Thank you so much LuvMyChicks. Yes, they are for sure...

Welcom to the new peeps! It is nice to have you.

It is nice to have some peeps from downstate. I used to lived just outside Hyde Park in Dutchess co. I forget sometimes where everyone is. We are from all over the place...It's great!

Well I'm just shocked cuz in the two, going on three years that we've lived here we've never had a problem. Ours usually takes the bags out but then dumps the can when it's light enough to pick up. Last week they didn't come until Friday because a Wednesday was NY Day and Thursday they pulled trucks off the road because of the weather. They are usually here by 10am the latest every Wednesday. For them not to be here yet is weird. The whole road wasn't picked up today.

We've used Dependable Disposal for years and they've been very reliable so far. I do know they come a day later than the usual scheduled one during holiday weeks.

Hello

I'm in Westchester County NY. Just wondering if anyone is near me in Westchester, Putnam or Dutchess? My bf and I are new to raising chickens and our first chicks will arrive around April 23rd. In the meantime I'm keeping myself occupied researching and making plans of course. I can't wait!

How did I miss your entrance. Anyhow Welcome to the coop.

I'm about a dozen pages back but I read on one of these threads where someone opens their feed bags and staples them to the Walls for added wind protection. Thought I'd try it this week end but my walls are plywood. Thought it might help with heat though. All my vents are just below the ceiling (rafters). It took a little tweaking until I got it just right. I'll try to post the pic I have of how it looked until it was just right. It was minus 13. Hasn't happened since.
The frost you see on the glass is moisture/humidity. I've used feed bags on my hoops and they seem to work fine. I also use Fleece.

Again, my apologies for my absence on BYC lately. I've not been good company, anyway. Things finally got worse with our sick dog, Merlin, and on January 2nd, we had to say our final good-byes. I'm still heartbroken, missing him tremendously and having a tough time accepting he is truly gone. He was a special boy.

On a brighter note, I've been keeping VERY busy, and all is well with the chickies (except a tiny bit of frost bite on a few of the birds). I'm still getting eggs from at least a few of the girls daily. Those that miss a day usually lay the following one. It's nice to be able to share eggs with my mother and some of my friends. I'm thinking that the 2 which still aren't laying (1 Columbian Rock and the Brabanter) may not start up 'til spring. I notice the days are getting a teeny bit longer, anyway!

WELCOME TO ALL NEWBIES! You will love it here on BYC. So much to learn and also some great discussions to jump in on. I can't believe I joined up here 1 year ago!

I'm going to try to change my original avatar pic which I've had forever -- and that roo is not even my bird, LOL! I have a fun close-up of my Lav Orp, Chumley I'll try to use.

I am sorry for your loss. Keep in mind that if He had a choice over you or the pound he would have chosen you. Many dogs are not so lucky to be loved. He was. My pastor says all dogs go to heaven, so while the bible doesn't specifically say so, I choose to believe it.

I figured it was humidity so I put a few more vents in but also I got rid of 8 large roo's at that same time. I've had this set up for 3 yrs but this yr I had 8 more birds inside. Like I said, it hasn't happened again after adding the extra vents. My birds don't seem to mind the cold at all, or rain. But let it snow and they don't come out. Must be southern birds.

Can your birds get to the fleece and do they peck at it?

TOB I'm so sorry about your dog. It's so hard to lose a family member. (My pastor also says dogs go to heaven)

Thanks, Rancher. This is the lesson I try to teach my kids which helps to bring some comfort when we lose our animal friends. It helps to know you gave your pets a happy and loving life.

And I, like you, firmly believe that "all dogs go to Heaven." They are a part of what will make it so great.
