NY chicken lover!!!!

Well I know people said they never lost a bird to the cold but I brought all my chickens inside.

I went out to my coop when I got home and the door wouldn't even stay shut. The handle froze open some how only the chain for security reasons kept it shut at all. It still had like a 2 inch gap open.I had 3 birds in nest boxes like 6 huddled in a corner on floor and the rest on roosts next to each other. They was litterly being frozen together. I have like 1 inch of snow blown in there and all the birds had about half inch of snow and then some ice on them also. I have to buy fleece or something for the top vents at my rafters but I don't think it will do much good now. Not to mention I don't think a staple gun can put it through the frozen wood. I think we will try to redo the pen in our basement we think they used for goats way back when this use to be a farm. I have I don't know how many birds in my 2x4 brooder and in my bath tub lol. All I know is they are all out of the coop and in those two spots for now.

I know I could be over reacting but I'd rather not chance loosing any of my birds.

GOOD FOR YOU GLAD you caught it in time ...that doesnt sound like they were safe ..Not with snow & ice on them in the coop .
This wind is Terrible .. it sounds like your vents may be too open . I would cover them with a tarp in the morning .

I have no open areas like that where the snow can blow on them when they are roosting

yeah sadly I made my roof a slant roof with 2x6 rafters so there is a 6 inch gap at top of roof and these high winds is pushing a lot of snow around. Not to mention the cold that is out there. I fell walking out to get second group of chickens. I have to put cross boards in the rafters out side and inside this summer to keep the snow from getting in as easy figure about 2-4 inches away from wall will still let it vent good with how much wind I get up here.

Love all those chicks in a tub - man are they going to be wondering around as soon as it gets light! I used my tub for a brooder 2 years ago - NEVER again.

That is because I HATE cleaning ....

Yeah, if the wind is letting the snow and ice in where they roost - then they needed your help. in the high winds snow and ice got into the front part - but not the back part where they roost -so mine have been ok.

Woke up to light in my windows in my bedroom this morning (7:45),jumped out of bed wondering my alarm didn't go off (at 6:40),looked outside no snow, ran upstairs to get my son up but he was already halfway down the stairs, told him to hurry up and get in the shower because my alarm didn't go off. Made him a lunch, packed his backpack, made him breakfast for the way to school, and checked my email via my phone only to find out there is no school today. :-/

His school barely ever closes so I never thought they'd close due to extremely cold temperatures. This momma is going to need a nap today, especially after being up all night with a sick 4 year old.

I hope all the cheeps are doing ok outside. It was so windy last night. That was another thing that kept me up. I'm sure I have stuff all over my yard!

I can see you running around like a crazy woman now :-D

I knew when they closed the Syracuse city school the Academy would be closed since the buses would not be available for the kids.

My chickens in the hoops where okay this am. No snow here though. The hoops with out runs have an over hang that helps to keep the snow out. I wear a fleece bathrobe that goes to my ankles and fleece pj pants. under my coat when I go out Even when I snow blow. Keeps me warm. Must look strange to the neighbors but I don't care.

It's so cold I saw Amish people buying electric blankets.
