NY chicken lover!!!!

Someone on FB is looking for Sumatras. They just posted in one of the groups I joined.

I can't take anymore of this cold weather. I lost an EE chick last night. I had their heat lamp on them when I moved them outside at 3wks? I can't even remember when I moved them. Anyway, they are fully feathered, I have them in with my silkies for extra warmth and this little one passed away last night. She was supposed to go to ke5hde too. :-( 3rd bird I've lost this winter now. Wth!

Sorry Lynzi ...maybe it had something wrong with it ...

but to answer anyway. Yes I sell a lot of hatching eggs. If enough people ask I fire up a bator and hatch chicks. Broody baby's stay with their mama's. Taking them away is just mean;)

Are Sumatra eggs small like bantam eggs are? I remember someone mentioning they are small bird. Would one have the same troubles with their eggs being shipped as they would have with bantam eggs? When my Silkie eggs shipped all the air cells had detached and out of the 10-11 eggs I had let sit for a day, 9 reattached.

Overhill - thanks for that ! I have an old dog that may need some help ... and she HATES other people - I have been trying to figure how to get a traveling vet to give me the stuff to give to her so she is not totally freaked out when she is weak and / or also in pain .... but I certainly don't have the expertise to do that myself .... maybe I can chloroform her and then put her down .... I welcome any suggestions. Even the smell of a stranger on the place gets her fur up ..... I want her to go easy in her sleep .... but you know how wishes are.

why do birds - your second call for peer reviewed papers has me telling you - don't bother until you know a grand amount already. I helped write some in bio chem genre ... I learned anything of value by actually working in the lab over any paper - the papers all want to show off the best of the best ways - and they always ALWAYS neglect the daily issues that are and must be dealt with. Don't bother to search for animal peer reviewed articles at this point in your learning process. It will lead to the death or neglect of any animal on your farm. That is how strongly I feel about this method for info gathering when starting out in any field - Bio Hazard level II lab or farm barn.

why do birds - I never said this cold was good for the birds - or that it would make any bird healthier (it will make your flock healthier if you breed your own - that will be over generations). But a heated coop WILL increase frostbite, respiratory problems and perhaps other issues like parasites. To combat this - if you have a heated coop - you would have to adjust and modify DAILY to monitor dust and humidity levels.

JLaw - great point about loosing heat when animals are used to it - every few years we always loose power for a day to a week. And the point of going into the barn with other animals ... a BIG barn with grumpy farmer has no insulation - cracks in the board to the outside and maybe 14 cattled in 3 different and widely separated pens (meaning they are not crammed together - lots of air and floor space) and the temp in the barn from only their bodies and breathing is 40 degrees !!!! in this -20 weather. :) There are very cold drafts in their - but they are creating their own little micro-climate.

they are bigger than bantam eggs. The air cells that detached on your bantam eggs had nothing to do with the size of the egg. It was the travel and apparent rough ride they took. Distance plays a key role.
Sumatra eggs from a pullet are about bantam size. From an adult hen they are a nice medium egg

Ohh ok, I just thought I read somewhere that it is more common for that to happen in smaller eggs than any other eggs. But that makes more sense.

It's hard keeping an incubator at temp when your heating whole house on space heaters and cant get it above 65F. The joys of an old house that wasn't taken care of. sweater/hoodie and an energy efficient light bulb don't want it to get too hot lol.

nothing like good old fashioned ingenuity. For a second though I thought someone had fallen asleep on the incubator while watching the eggs hatch.

I'm going to PM you Metella -- I should be able to help with some options in your area.
