversity .... amen.

What that means is that people can't just knee-jerk their decisions - but have to use .... wait for it .... THEIR BRAINS !

So many brain-lazy people in the world today. Cause and effect good old reasoning things out is a lost art .....

I just rushed out to give my garbage driver some chocolate for driving in this mess and learn he is a Vet with bennies cut and a very nice guy. Smart and pleasant .... now doing a service job that has ridicule attached to it - boy am I glad I gave him some sweets and smiled at him today.

I DO wish I had a better set up for silkies. Something like the inside of a barn that was cleaner. Their feet feathering gets so gross if not tended to on the regular.

One reason i tried to talk my son out of silkies and point him into just about any other bantam breed but nope silkies is what he wants. At least i got him away from the white ones.

You both might try a Hoop Coop with a smaller coop inside. Four panels would give you enough room for a smaller coop inside. Since the hoop part would only be cover you would only have to use poultry wire over the cattle panels and use clear plastic or other type covering over them.

In JLaw's case I would build a raised bed filled with sand or other soil filling.

Being as silkes are small you wouldn't need much floor room in the "covered run" portion of the set up.

Or you might consider a "Car Port" to set up your coop under too.

Sorry, I just have to laugh. I understand where you're coming from though. I've known so many people who have gotten the flu shot after debating whether or not to get it, they had never been sick a day in their life, they get the flu shot and then get sick. Me? I'm one of those people. I've never been sick. Nothing more than a headache (or hangover) ;-) I would never get the flu shot because if I got sick I'd be soooooo PO'ed!!!! Lol
I'm the exact same way. I have never gotten a flu shot and never gotten the flu *knock on wood*
I think it also makes a difference where you work. I sit behind a desk most of the day so I don't come into contact with many people. when I do have to leave the office I do quite a bit of work in jails, however when inmates are sick I don't see them so again, no contact with sick people.

IK it's off topic, but I've never had a flu shot either. I'm happy to get the flu. Had it about 2 months ago and it only lasted 1 day, no medications. My folks never had the flu shot, child never had the flu shot. Grandmother when she was alive got one every year and suffered horribly for weeks afterwards. Flu shots are the fastest growing problem vaccine, the info is at nvic.org they follow the vaccine injuries. People don't realize that this past year when they get the flu shot it isn't a single entity vaccine, I think now it's 4 vaccines in 1 syringe. Remember when they couldn't get the health care providers to take that bird flu vaccine? They put that leftover crap into the next group of flu shots.

There are those who swear off flu shots but for me they seem okay. I'm prone to colds and other things like that so the flu is not fun. We all have different immune systems I guess. Colds can develop into other things such as Pneumonia and Bronchitis. I once lost a month of work to each. My employer was not happy.

Gramma chick--I love those bowls, they look a lot bigger than what I thought they would be. I might have to make a trip to wal-mart when this snow clears up and have a look for some. I usually use some tupperware when I feed FF but those look nice.

I hope everyone is being safe with the snow. I decided not to go into work today. It usually takes me about a half hour to get there but with this snow and other drivers it would take me well over an hour. I'm supposed to be working from home but I'm having too much fun doing other things, like watching the chickens...opps
