NY chicken lover!!!!

Some breeds do better in the heat than others and some do better in the cold.

Buckeyes were developed for the cold,

Mediterranean breeds do better in the heat I believe. Of course there are exceptions I suppose.

Have a friend in Israel who's Brahmas died in the heat.

Some of my hoops have feed inside, but water out.

The EE's and the Marans are doing the best at laying right now. The two best days? These past two when it was below zero. I just don't get it.

No heat but do have some frost bite.

Yeah the exception is stony's crazy sumatra that want to sleep in the tree in winter lol. I'm sorry but those things are just nuts. I know other birds do it and such but i wouldn't be out there if i could be in a coop to block some wind.

Well I just got out from under the house 4 cans of great stuff down the drain. I think i could use another 8 and still find holes in my foundation i just got the bigger ones fixed for now. Now to try and get this crap out of my beard i was shimmying along in my craw space and managed to get some on the face.

Xovan, mine don't smell either, if I scoop the poop off the PDZ covered poopboards and keep the ratio of poop to shavings in check! But those coops I visited did have quite the chicken smell. The wife had a cast on, and hubby was doing all the chicken chores. She asked him if he had cleaned the coop, and he had not. It was the best thing for me to see how it is when life is busy and you can't devote too much time to the chores that go beyond the basic.

Thanks for this info Overhill!

When we lived on the coast the market carried live fish. The butcher in seafood, would take out the fish, hit it in the head with a mallet and proceed to process it for you to take home to cook. He was awesome, this was so humane. He even provided recipes! Someone mentioned knocking the bird in the head with a pipe to "stun" the bird. Think that's a great idea too! I'm not used to animal IV establishment, but can imagine how difficult attempts at a wing IV in a small bird would be. Good lord, I respect the heck out of those neonatal caregivers. So can't imagine trying to get a venous route established on a wiggling small animal! Where do you obtain research paper information? Is there a free website, like NIH, but for animal research?

Yup. This sent my Nonsense-O-Meter into the red zone. Good luck to you, but I am disengaging.

LOL i know but i know it's your sumatras that do it and they are from tropical island but love the winter trees. And i guess the craziness rubs off of them since its spreading to your 2 mutt roos lol.

OH I do understand life! Enough said. And so you know, to be honest, If I were to take pics now I would be embarrassed. But you would need a hammer and chisel to get some of the poo out. It is all frozen.

nah... they are just a chicken that humans haven't ruined by breeding out ALL of their natural traits. I am 100% positive that is tomorrow I moved away and left my Sumatra's here the flock would THRIVE without me. The only chicken breed left other than the feral chickens in FLA that you can say that about. Smarter than the average chicken

Someone on FB is looking for Sumatras. They just posted in one of the groups I joined.

I can't take anymore of this cold weather. I lost an EE chick last night. I had their heat lamp on them when I moved them outside at 3wks? I can't even remember when I moved them. Anyway, they are fully feathered, I have them in with my silkies for extra warmth and this little one passed away last night. She was supposed to go to ke5hde too. :-( 3rd bird I've lost this winter now. Wth!
