NY chicken lover!!!!

As promised, here's a picture of my little solo hatch:

700

I think she's going to be beautiful. Her adopted siblings are harder to get a picture of. I'll have to try again later. They are much bigger than her, but she gets along with them just fine.

I lost a cockerel today. It wasn't even cold. I'm beginning to think that the birds I'm losing have been bullied away from the food and were actually starving. I had seen him get bullied away before, but he was still getting some to eat, so I don't know. It's very weird because it wasn't even that cold out today. Of course he was also getting to age where any genetic defects would usually crop up, so it could have been that too.

Awwww What a cute little chick! What breed is it?

I have a question regarding CL - someone here once mentioned ( I believe it was Stony) that if you get a response to your ad and the email it's coming from is anonymous and says something like "craigslist reply...." that it could be spam?? Is that the email or was it something else? Or does CL now have a way to make the email responses anonymous?

She's half CCL half leghorn. She'll lay lots of beautiful blue eggs.

They make them anonymous now. The whole time I was communicating with the lady about the chicks I got I never saw her email. Probably the woman just flaked on you. If you get another reply and try to sell them again I would set up a meeting place elsewhere than your house. I just don't trust strangers with my address and I always get nervous when there's a no show because now those people have my address and what if they show up in the night and steal my birds? Probably not likely but you never know. After a no show like yours I got really paranoid and never meet anyone at my house anymore just in case. Plus, I don't want anyone walking on my property that also owns chickens that I know nothing about because what if their birds have diseases and they infect my flock. I know, I know, I'm paranoid, but like I said you never know.

Pharm and Rancher, I'll have to show Dh your posts. He didn't believe me when I told him how much my grandmother spent on yarn at the yarn shop.
I do kind of want to learn to crochet, I wanted to make a blanket for my new niece or nephew but everytime I pull up a tutorial on youtube I throw everything up in the air after rewinding it 20+ times. lol

Glass I think I got that corn seed on sale last autumn. My soil isn't great for corn but I'm going to try it this summer in a nice big pile of deep litter!

We have done and I hope to do more Granny Square swaps. We are open to newbies so don't be afraid to join. I should have done a winter swap but didn't. Perhaps will will do a spring swap.

I have three boxes of squares from the last three I participated in. I just haven't put them together.

It makes me smile in a really good way to hear that you do it. My Step dad crocheted all the time. He was really good at it. So good that he did it professionally. He used to teach at a yarn store. One of my prized possessions was a doll that he made. It won best of show at the fair the last year that he could enter in the amateur class.

I have to get a nice glass case to put it in. It is getting dirty. I get sad. He's been gone now for 12 years on Monday.

And yes it does get costly especially if you get into using some of the more expensive yarns. I love them. I haven't done as much as I used to. I have CT and it bothers my wrist. That and I'm running out of people to give stuff too. I just made 20 hats to donate with leftover yarn that I had. My favorite thing is to make baby blankets...They are so snuggly

I never do anything that fancy. I just do it to keep busy. One member's husband was told by his doctor to take it us, since he was in the begining of Alzheimers. It requires some concentration, which is good for the brain. I can see he was very good. I get my talent I think from my grandmother. The only one I know who crocheted.

Oh I'm totally with you, and I usually never have strangers here, actually I never have LOL but when I replied to this woman I actually said to her right off the bat, that I would be willing me to meet her one day this week but then she replied with "Well I'm right in town so I don't mind coming to you." I have to learn to be more stearn with people. I should have just said, No thats alright we can meet at McDonalds up the road on such and such day. And I know exactly what you mean about people showing up at night because when we were living in CT before moving to NY I had a m/f pair of Zebra Finches I was trying to rehome before our move. (They're not a very hardy bird and I didn't think they'd make the 2hr trip in the car with the stress and all) Well this kid wanted them for his grandmother, never showed up at 5 like he was supposed to. I went back to my mom's to pick up my son, came home around 9pm and THAT's when this kid showed up. Not only was he late but he also had this other guy with him that looked like this HUGE bouncer type guy that you would see standing outside a bar or club or something and I was ALONE! No way was I letting these people in my house at 9pm at night. Live and learn I guess. I suppose since this woman said she was right in town I didn't think much of it.

I wish I knew how to knit and crochet. I've ordered so many things off Etsy, hats, scarves, etc and everytime I do I say to myself, "Man these people are making a killing!" The last two hats I bought for my daughter and myself that were matching cost me close to a hundred bucks. If I could get into something like that as a hobby, something that would allow me to still stay home with my kids. I'd do it. But I don't know how to to crochet. Funny I came here and all this talk of crocheting must be the cause of these new ads popping up my screen "Free knitting classes"

Anywho...No show today for my two hens.

I don't know what happened but I haven't heard back yet from the woman who wanted them. Said she'd come by around noon but never showed.

Yes it does. Not something I like about BYC. Unfortunately if I block cookies it messes with my on line banking.

I know it may seem like a lot to pay, but yarn prices have gone up and if we kept track of the time it takes up to do the work we're making about $1 hr. Learning the stitches is easy, but reading some of the instructions can be a pain. I've pulled out more stitches than I care to think about.

I was knitting hats for the troops but the shop was to far to drive and the yarn was $7 + per skein. It had to be 100% wool.

Ok. I'm busy. I know, should NEVER ever click on an ad on the side. Distracts me from the thread. HOWEVER if you want a wonderful selection of heritage seeds, including medicinal herbs, click this link: http://www.anniesheirloomseeds.com/ 400 varieties. I'll be busy for a while.

Now I have to go back and keep reading and picking seeds to buy and try. (Where did I put my herb book? )

Oh trust me I know! My mom knits and crochets. She's made quilts for all of us kids and my kids. And she makes them with all those new types of yarns, fun fur, etc. I save her all my 50% off coupons for Jo-Anns because she stocks up when she has to go there for any supplies for her business. I say I want to learn but I know I'll never have the patience.
