Nope probably not...Do you normally sell chicks or hatching eggs from your sumatras or no?

Nevermind, this wasn't one of the NY pages I belong to, it's the Original Poultry Bid which is nationwide - she's from OH

Is there anyone else in here not getting a single egg? I'm at my wit's end with these birds. I never wanted to light my coop, but I think I'm going to. Seriously, thirty birds and not one egg for over a month. They've been wormed, they had lice but I dusted, they eat a good quality, non store brand food. Nothing. I can understand some of the younger birds from this summer that haven't even started yet, but not one of my older hens is laying either. It's not like they're hiding them either because they don't leave the run this time of year. Ugh.
Is their coop or run dark ?
That last cold snap I put up a blanket on the one side that was the back ..after that they stopped laying ..down to one a day or so
when it warmed up ...I took the blanket down & put plastic instead ..they are back to laying- 10 hens - 1- 3 years 5- 6 eggs a day
Do you have egg eaters ? Do they need more protein ?

but to answer anyway. Yes I sell a lot of hatching eggs. If enough people ask I fire up a bator and hatch chicks. Broody baby's stay with their mama's. Taking them away is just mean

Hooray!! One of my ladies finally laid an egg! It was small, frozen and cracked....but still an egg. I suspect it came from one of my young speckled Sussex/buff orpington crosses. Talk about a great cross! nice size, pretty and so friendly!

i havent gotten an egg since before Christmas....just finished the last of the fresh eggs in the fridge, we're now onto using the eggs that I froze.

Well, I decided to light the coop. Just put a light in there. I'm starting them at 12 hours and I'll see if I can get them laying with that. I wouldn't be so annoyed if they hadn't stopped laying in October, ugh. They're had a nice long almost four month break and it's time for them to get off their tails and start laying again. So we'll see if it helps!

Why not, where do you live? If it is Syracuse area, please come visit. Before you go forward with expensive projects for livestock, you really must see if you can handle the dirt factor. Researching more is pointless until you come to grips with the day in, day out facts. When I was thinking about chickens my friend arranged for a visit to her brother and SIL's home and chicken coops. It was an eye opener. They had had chickens for years, and the SIL had had flocks before in the Midwest. I was shocked to see that the yard for the chickens had no vegetation, a fence that foxes were still digging under, and the coop was filled with poop and smelled bad. He also told me that since they have an egg business the year before they had a couple dozen chicks in the basement for a couple of months until the weather was reasonable for them to go out to the coop. He said he never saw so much dust. I was confronted at that time with reality, and had to deal with it. I decided to give it a go, and with the help of those on the thread it has gone ok. I am not a crack housekeeper. I can camp, and use dirty restrooms by not touching things, and washing my hands a lot. I can walk barefoot and have mud and worse squish through my feet. Vacuuming is done when absolutely necessary, or company is coming.

Please go see some chickens before you invest any more money.

I'm not too far from Syracuse! You're about an hour away, could easily meet and get some tips from you. Found another awesome site, it's http://japr.fass.org Journal of Applied Poultry Research. Good reads on there. I'm not exactly the camping type of gal, I could manage staying overnight in a clean motel though. Nobody would ever have to vacuum for me, we went crazy on this cleaning spree when the little guy developed severe allergies. He went from being on at least 4 medications per day to now, none. It's not easy having someone allergic to everything, no bleach in the washer, no pineapples, and some other fruits, no exposure to cats, or dogs, or dust. Old cat lives in the basement or outside. Every time you turn around your child needs an inhaler, it's not easy. We tried walking through the barn with goats at the NYS Fair and he was wheezing before we got to the other end. So far, no issues with the 3 birds, so we may be onto something here. We'd definitely like more birds when we move to the country. He wouldn't have to have too much exposure to them because they would be housed in a separate building. We've been looking at coops too, but would be happy to have use of the buildings that are already there. Just don't know how to set it up so it all works. Thanks for all of the advice! Greatly appreciated!

Rats, euthenasia, sumatras, heat, no eggs, old school new school, chickens sleeping trees

Well IDK I have a simple open air coop one roo with frostbite but he splashes around in the water so his problem as I see it. My welsummer did try and sleep outside in below freezing weather. I don't use heat and only put a light in the coop because my girls just started laying in August and stopped in September, I will not use the light again only just because I should be able to collect enough eggs and put them away in the frig to hold me over next winter, which by then I will have some more chickens. I've seen rats my neighbors have problems with them but I seem in the yard so I've been slow to decide on how to deal with it. I keep food and water outside the coop. I don't leave food out over night so I hope that helps. I wish one of the feral cats would take care of the rats.

My babies are big

6-7weeks

Oh poop. Everything is frozen....especially the poop in the coop. I had to hit a couple of piles with a shovel to move them to close the door. Why, oh why, do they sit on the door sill and poop there? Either go in or go out....don't just sit on the fence, silly chickens.

My washer is frozen. Not the water lines, the PUMP. If it cracks I am gonna be really angry. (Can't say what I want to say, cuz they **** it out) This washer is not very old, I don't want to have to replace it.

My dishwasher is frozen. Now THAT I understand. The plumbing is on an outside wall. Only insulation in that wall is bricks. I swear, bricks inside all the outside walls of this place. We are slowly redoing walls and installing modern insulation, however, the kitchen was totally remodeled before we bought it and all the cabinets and plumbing are new. Taking them down to put in insulation is not gonna happen, because it would render the kitchen unusable. So, we have to take the siding off and put insulation in from the outside. Now, of course, it isn't vinyl siding, it is old cedar shake siding. Gonna take a long time to take it down and put it back up. (Can't get it any more....not like what is on this house)

And my feet are frozen. This place definately is not draft free.

Got to go fix something very warm to eat and put my feet up off the floor.

Oh Cass! That's a LOT of work! We researched building materials recently. The cedar shakes may be very difficult to take off & put back on! Did you decide on an insulation yet? Our current home is about 115 yrs old, did repair on that and the barn, trying to do historic barn restoration. It's never easy with redo's. Learning about the R and U values though through the architect and building plans. In our old home we have the pink panther type insulation, but in the new home it will likely be closed cell because it's a geothermal going in. Seems the fiberglass isn't too hard to put up, but we were under the impression that the closed cell foam gives a tighter thermal wrap. I really wish you the best with this project. We looked at architectural shingles for the barn restoration and it was extremely cost prohibitive. Hopefully your cedar shakes will come off and go back on easily! Do you have a clothes dryer? We keep the house at 55F and heat up the clothes before we put them on. Heat up the socks! Get your tosies nice n toasty!
