NY chicken lover!!!!

Well today is day 4 for the silkies and out of 16 eggs looks like only 3 clears. Not bad i know some ladies dont make it easy for the roos. I cant wait till they hatch.

Today's my birthday and I'm getting myself some blue silkie chicks on Saturday to celebrate. Tomorrow I hope to take advantage of the warm weather to install a vent on the back side of my coop. Not enough ventilation it seems because my roo has frostbite. All the chicks in the workshop are doing fine, even with no heat besides the heat lamps. Little Eve has settled in with the older chicks and is doing just fine. Judging by her wing feathers she's going to be a pretty bird.

Evening all. Horrible day at work. Wish I won the lottery so I could stay home with the cheeps. They are nicer and much more personable. When I left this morning they were all out of their coops enjoying the sun. Added some more pine bedding to the terrorist coop for when the warm front moves in on saturday. The rain and warmer weather will definately push up the humidity in the coops.

Stony--you have some hardy cheeps on your hands. Maybe they come from an alaskan line? lol

Happy Birthday Pyxis and yes we must have chick pics!

Jlaw--good luck on your hatch.

I am such a sucker. A lady at work who knows I have chickens flagged me over today and said, "Would you like six more chickens?" Turns out her neighbor down the road has some two year old leghorns, a silkie, and a silkie rooster, and has decided he no longer wants them because they are not laying him eggs. Well sure they're not, it's winter and they're a year older. Give them till spring and they'll start again. Nope, she says, he's leaving the coop open and throwing them out each night trying to get a fox to eat them.

What a jerk. Sorry.

You, on the other hand, Pyxis, are a very kind sucker! Kudos to you.

Again, my apologies for my absence on BYC lately. I've not been good company, anyway. Things finally got worse with our sick dog, Merlin, and on January 2nd, we had to say our final good-byes. I'm still heartbroken, missing him tremendously and having a tough time accepting he is truly gone. He was a special boy.

On a brighter note, I've been keeping VERY busy, and all is well with the chickies (except a tiny bit of frost bite on a few of the birds). I'm still getting eggs from at least a few of the girls daily. Those that miss a day usually lay the following one. It's nice to be able to share eggs with my mother and some of my friends. I'm thinking that the 2 which still aren't laying (1 Columbian Rock and the Brabanter) may not start up 'til spring. I notice the days are getting a teeny bit longer, anyway!

WELCOME TO ALL NEWBIES! You will love it here on BYC. So much to learn and also some great discussions to jump in on. I can't believe I joined up here 1 year ago!

I'm going to try to change my original avatar pic which I've had forever -- and that roo is not even my bird, LOL! I have a fun close-up of my Lav Orp, Chumley I'll try to use.
