NY chicken lover!!!!

Good morning. I have one chicken who decided this winter she would skip all the hassle of finding your spot to roost for the night and would like a private room. I disagreed with her, and tossed her up on the roost when I closed up, but she persisted. She won, she sleeps in one of the nest boxes, and she does not poop in there, which was my real concern. Of course it is Stewie, my rebel girl, always doing thing differently.

This winter is really starting to aggravate me...have another issue with another EE chick now. Went out to the shed this morning to check on everyone, found me brown EE chick kinda just keeping to herself, resting on one leg with her head tucked down really low. Picked her up and found one of her feet looking like this...

More Frostbite???
I brought her inside and am keeping her in a "brooder" with food and water. I really hope I don't lose another one of these chicks. :-(

The first pic looks like frost bite at the front of pad. Is that just dirt on back part of pad or is that a scab like bumble foot? That second pic is what has me confused a blood pocket forming might be frost bite advanced alittle but could also be infection?. I'm leaning more towards frostbite but I'm no expert. Try cleaning it off and see how different it looks.

The only bumble foot I had was small scabs I just cut off and Neosporin/vet wrapped it. The frost bite looked like your pad but not the top of your chickens foot. Then again different stages of frostbite will look different and not all chickens react the same to the same stuff. Try cleaning and then post in the sickness part of forums.

Well heated dog bowls is a bust had to move water and food back inside the coop. This spring I'm going to build a shallow 3 sided box just enough to fit the food and water in. I was wondering why chickens wasn't out eating and drinking all day and turns out the FF and water was frozen on top. Had enough cold wind to out do the dog bowls. Once I broke the ice and mixed the FF it was game on. I had to kick one ee out of water because she was standing in it like a hot tub. Well now to go work on frozen pipes and busted pipes.

Lynzi - looks like an abscess to me? but then again it might be a stage of frostbite that I haven't seen. I wish that I could help!

On another note. A good friend of mine has 2 roosters that he was wondering if any one wanted. I told him I would ask. He has a buff Orp & blue copper maran cross and a Brown leghorn cross. He wasn't sure what the cross was with that one. If anyone is interested let me know, otherwise is to the freezer with them.

Hope everyone is staying warm. I don't think that I will get much accomplished today. My youngest is sick and all he wants to do is snuggle. (not that I'm complaining much) I just don't want to get sick. My hands are so dry from the constant hand washing.

Afternoon all. The wind is a killer today. Second time I have had to haul out water to the cheeps. Dug out a 60 watt bulb. Hoping maybe that will work to keep the water flowing. Everyone is trying to soak up some sun.

Jlaw==sorry to hear of all your troubles. I hope things start looking up for you.

Lynzi--I hope your chick gets better.

Just got back home from running some errands...She seems to be content resting in her little brooder with no one bothering her. I'm going to wait and see if any of that swelling goes down before bringing any water or any kind of wrapping to it. There are no open wounds...yet. So we'll see what happens. For now she doesn't seem too bad. Just glad I got her out of the cold and by herself to rest it.

My water bowls were froze over tooo..except my chickens pecked in the center & broke the ice so they could still drink .
I have a regular heating pad on low ..on a metal platform under my FF ..the feed is in a metal bowl so it transfers the heat .
I am also mixing in some dry feed in it ..so it is not so moist as normal .

STONY- - I have never heard you mention what you brand feed you feed your chickens ..SUMATRA...

I think TT is still brooding I didnt see her come out with the rest ..she is now setting on a dummy egg .
I think I will take her out ...It is too early for babies in my opinion ...I dont mind if she does it in the spring though ..Looking forward to it ,..actually .

Agway 16% egg layer mixed 50% with cracked corn. It is what everybody gets. In the spring when broody's start I switch from the egg layer to Blue Seal game bird mixed with cracked corn. They eat a little of it in the morning, maybe for 10 minutes then forage the rest of the day. Cleaning up anything left before bed.
